Honestly Discuss Site Moderation, Part II

Okay...

Regarding our (the mods) action (or inaction) - it's good to have an open dialogue of what is on Orger's minds.

The other thread is quite long.

A lot of changes have been made or brought out as a result of the thread sosgemini created, I'd like to keep that going.

It's your forum... speaketh.

I think he might be referring to that the actions of "moderation" are actually gonna be carried out in the real senses of the word. [snipped - Keep personal stuff in an Orgnote. Thanks - June7]

No need to be facetious, it was a genuine question, and it wasn't directed towards you. Seriously - what changes have resulted from that other thread?

What I was referring to may not be visible to the regular Orger...

Perhaps, but most likely not.

Many internal issues were discussed openly in the last forum that we, as moderators, took to heart. As a result of that last thread, my relationship with the other mods, and some of the Orgers has changed for the better. Sadly, some Orger relationships have gone sour. You can't win them all.

As far as moderator changes, I won't go into that... they know what I'm talking about.

I guess that the powers that be are just hoping that this all blows over and 9s will be forgotten about. shrug

Somewhat worried about the response perhaps?

But he has killed a few threads! And murdered plenty of jokes! confused

Anyway, I agree, where is he? We demand answers! Answers we have no right to demand! But we're gonna demand them anyway!

This is fantastic. An honest discussion about moderation where new moderation methods cannot be discussed and where replies are snipped. thumbs up!

Please, one moderately intelligent moderator step forward and explain at least in moderate detail what changes have been made to moderation.

As I said, the changes I'm referring to may not even be considered actual physical changes... just the way we as moderators approach things with eachother or with you guys...

Damn ian, can a person just take a blanket statement as that? A blanket statement...

No? Okay, then let me go a little further...

In my opinion... we show eachother more respect regarding how or who we moderate. As it should be. We have a better understanding of eachother... again, IMO.

smile

That is all I was referring to. sigh

this is partly from another thread, so sorry if you're reading this again wink

I think it was Matt who said it sorta was common sense to take the users history into account when dealing with rule-violations. If the user has a history of repeated flaming etc etc the decision to deactivate is more quickly taken. Fair enough.

But that's just one aspect of that users history. You may wanna also look at the number of posts (in the case of Althom, disregard the one-emoticon posts) and/or the time spent in here.

If someone has logged in here 6 times, one saying hello, one to ask cloudbuster if it's allright to jack-a-thread, and four posts with racist stuff, it's not a strange decision to deactivate. It will also not stirr peeps in here, which of course will happen if a long-time user is deactivated.

IMHO a long time user (LTU) deserves some credit as well. If a LTU breaks site-rules moderators step in, take the users history into account, and can choose for deactivation when necessary. It's what moderators do and are here for.

In afterthought however (after a few days, practically speaking) the abovementioned other aspect of a user-history should come into consideration.
It will a) be more fair , b) prevent a lot of restlessness among other users (these kinds of threads) and perhaps most compelling for you mods wink c) will save a lot of mods putting time in this matter
You don't scare me; i got kids

Some orgers seem to get deified on here while others get demonized. But in both cases, I think it distorts some people's perception of whats fair when moderating occurs.
