i think the music shows a very mature side of prince as a songwriter and producer. on these levels, i really like this album. there are a lot of things going on here, and it's all very smooth and pleasant.

as for bria? her presence is all but irrelevant here. someone had to sing the songs, it had to be a woman, and clearly bria was the purple paisley bond girl du jour. her voice isn't awful. it's not great, either. for me appreciating prince's work on this album, her voice didn't get in the way at all.

think of this album like watching a david lynch or woody allen movie. it doesn't really matter who is the star of the movie, because when lynch or allen direct a movie, you pretty much know what you're in for, and if you like that kind of thing, you're watching the movie for the director, not so much for the actors. that's what's going on here. this album has bria's name on it, but it is 100% a prince vehicle. and it's a good one. i'd even venture to say he's sneaking a bit of creative evolution into this album, just to test the waters and see how we respond.

Good points. I don't really like her voice so far I'll keep your post in mind when I get the cd.

What do you think though...is there a major female artist that Prince could work with on a project like this? I don't have anyone in particular in mind but someone with strong vocals skills.

I have been very pleasantly surprisedwith this album. Love ANYTHING with Clare's strings, but I am really diggin this album regardless. Can't compare to Tamar since I never heard that one. But I think Bria's voice is very smooth and easy to listen to.

You'll be glad you did. I like the style of this album and I'd LOVE to hear him do an album like this without it having to be a protege album.

Really?

I listened to about 20-30 seconds of each song on the Bria album and it sounds like smooth jazz adult contemporary R&B to me - pretty much the epitome of music I hate. Nothing against the people who like that, different strokes and all. Just not my thing.

Am I wrong, though? Is there something else there?

well, i'm comparing it to the smoother, more mellow/jazzy stuff prince has done in the past...for example, a lot of the album reminds me a lot of "pink cashmere". that might be too mellow for you, and that's cool. i enjoy stuff like astrud gilberto and sade, so some of the stuff on bria's album hits a happy chord with me. i like that the album is so consistent in this style, since a typical prince album is so all over the place. i just wish prince would do an album for/by himself like this.

Ok... jumped straight to the track "Elixer" as I knew it was a duet with Prince.

First chorus... "Elixer, elixer, elixer"... hmmm, that sounded a bit rude??? No stop being a perv James, Prince is past that kind of stuff now...

Second chorus "Elixer, elixer, elixer".

Stop it.

Third chorus "Elixer, elixer, elixer. YES HE DOES".

YES HE DOES!!!

Prince the perv is back!!!

As for the 4th chorus, I laughed. smile

Great stuff.

Nice album title. lol

I've been putting off listening to it but you know what? I am really liking some of it. Particularly Immersion. She has a very laid back kind of voice. Reminds me of Janet on some tracks and Chante Moore on others. I disagree with some who say it's like most of the stuff out today. It really isn't. I hate today's stuff and I don't hate this.

It's real late/early here and I gotta get up in a few hours to hit the road to see my sister BUT I just got done listening to all 3 CDs finishing with Elixer.
2nite, Here eye Come, Another Boy and Elixer are my faves so far/right now but I'm really liking what I hear from start to finish with a few minor exceptions

Not planning on giving my twocents on the 2 Prince albums in the threads but I thought I'd give a lil for this one because I almost slept on it.

peace

I can't understand a bit why there is such a hype
about this album.I listend to it and really tried
to listen to each and every song till the end but
can't resist to fast-forward a couple of songs.

What I think is, with these instrumentals a lot of
other females with breathy voices could have done
a great job on it.

A bit shocked I was about some silly and really
bad lyrics.Everytime - some banal lyrics! I laughed
when I heard something like
"so fine, devine, everytime".
If the voice is fantastic than banal lyrics can be
okay.If the voice is average the lyrics or melodies
should be fantastic.

But Kept woman I like more with Bria's voice. lol.
lol

I think we all heard some songs with Bria's voice
on it that she did a couple of years ago. (Not with
Prince)And you really can hear now that Prince
teached her a lot! confused

it's post emancipation prince r'n'b. i would have minded if these

by bria i dig them and appreciate them.

her voice is nice enough, i don't understand all the hate toward
this woman. it's not like she's ever done anything to any of you.

lol

oh and by the way, the title track is a very good track nod
it's my fav of the album.

I feel the same way. It's not bad at all. Not super exciting, but pretty decent Adult Contemporary R&B Pop.

I don't get the hate either for her or the album. It's not a Prince album, it's a Prince protege album. I can't recall any of them that were fantastic.

