While on the subject, I think some sort of nod needs to go to another "grandfather" of the New Romantics, Mr. Jim Morrison:
The guy was obsessed with many of the Romantic writers, and was practically Dionysis incarnate. The members of Duran Duran (especially Simon), and Adam Ant have all cited The Doors as a huge influence. 
In fact, I think a case could be made for ALL the members of The Doors being early forerunners of the New Romantic movement.

Got together w/ my "research director" to touch base this afternoon... showed him all these Adam Ant & Duran Duran videos I've been working on - he hadn't seen them before (wha??  ) and thought they were great fun. He's really quite excited about this paper. Essentially my thesis is "Why the New Romantics do not suck."  I've come to realize that I'm just fed up with defending them from insult all the time. | |

They simply will not die (no matter how far they abuse their bodies with drugs, sailboats, etc); so here they are forced to age, wrinkle, and that's simply not glamorous or Romantic. Now a guy like Morrison's youthful angst is essentially preserved in dry ice. D2 and Prince, say, have to age, mate, buy real estate... | |

at the end of adam ant's video "prince charming," he does this little dance w/ the ballroom full of people... that quite resembles prince's little dance w/ his band at the end of "when doves cry." anybody else ever notice this? and can anyone shed some light on the subject... | |

I noticed that too, but I have no idea if it was Prince taking a page from Adam, or if it's just a coincidence. Judging from Prince's look, circa the 1999 album, he was certainly influenced by Adam Ant. To what extent is debatable, but I think there is definitely a dash of Adam's stuff in Prince (and, interestigly enough, Prince would later influence Adam).

My thesis will be a lot more boring well, this year's program is the renaissance, actually. but my writing is in the domain of civilization... and that can be almost anything. right now i'm explaining the artistic and historical relevance of the new romantics. i took the renaissance course instead of the 20th century option, because i thought i needed to know more about that period. and it is actually playing a role in my thesis, which is cool.
by the way, brought 3121 for my advisor to hear the other day... he was dancing! | |
