What Do You Consider As An Offensive Thread?

We all have opinions on what we deem offensive. What do you consider offensive? Would you tolerate it or speak up?

I have always spoke up when I felt something was offensive with the understanding that another may not be bothered with it in the least lol

so that warrants instant deletion? shrug i'm sorry, it just seems so arbitrary to me what gets deleted and what gets locked.

well, if folks answer the question then it will help us mods learn what folks feel is acceptable and what isn't.

With the international community that is here, there are different cultures and beliefs. What might be offensive to some may not be to others.

No, speaking up or reporting a thread (or post) helps us to review that particular item - instead of wading through the entire org looking for things that may need attention.

Whether we take action on a reported thread is a whole different conversation. We review, we consider the source and we either decide to snip the comments, or lock or hide the entire thread...or not do anything at all...depending on the situation.

Having reviewed the two threads you speak of, if those are the ones, regarding luv4u deleting them completely, I'm totally behind her actions. I'd have done the same thing.

I Looked at just the thread titles and I know one I would have deleted for sure without a complaint filed and perhaps the second depending on it's inner content and complaints on it

peace!

While I do agree with that, if something is offensive to Americans for instance, why is it not enough to just say so because Europeans or Canadians are not offended?

so are you suggesting that it would be better to lock the thread (with an explanation) versus removing it?

oh and june7, you might want to check with ben about the mod email list...you were one of two mods who didn't respond to a roll call...could it be you are no longer receiving the emails? there have been a couple conversations that would benefit from your input.

No, I am not suggesting that at all.

My opinion is what difference does any of this make? If I think something is offensive and I let a mod know and that mod or other mods don't think it's offensive, then it stays.

Indeed it does. Because anyone could call anything offensive and we'd have no threads left. It is for sure a huge balancing act between protecting and allowing discussion and being sensitive to the, well, sensibilities of the community at large. We won't ever all agree. And we may not agree from one mod to the next. But we can work to try to have similar standards and be as consistent as possible.

You and I both know of an example that happened just last week. I let a comment stay that someone else reported and didn't like. I didn't find it offensive to anyone directly nor the community at large and that person complaining went round and round with me on it. I forwarded to you for your opinion as well and pretty much all the mods agreed it was something we could let stay. This is not to say I treated the orger rudely and I did fully consider their comments, or I wouldn't have asked other mods for their opinion as well. I considered that maybe I was the insensitive one. But in the end, I really didn't think so.
I don't think we should be censoring anything just cause one person deems it offensive as it has the potential to severely limit speech here.
But it's our duty as mods to take the reports seriously as well.

Not with that kind of defeatist attitude it won't, missy!

I'm sorry, I know you're frustrated, but then, why bother? Why bother even commenting or visiting this forum? Should we not even try? Should there not even be mods?

Each forum may have a different level of what is "offensive" as well

P&R mods may have to be a bit more careful with offensive topics
( or comments ) then Mods in GD may have to be (?) Maybe

I honestly don't know why I bother. Maybe I'm hoping Ben will actually see what I'm saying and actually give a damn?

I always speak my mind and it's gotten me in trouble on here more than once. If I think I'm being done an injustice then I'll speak on it and some things that go on here are unfair, the favoritism for example, but there is no grievance process and that sucks. I wish tihs place were more of a democracy.

i think thats the key right there. sometimes its even helpful to do a mini-thread jack and warn people in a thread

[hey folks, this topic is borderline...lets keep it within org rules -sos]

at least that way folks feel they have someone to go to when things escalate.

I checked into this last night, and could not get into the mod forum any longer... perhaps the address is no longer correct. I'm going to change the status of my email so that I can get the emails without having to log off of my other site each time. I don't want to put my main email address down, cuz with prince.org, it fills up so fast with requests.

I'll work with Ben on this.
