The Time-The Magnificent 7

The Time to me will ALWAYS be: Morris Day, Monte Moir, Jimmy Jam, Jesse Johnson, Terry Lewis, Jellybean Johnson and Jerome. Anything other than this line up to me is "Part Time". I was lucky enough to see The Time open for Prince on the 1999 tour, and they just blew me away. And I think "What Time Is It?" is one of the best Prince productions ever. So what are some of your favorite Time albums and stories?

I wasnt as blessed as Everlasting to witness the O.G. Time back in the day.....but I did see PARTtime back in 96, and they werent bad....however, when I'm at home, I always play the 1999 tour video...the triple threat tour....The Time, Vanity 6, and Prince and the Revolution.....and I can SEE what Everlasting's talking about their onstage presence was NOT to be denied.....On the album side, nobody can touch what Prince and Morris put on wax. "Get it Up", "Cool", "The Bird", and of course the beyond-classic, quintessential "777-9311"...r&b perfection!

Prince's funkiest work was for The Time. I like Prince's Tricky persona, that dirty voice. Can I hear some chicken scratchin'?

Squawk! Halellujah! Whoh, oh, oh, oh.

While we're on the subject...
Does any1 know whatever happened 2 the supposed new album "Old Dogs, New Tricks"? It was mentioned that they had almost finished it in 1999, now it's 2002! Has it been shelved permanently?

What happened to Jesse Johnson?

After he was released, I know he did "Bare my naked soul." But what after that?

Brother's responsible for at least 1/4 my guitar licks.

Fave solo just might be his work on "Affection" by Ta Mara & the Seen.

Just saw the time at the ho chunk casino, here in wi. last month. had 1st row, center. they were great as always. the sound system wasnt though... they sang their oldies, oak tree, the bird, jungle love, shake, (from graffiti bridge) etc. my fav is jerome. he still has it... as do they all, with the mirror, and running around all over the stage and off. he's a trip.got his autograph later too. they had a young guitar player, that i asked later if he was related to prince. looked alot like him, only he's taller. (he wasnt). he also played the guitar like he was getting lessons from prince. same mannerisms too. i cant remember his name, but he was selling a cd called freak juice. he was pretty good. it was good to see the time. they played summerfest last year here in wisconsin, and also played across the street from where prince was performing in nov. 2000, in wi. i heard prince was late to his show by anhour, because he went across the steet to where the time were and jammed with them 1st. they play wisconsin quite alot. thank god.

i think the time concert i saw about three years ago here in montpellier was the coolest ever... and i've seen a few that were perty good (nirvana, etc)...

i was practically on the stage. brought a camera and got it all down. flirted w/ jerome a lot. almost got pulled on the stage for that bit of schtick they do w/ the girl; mucho fun.

my french companion did not know the time at all and found the show extremely amusing.

The Original LineUp of The Time was indeed the Funk but by Pandomonium u can hear the Transition of Musical Styles.

if Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were 2 do 1 Time Album u'd see it Blow Up Off The Map...

Still if u wanna hear some Vintage Funk check out Janet Jackson's New CD & i have 2 admit it's rather "Fly"...

Here's a Time experience I will not soon forget.
I was working in a Deli under an office complex that also was home to a local RnB radio station here in Atlanta. Well, since I had to open up early most mornings, I would tune into that station on the way to work. Well who would have thought that one day, none other than Morris and Jerome would be hosting the show as special guests. My jaw hit the floor. I was on edge the whole morning. I spotted one of the DJ's coming down for breakfast and I almost attacked him and told him that he needs to at least introduce me to them before they leave. Well, he couldnt give me a definite yes, but I also told him to let them know that after the show, breakfast would be on me. Well, breakfast came and left and I was to say the least disappointed that I didnt hear or see from them at all, not even shortly after. So I continued my day a little bummed out that I had missed my chance to see them.
Later that afternoon, I got a message from one of my employees that someone wanted to see me up front. By that time I had forgotten about my previous offer. I go to the counter and to my complete surprise, Morris and Jerome were standing there. They asked if I was the manager, at that moment I didnt know who I was, but I gained my composure and said, Uh, huh. Then Morris said, "sorry we're late but we couldnt pass up a free meal, U know we gots to eat". Needless to say the meal was on the house, I got to chat with them for a few minutes and they are very cool guys in person. They even stayed long enough to let me scramble for any camera I could find and get a few pop shots with them.
A few weeks later, they made a second appearance to the deli completely by surprise. And of course, I fed them again, but they remembered my name and everything. Very cool guys to talk to. No attitude or anything, just 2 down to earth guys.
Now if I could only get W&L to drop by. But of course, Im asking way too much, lol. Just thought Id share.

