An Ignore feature

An Ignore feature would allow some members the option of not seeing the responses and posts of other members they may find irritating. It may even deter some of the flaming and other baiting responses that may occur. Why hasn't The Org try to give members that option?

I don't think the site needs an ignore feature, when you can just easily scroll past the poster you don't like.

Now in the chat room I could see that being a good option, but on the boards no.

I think an ignore function would be a good idea. There are cases when some otherwise rule following orgers just plain do not like each other...it would make life for everyone a little easier.

i kinda agree but how do you manage something like that? if someone quotes an ignored person should the quote not show up too? and how do you code something like that? do other sites offer this?

I don't feel seeing the quote of an offending person is the issue as much as the offending person knowing (s)he is being irritating and confrontational and continuing to egg it on. Like Nikster said, there are some people who simply don't like each other and I would imagine everyone on The Org has at least one person who rubs him or her the wrong way.

Not really, particularly when the offending person knows (s)he is getting on your nerves and continues to make responses in order to get a rise out of you. An Ignore feature potentially can diffuse some hostile climate in threads.

Just ignore them. No special feature is needed. If someone is being offensive and trying to get a reaction from someone else and the someone else KNOWS this...Just ignore them.

Scrolling past posts is an effective ignore function. thumbs up!

I've been on other boards that do offer this feature...and what the ignored person says does show up when quoted. Overall tho, it does seem to help. I think it would be worth it to at least try it.

I'm not entirely opposed, but I wonder if it would get very messy. Especially in long threads, people could be saying the same things over and over or not understand what someone else is referring to when referring to someone's post they have on "ignore".

And as stated above, you can simply not read anyone's posts, should you choose.

Self control can be a wonderfully effective ignore function thumbs up!

I really see no point for one to be added because we all have the ability just many choose not to use theirs. Is it really that hard to not make yourself read and respond to someone/thing you would put on an ignore feature/list ?

lol I find it funny

It could also cause not as many posts as needed to be reported to moderators. We don't see every single post on the org and rely on others to report posts that break rules. If people are flaming and many people have them on "ignore" it's less likely to get reported and less likely mods will take action against someone who is a repeat offender.

What the mods said. And also, it's not trivial to implement technically and still do the level of caching I'd like to do. So sorry, an ignore-these-people feature for the forums isn't likely on the near horizon...

exactly

I've witnessed it in use, and the people who wished for the funtion so badly couldn't seem to control themselves from deactivating it to see what these people were saying that irritated them so badly.
Or they used it as tool to be a bully. rolleyes
