What associate artist had the most chart success?

I know that Sinead O'Connor and the Bangles had number one hits with songs written by Prince but I'm talking about people like Sheila E,the Time, Wendy and Lisa and so forth that actually were associated with Prince regularly for more than just one song or two.

hmmm .. i am curious too ....

i would guess the time ... cus they had more "hits" on the albums .... but it would admittedly be a guess .... sheila e is the one i think of as far as being "well known" ... but she didnt have many "hits" ... wink

It would obviously have to be the Time. All of their albums charted well even though there are only 4. Sheila really only made a dent with the first 2 albums and I dont she got as high as the Time did with the Ice Cream Castles or Pandemonium albums.

It depends on which chart. Both the Time and Sheila E have had three U.S. top 40 hits (one top ten each), but on the R&B charts, The Time have a lot more chart singles. All of the Time's albums have been certified gold or platinum. Not so for Sheila E. I can post complete chart discographies when I consult my Billboard books tonight.

And The Bangles' "Manic Monday" peaked at #2 in the states, not #1.

From Sextonseven's post, it seem slike Sheila achieved the highest position with TGL although the Time had more consistent chart showings..... all in terms of singles of course.

That was really interesting info. I'm kinda shocked about some of it..... meaning how high some of htese were. I don't remember hearing most of these songs on the radio,... well I guess the one's in the 30's and higher. LIke Belle of St Mark..... I always wished the'd play protoge stuff more.

Kind of beside the point, but it seems that The Time is seen as a subset of Prince because of Purple Rain. Sheila seems like a celebrity in her own right, even though she obviously owes much of it to Prince. TGL wasn't in Purple Rain & Prince wasn't in her video, so it seems more removed from Prince, ala Sinead & Bangles.

I got home too late last night to post chart discographies, but I will tonight--The Time, Sheila E and Jesse. Jesse has had more R&B hits than Sheila E, but no top 40 hits.

Uh...You must live on Jupiter then. Jesse charted with "I Want My Girl", "Can You Help Me" and "Be Your Man." Jesse was probably the most consistent of the Associates. I don't count Sinead as an associate. Taking someone's song doesn't make you an associate.

And to think, I always wanted to live in New York City. New York is supposed to be up on things up there....the baddest of the bad. They played the hell out of Jesse down here. Y'all need to hide your heads in shame up there for that one, cause y'all let a dead ass state like Mississippi be one up on you. lol

Well, maybe I should've also said that I was in college upstate so I only got to listen to the NY radio stations when I was home for breaks and in the summer.... and i would make tapes off the radio that I would bring back to college.....

But i don't remember hearing Jesse too much. LIke I said, maybe Be your Man and maybe Crazay once in a while.

But whenever I'd come home from school My friend and I woudl go tot he black neighborhood record store and pick up all the Prince and related artists albums and 12"'s smile

Snap

One more chart:

#1 US Dance Hits

Sheila E.
"The Glamorous Life" #1 for 2 weeks
"A Love Bizarre" #1 for 2 weeks

Vanity 6
"Nasty Girl" #1 for 4 weeks

The Time, Jesse Johnson, and Morris Day never achieved #1s on the dance charts. Sheena Easton did with Prince's "Sugar Walls" (1 week) and so did Chaka Khan with Prince's "I Feel 4 U" (3 weeks), but both Sheena and Chaka were well-established artists before Prince became musically involved with either one.

I stopped listening to NYC R&B radio in 1986 so I wouldn't know if those stations were big on the Minneapolis sound after that. I used to hear all the new Paisley Park stuff by seeing the videos on BET.

Back in the day, I used to go to record stores in black neighborhoods to get hard to find funk. The funny thing is that nowadays it's the exact opposite. I have to go to white neighborhoods to get funk because all I ever see in the black neighborhood record stores is rap. lol

I'm not sure to which charts you are referring. (U.K.?) Below are all the Billboard chart positions for Wendy and Lisa:

Hot 100
Waterfall - 56

R&B Singles
Are You My Baby - 23

Top 200 Albums
Wendy And Lisa - 88
Fruit At The Bottom - 119

R&B Albums
Fruit At The Bottom - 71

Additionally, "The Closing Of The Year" peaked at #53 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. These were all the chart entries I could find.