ELIXER...anyone else think it's a pun of he lick's her?..."listen to the lyrics"...Prince is kinda showing his old raunchy side a little in this album...and it's far more believable, lyrically Prince has dumbed down his act so much lately he makes Rod Jane and Freddy look positively perverse razz
Hahahahahahahhaha. That is what my brother said last night when I was playing it for him to hear. I personally loved the disc and applaud Mr. Hayes' production work on the disc. It is rare that Prince allows anyone else to be involved in this type of work and so I will say that. There really isn't a song on this disc that I don't like so that is my thoughts on this music although I understand the criticism on the Sade statement which I don't think he meant any comparison to Sade just styles of music rather than of who was singing it. Sade has no one who should be compared to her as nor should Anita Baker. Now that is someone who Prince should work with in the studio.

um she is CRAZY HOT. her vid finally loaded on lf.com and damn! he def. has a knack for finding a hot piece of ass. but it speaks to his shallow character that he gives his "children" to all these hot girls with very minimal talent. if he was going to bundle an album with this pack, it should have been shelby's. but nooooo...in prince's world the hot girl gets priority. not hating, just find it amusing. i just hope it doesn't make him feel empty in the end.

So I finally got to listen to Bria's album during my train trip back home. Here's a review.

Here Eye Come

A great opening track. I get this Janet Jackson baby-making vibe. The Bass is superb.

All This Love

I simply adore this track. Reminds me of Madhouse. The instrumentalization is perfect. Simply perfect. And the Bass. Jazzy. My favorite track of the album. Thank You, Prince!!!

Home

Ok...so it's dated but very sexy. Ashanti would have had an hit single 8 years ago with a song like this. Like it alot.

Something U Already Know

I really like Bria's vocals in this. She may not be a Barbra in terms of vocal range, but she has nice voice. Her best vocal delivery. Once again, the instrumentalization is FLAWLESS!!!

Everytime

A bossa-nova esque tune. And some Clare Fisher in da house. It's such a dreamy track. Bria is so warm in her vocals. It's like the spawn of Te Amo Corazón but without the Salma.

2Nite

The most Mayté song in the album. I love it!!!! ADORE IT!!!! FUCK ME BRIA!!!! The piano loop...it's addictive!

Another Boy

The obligatory linn-drumm ballad. I enjoy it. But it feels so synthetic among the rest of the track. Still a nice album track.

Kept Woman

OMG! Sorry Tamar, but Bria owns this baby! Bria's gives the true meaning to the song. Loved the fact that Prince redid the instrumentalization. So sweet.Another favorite song. I get this Symbol album vibe in it.

Immersion

The odd duck of the album. Very strange and new age. It's not a great track. Maybe the weakest of the set.

Elixir

The strings...What a stunning track! Prince and Bria. Pure sexiness.

Overall:I never expected to like! Now I get why Prince is "doing" Bria. She has this sexiness in her voice. Also this is the best production prince has done in years.

A must own album...

Here I Come - The instrumentation and bass especially is inviting. This reminds me of something from the early to mid-90s, an enjoyable, if perfunctory intro that should fade out at 2 minutes.

All This Love - Down-tempo acid jazz. Like mid-90s 'Brand New Heavies'. Nice flute and bass and piano. "Sexy talk" rap in the middle is completely unnecessary, but is very brief thankfully.

Home - Disappointing because I liked the mood in which the album seemed to be heading. This slow 'dance' number is devoid of a hook and the jagged synthline that repeats throughout and even replaces the chorus is silly and annoying. The track doesn't develop at all either. Shame.

Something U Already Know - Another slow acid jazz type number. OK, but it would've completely passed me by had I not thought to concentrate on it though, it's the very epitomy of "album track", I did kind of get into it by the end though, I'll come back to it for another listen for sure.

Everytime - Nice, little samba type mood. Cheesy and sentimental in a way only Prince can be. Warm sun, afternoon breeze..... zzzzz, *snort* Oh, yes, I drifted off then.

2Nite - Sounds out of date, and quite like something from Carmen Electra's album, but better than any 'dance' numbers on MPLSound. And what does that bouncy piano line remind me of, Ladies Night? Needs a better vocalist to lift it and I can do without the predictible glitzy Prince synths towards the end.

Another Boy - Sounds pretty modern, but doesn't really do much for me. Next.

Kept Woman - OK, the down-tempo acid jazz thing is back but this track flew past me, nothing really jumped out at me, neither here nor there.

Immersion - Honestly I forgot this was playing till it faded out. This was recorded for Prince's upcoming chain of NPG crystal healing and floatation tank centers.

Elixir - Another slow mid-90s type number. Prince duets, not sure if his whiney falsetto adds anything, could've done more with a deep baritone to offset Bria's own brittle whisp. I love the strings on this one, but the vocals grate on me.

Overall: - They were thinking Sade? I hear Incognito in their less energetic down-tempo moments. Despite Bria herself having a completely unremarkable voice, the supposed duffer of the triple album set is actually a nice little slow Acid Jazz trip, which only falters when it strays from the mid-90s into the mid-00s for inspiration. Most tracks are needlessly over-long though with far too few musical ideas to go around, and it's hard to form any sort of attachment to Bria as a performer as she brings nothing distinctive to the record and you can't help but feel she'll be nothing more than a footnote by the time Prince has tired of his current projects.

smile

great and honest review,,, especially in regards to Home - it never goes anywhere.. and i really wanted to like that song..

I gotta say that I'm really digging this. Upon hearing Another Boy, I thought this LP was going to be some ol'cheesy bullshit. But as an entire body of work I can't hate on this.
