I think you'll find that I said:

I support any artist/creator/originator of "content" in allowing them to defend their legal rights to protect their work [...] I also understand that whilst "freedom of speech" is something to be championed, there is (arguably) material on "fansites" that could very well be deemed libellous and that too should be legally challenged, if deemed necessary.

However, the same protection goes for "our" legal rights, too. Surely it is unlawful and immoral to persecute those that publish images and information that adheres to the Fair Use doctrine?

In short, I agree with ANYONE defending their legal rights WITHIN the law. By all means he should be able exercise his rights regarding copyright/libel etc, my only concern is that the Fair Use doctrine seems to be being overlooked.

Why do you consider my view to be so objectionable/questionable?
[Edited 11/6/07 9:07am]

So are you supporting Prince that it's illegal to tattoo the "symbol" or hhis face on ur body?? How bout creating a painting in his likeness? Or mixing Prince music for your iPod? Or reciting a poem with his name in it? What is illegal in the art of self expression?

That's a pretty hefty concern. And that could be why your comments are seen as questionable by many on this thread. Though I do applaud your respectful tone in presenting your point of view.

By now, you've certainly seen the recent developments plastered on the main page of the Org and other Prince fan sites. Whether you agree, disagree, or just don't know what to think about what's going on, here's your place to express thoughts, arguments, questions, and whatever else you may think is relevant to the situation.

Just one thing: KEEP IT CIVIL. no no no!

Ok, heeeere we go....

Clearly mental - Prince.org is one of the best behaved sites out there.

Its very hard to keep it civil when the @@@@@ wants to stop people actually talking.

Well Ive got news for you - the word PRINCE isnt yours to keep and if you actually did soemthing constructive yourself to unite fans instead of lining your pockets with the recent crap than perhaps people wouldnt need these sites.

Lets look at the evidence:

NPGMC never sent out my copy of Rave IN2 in year 1
NPGMC shut down customer accounts when they felt the site had run its course...departing with the membership money
NPGMC ballsed up my one chance to get priority tickets by not recognising me as a member.

Prince.org put me in contact with somebody who had a decent seat fro sale for 21/9 show

Prince.org put me in contact with soembody who had a ticket for the amazing aftershow

Prince.org doesnt charge me

Watch out Prince.....I might sue you for using the word Purple and Dove in your songs....and I better not see my face in teh crowd at any concerts footage

I am sooooo completely confused about what's going. I'm going to keep reading to see if I can get an handle on it, but I was under the impression that he was going after bootleg and pirated stuff. Now, it seems he's going after all images of him outside of his site???? Okay, doesn't make sense to me. At this point I'm going to refrain for saying what I'm really thinking right now just in case I'm not getting the right info, but my odometer is moving into "this is some crazy mess" side.

I think I'll start following Paul McCartney's music more closely. At least he appreciates his fans.
If you like Paul McCartney give a chance to Neil Finn / Crowded House's music too, everything is not awesome but it's often great.

I didn't make up the current nature of copyright and trademark legislation, I'm not saying that any of the above is necessarily "right". But, as an individual, I support a person's RIGHT to legally defend and protect their work.

From what I remember (however I could be mistaken), the symbol is a registered trademark, so he is well within his right to dispute how that mark is used. Though I appreciate that doesn't bode well for those with the tattoos....

I agree with the concept that an artist should have control over the way his image is portrayed. I agree with you that Prince should sue anyone that tries to make money over his work or image illegally.....but I strongly disagree with the censorship of the personal opinions expressed by his fans on this site and others like it. You should never be able to censor someone's feelings about you,...if President Bush can't sue people for doing and saying things about the way his image is portrayed, then who the hell is Prince to try to sue people for doing the same thing? I think this lawsuit against his fansites will only make him more irrelevant in the music business.

I understand the copyright infringement well. Im an artist myself. I will protect my rights to ensure that my work doesnt get improperly misused. BUT....
when you put ur work out there for public use or share with the public or even if the public expresses the work in a loving way or appreciative way, THAT'S A DIFFERENT ISSUE ALL TOGETHER!!!

For example, look at the the Honda lovers who modify their cars. You dont see Honda going after them when they modify their cars or take the Honda logo and re-stylize it??? They love their cars...and it's a good thing for Honda.

As for Prince, ANY support or pubilicity is good for him....whether if its expressing it in a song, artwork, poetry or a video.

I agree with you completely paintedlady, perhaps I should have stated this outright in my first post (save any misunderstanding) - I don't agree with censorship of personal opinion, I apologise if you thought I supported his camp in this part. you're missing the point again, this has nothing to do with belief or religious views.i dont subscribe to the "christian" sect i have my own path and therefore judging people on what they believe isnt karmically correct. now the point os the reason that this is happening is because "he" does not want to be spoken about or his name said, or any pictures etc etc. when your are a celebrity you have to face the factors are going to happen.

he does not own the name "Prince" nor the "symbol" this is the cat who tried to sue a spaghetti company back in 1983 because it was named "Prince" this aint the 1st time he fell on his face and this my friend will not be the last,

Yeah right, and as we saw in London, all the casual concert-goers went to hear 1-2 songs maximum and spent the rest of the shows walking up and down the aisles to purchase more alcohol and end the night fighting. Hardly a desirable crowd. If he raised the ticket prices then that bunch of people wouldn't be there, but then the venues would be small and that "tip of the iceberg" would matter. Quite a lot actually.
[Edited 11/6/07 8:54am]

Hell no. I'm not a casual fan and I would love to have a three or four hour Prince concert. However, I would still be drinking like a fish in the concert. Although I wouldn't walk the aisles buying it, it's too expensive. I would sneak mine in. lol Don't be raising concert prices to keep folks out. Prince has fans that actually like to drink and party also. All his fans aren't stuffy. And dammitt, give us smokers a smoking section up front. lol

We both agree Prince should protect himself....it is his right within the law to do just that. But, for his own sake, I just hope that he realizes that we as a whole in this site DO support him, and whether he loves everything we do or not, I hope the people in Prince's camp, focus on all the good these types of sites have done for his career as a whole. wink
