P first met Jill when Jill was singing backup in Teena Marie's band. Teena was opening up for P during his first leg of the Dirty Mind tour. They started seeing each other on and off from then. Going by Susan Rogers in the book D.M.S.R, Jill was madly in love with P. But yeah, I had heard that P had got violent with Jill. Not cool at all if it's true.

I'd always heard this was about Susannah, but Google's not helping me here.

I have heard rumors of some "friction" after Jill decided to leave the Prince camp in the early 90s.Prince was preparing a second album for her but she wasn't satisfied with the songs and tried to get him to cancel her contract. He refused, and she was unable to record on another label for seven years. To make ends meet, she became a backup singer for Chic in 1995.

On the NPG website, in the chat room area, there was a topic of the day that said, "Is She's Always In My Hair REALLY about Jill Jones?" At the time that led me to believe Prince had heard of the rumor and was trying to lead everyone to believe it was not. But it is very possible the song was indeed about her, and Prince was just pulling some stunt to try to lead people in another direction. Who knows.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

She said she left because she did not like her small part in GB. I don't know about the contract. Seems that if she was really pissed she have gone to the media with the story but I don't think P would have been holding her back. I think it would have been WB.

She can't sing anyway so I don't know if she would have had this great carreer.

Well, the part of Jill singing backup for Teena and Teen opening for P is well documented. The part of P putting his hands is Jill, I've heard that from a few different sources since 94.

Here's what happened. Her first album was released in spring 1987 but it flopped commercially and Jill decided that she wanted to go in another direction for her next album. She didn't wanna be known as just another talentless "Prince girl" so she tried to write and produce her own songs. In 1988,she went to London (without Prince) and recorded a bunch of songs that she had hoped to release on her next album:

"Deep Kiss"
"Living Legend"
"Long Time"
"Unattainable Love"
"White Dogs"
"Some Of Us"
"Red"
"Tango"
"Sweet Liberty"
"Revolutionary"
"Ecstasy"

These songs were all written by Jill and have a much more personal edge to them. But unfortunately,Prince wasn't impressed. In 1989,he wrote and produced a bunch of songs that he intended for Jill's second album.A few of these songs have been circulating for years:

"My Baby Knows How To Love Me"
"Flesh and Blood"
"Boom Boom (Can't U Feel The Beat Of My Heart)"

A first single was planned,"Boom Boom" and a video was filmed. But Jill didn't like these new songs or the direction that Prince wanted her to go in.There were alot of heated arguments and ultimately, the album was never released.Jill wanted to leave Paisley Park Records and start over at a new label, but Prince wouldn't release her from her contract (a similar situation happened with Margie Cox).By the mid 90s,with her career stalled and no real money coming in,Jill became a backup singer with the 70s disco group Chic.

Jill can sing, but I don't think her vocals on the first album are the best that she can do.There's a little too much screaming and yelping going on.With stronger material and a different approach, she could have been a superstar.

i totally agree. I always thought that she was the one that had any talent from the purple rain days. He may even have been intimidated by her. who knows...

Well, we've had this topic on here a long time ago. I've said on here countless times that Jill was the best female vocalist, along with Rosie, that P has ever worked with. Instead of fucking with Apples6, he should have, in between his 1999 and Purple Rain albums, in 83, he should have released a J.J. album. At the very latest, in 84. I say in 83, cuz Jill had a high profile image from being in his videos. If nothing else, an EP. A little teaser for later in 84. Jill would have tore up his funk/rock dark material from this period. The care that P put into Sheila's debut, it was clearly obvious that P wanted this album to bang. He definately should have put that time and care into J.J.'s album instead of the album filler and tossed off material he ended up giving Jill. She deserved better than that. But Sheila always acted like she would kiss the ground P walks on. Jill, like Lisa, didn't do that shit. P dug having Lisa in his band cuz of her musicianship and her looks. So, he went along with Lisa not kissing his ass. But with Jill, who probably was during a time, in love with P, that was her downfall. P would have used that as her weakness and ran game till the wheels fell off.

If you search the Net, you'll find a very candid interview with Jill from a total JJ fanatic, and she pretty much lays it out that she didn't like the direction of her new disc and wanted to do her own thing. She does seem slightly peeved that she had to lip synch Elisa Fiorillo's vocals on "Love Machine" in GB and I believe she mentions that she originally did the vocals for the song, but that Prince changed his mind and switched them with Elisa. I've heard a couple of tracks off her last disc "Two" which are hugely different than what she did with Prince, but her voice is still awesome. Anyone have "Two"? I've been trying to get it, but it's pretty obscure now.

"screaming and yelping" is being nice. I just never cared for her voice on that first album. Maybe she did better with her own material. I just can't figure out her complaining about her small part in GB. She should have been thanking the gods she was not the star of that movie.

lol,Jill has many reasons to be pissed at Prince. She was a faithful background singer for him in the early 80s,but for several years, she was put on the back burner. She had only a tiny part in 'Purple Rain' and despite the fact that she could actually sing, she had to sit back and watch Prince devote his time to lesser talents like Vanity and Apollonia. Then when her album was finally released,it consisted of several "leftover" songs that had been written years earlier. The album received very little promotion and didn't even chart at all.The final straw was 'Graffiti Bridge'.Once again,Jill was given a role thata she could have phoned in and worst of all,she didn't even get to sing in the film. Her one big "moment" in the film occurs when she gets to lip-synch Ellisa Fiorillo's vocal on "Love Machine" and that's only for one verse....Ingrid Chavez takes over the rest of the lip-syncing! Considering that she had been a faithful protege for so many years, she certainly deserved better treatment and alot more exposure than she received.

It's amazing that Jill was not given her own song to sing in the movie and on the soundtrack.

SNAP! You tell 'em boy!
MF's on here talking about how Jill can't sing... First of all she *can* sing like crazy- listen to her when she's natural- not at P's beck and call performing songs HIS way. Otherwise she SO WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN WORKING for Teena Marie or CHIC later down the road. Y'all better leave Miss Jill alone. Go pick on Carmen Electra or someone else more your own size!
