Social features coming

Hey guys...

I've done a tiny bit of integration of them thar "social networking" sites into the org, as an experiment. Right now the feature is only enabled for moderators, just so we can test everything out, but if it looks good, everyone will be able to...

  • 'Share' threads via Twitter, Google Buzz, or Facebook
  • 'Like' threads on Facebook

and, I'm sure I can think up other things to do too, but let's see how it goes.

word up! FB link works now...
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

If you're referring to being allowed larger avatars (100 x 100), I would 2nd that request. Also, to be allowed [img] code's in our signatures would be nice also.

I noticed that! I thought there was something wrong with my browser at first, lol. But I agree with TheVoid, I'm not so much into letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing. Although who knows, there may be some topic at some point that I would want to share on the social networking sites that didn't necessarily include my input.

In any event, thanks Ben. It's nice to see The Org keeping up.

One thing I would suggest is that you reconsider the placement of them. The buttons are really close to the Page 1, 2, 3, etc. buttons.

People like me accidentally click on the wrong thing when they're that close together. Which is why I log out so often when I try to click on "My Org."

I am strongly opposed to this. And the timing couldn't be worse - considering recent privacy concerns with Facebook.

This may force me to reconsider my participation on this site. sad

I'm serious. I've already deleted my avatar. I hate this idea. Hate it.

Won't the folk who have run from here and sought refuge in Facebook feel like the Org is inescapable now? falloff

It doesn't make a difference to me since I post on both sites and don't edit content for FB but I do respect the fact that some folk want to keep things separate. So while it's a fun idea, might be worth reconsidering I guess.

Whatever your decision turns out, thanks for all the work you put into this site Ben. cool

I can see how, at first blush, this might seem like a cool or fun thing to do. But riddle me this: what is to stop someone from linking to an org post on Facebook, using an orger's real name or other identifying information? If that happens, it's on Facebook, it can be googled - and any number of problems can result. Just as a for instance, assuming time stamps travel with the threads, an employer would be able to see not only what - but when someone who works for them is posting.

There are a lot of people who are registered here, but don't post. Just because those of us who do converse think we're harmless doesn't mean there aren't folks out there whose intentions are less honorable.

What if someone starts a fun, totally clean thread and, as so often happens, subsequent posters take it into the gutter? Are people going to have threads that have turned NSFW (through no fault of their own) linked on Facebook? Again, what if someone links to it using the OP's real name? Is the org going to assume responsibility for any consequences arising from that?

The img code presents a problem though because how do yo prevent folks from chosing banners that take up the entire real estate of a person's screen?

I like the idea of being able to embed banners, but I'm not sure how you'd do it.

Can I have unlimited posting with the ability to read other people's orgntoes?

I see what you're saying. I believe there's an option on most bulletin boards that allows users to specify a signature image (of specific dimensions - like 480 x 50) as part of their profile setup. But you're so right, give people too much artistic freedom up in here and it will turn into MySpace, where people have so much going on with their page it takes forever to load.

But I really, really like your idea of the larger avatars. I think that could be implemented without rocking everyone's world too much (...except I'm sure Ben is thinking... BANDWIDTH!).
