Was Apollonia 6 meant to be a one album deal?

Was Apollonia 6 meant to go on and record multiple albums or was there never a "long-term" plan for the group to begin with?

Prince's deal with WB was that he could do side projects. Apollonia 6 was, just like many a project, a whimsical occurance.

The idea was stolen from Rick James, with whom Prince had a healthy competition. His Mary Jane Girls were the direct reason Prince wanted a project called The Whores. Bur Vanity did not like that name, so Vanity 6 was born. Apollonia 6 was only formed because Vanity left the Prince camp.

I do not think Prince had any intention to record any more Apollonia albums than the one released, as girl bands brought on a lot of trouble, especially if you date 2 out of 3 girls involved.

I also read that Prince wasn't impressed with Apollonias voice at all and didn't want to waste any of his good material on her.

I think Vanity 6's original name might have been The Hookers, not The Whores.

According to 'The Vault', Apollonia 6 were initially destined for more than one album until Patricia Kotero made it clear she didn't want to stay with Paisley Park beyond Purple Rain. That's when Prince pulled the really good songs from the album (like "Manic Monday") and eventually lost interest in the project.

apple 6 is a horrible album.....an 6 was good though! Vanity's voice is also a zillion times better then Apples.....I think Apple 6 might actually be his worst side project ever!

I do like Apollonia 6 though; Ooh She She Wa Wa is still the shiznick (whatever it means) because of that tempo change midsong and the amazing old skool Prince lyrics.

"I got a shape like a bottle of co-co-coca-cola
I got a built-in attitude like U've never seen
I dance with the beat of the clock
Come on baby, let's rock

CHORUS:
Ooo she she wa wa
I'm the one that U... oooh, I'm the one that U... oooh
I'm the one that I U want"

I agree with you I loved it to. I think if Prince let Apollonia 6 have the songs Manic Monday and The Glamorous Life it would have been a better album. Don't blame Apollonia 6 for not so good material, blame Prince for it at the last minute he put the song Take Me With U on his album instead of Apollonia 6's I think it could have been on both albums it has been done by other artists before. Prince just wanted to control the group badly. If you listen to Apollonia's solo album her voice sounds great because she has the right material for her voice.
Apollonia- Sex Shooter shooterin' love off in your direction

I think the Carmen Electra album was worse. The worst Paisley Park release however was T.C. Ellis.

That has to be BS.
if he disliked her voice why put her on Take me With you and NOT edit that horrible note she hit at the end of the song.

The man was getting some Nookie from her therefore he didn't care about her voice.

Prince is king for the one album side project.

Vanity 6
Apples 6
The Family
Jill Jones
Carmen Electra
The absolutely CUTE but talentless girl in Graffitti Bridge.

um,, there are more but I can't remember them.

Remember, that was Rick James who said P stole the idea from him. Vanity6 came out before The MJ Girls so who really know. Either way, Vanity6's song was WAY funkier than MJG's song

Well i'm not sure I would agree. All night long by the major jane girls was the bomb. So was My house.

The only song I liked from vanity 6 Was Nasty Girls.
Apple 6 album was better to me "Sex Shooter, Some kind of Lover,

it was a good album minues Apples singing.

As much as I like Prince I would Say the MJG were better.
Who came first ,, I have no idea. Rick james would claim that everybody stole from him.

I agree that the MJG's could sing better but i still think Nasty Girl and If a Girl Answers, Don't Hang Up is much more funky than In My House and All Night Long. V6 came out in 1982. MJG's came out in 1983. So who REALLY stole from who?

I have 2 agree. MJG's were knda weak - lukewarm. Nothing abou their songs made U fell like doing anything. Now, "Nasty Girl ' makes me want to instantly get up and "dance nasty" and I've stripped 4 my boyfriend to that song .

I think "All Night Long" is a classic. That fact that it's been sampled a zillion times is testament to that. I also really love the groove of "Candy Man". Jam & Lewis did a small tribute to the Mary Jane Girls by sampling not one, but two of their songs on the 12" single of "Let's Get Together" by their band Krush (from the Mo' Money soundtrack). Hearing them sing over the Mary Jane Girls' tracks was wild.

Having said all that, I do like the Vanity 6 album better than either of the Mary Jane Girls' LPs. It's mostly because of the heavy new wave vibe throughout. Apollonia 6 had more of the 80s funk-dance-rock fusion that Prince was working with in Purple Rain.