The Time is one of the greatest supergorups ever that never reached the zenith of what they were capable of. WHAT TIME IS IT????? is a true masterwork. I remember in late 1982 you couldn't get away from 777-9311 on R*B radio. A great album that will stand the test of time.... I THINK!!!!!

I am STILL dreaming of 1 more REAL Time "continuation"..

I saw the original Time on BOTH the Controversy & 1999 tours & those boys were BAAAAAD!!!!! Everybody loved Prince & came to see HIM on those tours, but after both shows in Richmond, everyone I talked to said they thought The Time was better- VERY TIGHT musically, more showmanship, funnier.. they always had the crowd begging for more back in the day.

Prince HAD to break them up (=firing Jimmy & Terry);
& he was TOTALLY right when he said that The Time was the only band he was ever afraid of.
Prince created a monster & then couldn't keep up!
Irony exemplified!

My most MEMORABLE Time memory was back in May (I think) of '97..
"Morris Day & The Time" played at this little club in DC which was called "The Spot" at the time, on E St. They arrived about 90 minutes late to a half-filled room.. by the time they got on stage the room was nearly full.
So of course, they still brought the funk as only they can.. then they started doing "The Bird"
This isn't my favorite song, but I LOVE it just for those COOL dance steps they do at the end of the song. As I was RIGHT AT THE FRONT OF THE STAGE, just before they started that dance routine..
I JUMPED UP ON THE STAGE,
basically between Freeze & Morris..
& I DID THAT WHOLE DANCE ROUTINE WITH THEM..
INCLUDING the "Chili Sauce" slide!!!!!

THAT WAS TOO FUCKING COOL!!!!!
I was SO excited, it was really a dream come true!
For those, what 20 seconds..
I
was a member of The Time!
biggrin

After the show, I was even approached by a few women.. I was dressed in a "Timely" fashion & they maybe thought I was a "band extra" or something..!

Then finally, when Morris & the boys came out of the dressing room, I caught Morris & Jerome, gave them mad props for being funky all these years, then they showed me some love..
then Jerome said to me- & I quote:
"Man, I was gonna kick yo ass of the stage, but you did that shit pretty good"

WELL ALRIGHT!

Then I talked to Monte for about 10 minutes. He was just hanging out with his girlfriend. He was cool, he talked about touring in general, some of their upcoming dates. Laid back, but nice.

NO QUESTION, an UNBELIEVABLE experience!
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I wonder what happend too! It's not so
easy to find info about them on the net.
Even Jam& Lewis site is shallow.
They're still making music! What's
wrong with the rest of the Guys?
As far as i know there's no beef in the
Group.Maybe it's because Jam 7 Lewis don't
want to tour. And Morris always Does.

We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced
when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

All of the Time albums will go down as great albums, classics. Including Pandemonium. Best opening act for Prince ever. the only one that was so good, they intimidated Prince. They had everthing comedy, dance moves and soo damn cool. But most important peeps, they had talent.

Jerome complimented me on my shirt onceay the House of Blues in LA in the early 90's.

THE TIME is my favorite band. Their music introduced me to Prince's world. I wish I could have seen and heard the Original lineup. However, the Morris Day and The Time lineup is not bad at all. Torri can really make that guitar talk. I hope to hear some new music, but the old stand bys are classic.

I saw them in Paris (in 95 if i remember well) and it was brilliant !
It was in a small jazz club and I had Morris just right there in front of me biggrin
What's really great about the Time (even if it's not the O.G.Time I know...) is that Morris , even if he's the leader now, still manages to keep a "band spirit", something that Prince has been a bit lacking lately I think...
And what a comedian ! biggrin
