Does Prince write everything? Does Bria just perform the material or is she credited with the writing also?

in the last interview, i can't remember which one, it came out this year,
the one with the girl who got to listen to the three albums in the car and
in his house, prince said that bria wrote together with him, both lyrics
and music as far as i could make out from what he said.

you should dig up the interview, i'm sure it's still up somewhere on the
org. what i took away from it was that bria is probably more involved or
has at least more control over the music than say, tamar had.

i like all 3 tracks i've heard now. a lot. i'll get this album nod
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Like I said before....She reminds me of TAJA SEVELLE. I really think this is the first PROTEGEE in a LONG TIME that REALLY has a GREAT VOICE and a GREAT LOOK and Everyone can be JEALOUS,but I really like her STYLE and I will buy her stuff. I say give her a CHANCE; I can see her most DEFINITELY on KISS FM or some lOVE STATION....BRIA....YOU GOT BANK.... Listen to ME.... She CAN MAKE IT!!! And I'm PICKY as a FINICKY RUSSIAN BLUE.....Definitely can do it if Pushed Right.

Maybe I'll listen to it again and see if I change my mind, but I hated this song immediately. Just a rewarmed Mayte leftover, it sounds like. And not even a halfway good one at that.

I find it ironic that after an artist has finished working with Prince, they are suddenly considered irrelevant in the biz.
There's more life after a Prince-collabo. Might not be in the high and almighty worshipped limelight,
but they can stand on their own by having moved on with their life and work within the industry.

I feel that there are only a handful and thats a midget sized handful that have really found success (more mainstream) outside of Prince. Dont you think?

YES list
W&L
Sheila E
Carmen (in the most Z list way)
Mani (C list)
Mavis Staples
Rosie Gaines (she actually on the no list, but I love her)

the Remains to be seen list
Mayte (she is ZZ list but she still got some time)
Tamar
The Twins
Lisa Panama Hernandes
Jennifer Gordon (video babe, actress someone posted a pic somewhere here)

the No list as in its been years and we aint seen you or when we do you aint doing shit
Taja (urban farming gets her points)
Ingrid Chaves (who?)
Cat (poor thing)
Martika (what happened to her she got touched by the purple angel then poof)
Vanity (unless you count her God schtick then she on the list all on her own, oh well maybe with this chick) >>>>>
Diamond (or is it Pearl?) whos an evangelist now Holy Moses they all find Jesus after Prince or a bigger Penis! LOL
Millenium (the one chick is a minister too)
Appolonia

I'm sure I'm missing more but you see where Im going with this. falloff

Who of these chicks other than Sheila and W&L had a promising career before Prince?

An educated guess would be that Bria provides vocals over P's already finished tracks.

Someone who worked in the studio a few years ago said that Prince writes, produces everything but gives 50/50 credit to the protegees.

So they act like they wrote it, but he's behind it all like the Wizard of Oz.

falloff

sorry the thought of the little guy behind the curtain or in this case Skirts makes me laugh.

cool

Though i might add that Apollonia continued acting occasionally :

www.imdb.com/name/nm0467664

Mavis Staples :

Released solo-recordings long before the P-connection. And she also released music along with her brothers and sisters before the Paisley days.

www.mavisstaples.com

www.myspace.com/mavisstaplesmusic

Rosie Gaines :

Her first record-deal with Epic CBS Records was around 1985, also a few years before she hooked up with P.
From that debut-album she released the single "Skool-O-Logy". I saw her also appear as sessionsinger on albums before she finally made her trip to Paisley Park.
She kept on releasing her own work, so she is imo not on the no-list. Being not that visible in the limelight doesn't mean that they're totally out of the picture.
And luckily with all the web-technology today, we can stay informed on some of those artists' activities :

www.rosiegaines.com

www.myspace.com/rosiegaines

A few more ladies i can think of :

Sue Ann Carwell :

Had a record-deal with Warner Brothers before her Prince-collabo, and released another album after she worked with him.
I remember Jesse Johnson produced some work for that second album. She is still active as a singer, with a myspace which represents some cool cuts.

www.myspace.com/sueanncarwellmusic

Jill Jones :

Still active as an artist and representing herself online.

www.myspace.com/jilljonesmusic

Dale Bozzio :

www.myspace.com/thedalebozzio

Updates :

Martika :

"Martika returned to television by joining the cast of Wiseguy and a movie named "Footstep". In 1999, she recorded "The Happy Song." and she worked for a venezuelan group "Los amigos invisibles" in a song called "Si estuvieras aqui". A lot of her hits are included in several 80´s compilations. she's formed a duo now (July 2003) with this amazing musician called Michael Mozart and it's called Oppera. Go to www.Oppera.net it's a cross between the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Thin Lizzy. The Cd entitled "Violince" will be realeased in early summer 2003, It is a mixture of classical influences such as the likes of Mozart, Vivaldi, and Paganini, and classical rock romp matching the best of Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin, with the pomposity of Queen and The Beatles thrown in for good measure. Some of the songs tittles on the Cd are "That's just the way it is", "Upside Down", "Liar", "Misery", "Train comes 'round" and "Say Anything" wich is the first single. They have also been doing the pre-production for the "Say Anything" Video which is scheduled to begin shooting on July 14 th. In the midst of all that, they are already working on the live show, which will take them around the world over the course of the next two years. They plan to be in full- fledged rehearsal by the end of July. There are magazines and TV spots in the making."

Ingrid Chavez :

"In 1996, Tommy Roberts, a former Minneapolis recording engineer who recorded the Skyfish demo, contacted Ingrid and asked her to be in a band with him. She joined the band 'Ova' and recorded a four song EP and an E.P.K.
Ingrid became pregnant and decided to let go of the project and focus on her family. Ingrid currently lives in New England with her children focusing on photography, writing and a new recording project."

http://ingridchavez.com/bio.html

Taja Sevelle :

" She has written with many songwriters including Burt Bacharach, Thom Bell, Nile Rodgers, Prince, D-Moet (Foxy Brown and NAS), Meech (Snoop), Nellie Hooper and many more.
In 1998, Taja was signed to Sony 550, and released "TOYS OF VANITY", it received rave reviews from Billboard, People, Time Out, Interview, Paper, The Washington Post, and many others."

^^^In regards to that, only Mavis and Rosie have had really "successful" careers. There was another thread that said how do we measure the sucess of these protegees.

I would have to say is, how relevant they are in the mainstream with or without Prince.

Mavis still sells shows and is considered a gospel icon.

None of these other wheffas are *really* around.

Too bad. I liked Martika. biggrin
