*Famed percussionist Sheila E. will serve as one of the judges on Fox’s new reality music competition series "The Next Great American Band," a sister show to “American Idol” that gives unsigned and undiscovered groups a chance to compete for a record deal.


Sheila E joins fellow judges John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls and “Australian Idol” judge Ian Dickson. "New Zealand Idol" star Dominic Bowden will host the series, which is scheduled to premiere Oct. 19 and will air Fridays at 8 p.m. on Fox.


Following nationwide auditions, the three judges will whittle down the hopefuls to 10 semifinalist bands, who will perform each week before a live studio audience. The judges will have the chance to offer their critiques after each performance, but, as with “Idol,” viewer voting will ultimately determine which acts are kicked off each week.

Judges are looking for the bands to display a range of ability, as some weeks they will perform covers of songs by established artists and other weeks will be challenged to create original tunes. The winning group scores a record contract with 19 Recordings.

"The Next Great American Band" is produced by 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America, the same team behind "American Idol." Simon Fuller, Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz will executive produce.


In addition to her time with Prince, Sheila E.’s resume includes performances with Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross before launching her solo career with such hits as "The Glamorous Life" and "Love Bizarre."

i tried to post about this yesterday - but my computer failed to follow thru ....

they were talking about it on a local radio show and for some reason .... i think the one dude likes sheila e alot cus he was raving about her .. i was thinking "does the avg american listener to this lame show even KNOW who sheila e is ??? " ... anyways ... apparently they are in negotiations with several big bands ... so who knows ? like american idol ... i can see alot of big names goin on this show too ...

i would watch this more than either stupid idol or making the band which needs 2 b renamed group since they don't play instruments

That should be interesting.

I hope they show this series in the UK. I and many others would love to see it. It sounds like fun and better than American Idol / X Factor. I wish Sheila would visit Britain.
