I am also trying to arrange a trip for next year. Always wanted to go to Minneapolis but never made it - sad to be going now Prince is gone - but we still want to go. I'm looking at flights in both April and June but trying to figure out what would be the better time to travel. I wonder will anything be on in the city, to mark either date - I would have loved to have been outside first Avenue with other fans on April 21st.. Also as someone else commented, would like to visit PP when we are over as this could be a one off trip!! It's just so difficult trying to plan a trip when you have no idea what will be going on!!! How many days would you recommend staying in MN??

At least 3. More if you want to hit the Mall of America.

Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

I know what u guys mean but,you have to read his thoughts on death being about celebration.June 7th i fear will be a only celeb type thing prob cool Without org invites js.And will prob be overcrowded.

I do understand and get what you are saying from that perspective.

From my perspective, I wouldn't be celebrating his death or even memorializing it. I understand the beauty and peacefulness of him 'transitioning' - however, for me, I want to celebrate his LIFE and gratitude and beautifulness that I had the awesome opportunity to live at the same time as Prince.

I may not even go June 7th , madhouse indeed, but in June most definately. Wen the flowers are blooming and trees getting new leaves and birds singing......Prince and I have to agree to disagree on the birthday thing. smile Purple hugs to you all.

Yeah, that's the big question: will there be any special events scheduled around either of those dates?

I have a feeling we won't have the answer to that question before PP tour tickets for 2017 go on sale. According to the PP website, that will happen in "mid-November." So those of us looking at April or June might have to decide without knowing what will be going on. And PP tour tickets around those dates might sell quickly.

And whow knows, they may schedule events again in October on the anniversary of all the events this year! Plus of course Oct. 28 will be the one-year anniversary of PP officially becoming a museum... nuts

I'm still leaning toward April. I'll probably be out there for 5-7 days but I have family in the area I will also want to visit.

When you go, are you planning to travel around the area and visit various Prince-related sites? Such as former homes, First Avenue, etc. ? You could easily spend two days doing that stuff alone.

Thanks Candace - well yes we'd hope to do and see everything Prince related as we are travelling from Ireland and who knows when we'll get back there. I'm looking at 20th - 23rd April at least and flights via Chicago are €650pp at the moment so we gotta do this right. I'm leaning towards April coz 23rd is my own birthday and as I was away this year - hated not being with my buddies at that awful time (my partner's not a Prince fan)

I think we are just going to have to book flights and hotel and hope we get PP tickets and catch some other event or sights when we are there. I'd love a Prince night in First Ave, no cover band - just Prince tunes meeting other Prince fans.

What Spike Lee party?

Last year Spike had a Prince Born Day block party in Brooklyn..Free..it was really fun. After he thanked everyone for coming to his annual party..I assume it's happening every year..He does it for Michael Jackson as well

That raises the question: where would ppl want to stay? In downtown MPLS? Or somewhere closer to Chanhassen?

On my October trip we booked in downtown MPLS. Originally because the tribute concert was supposed to be in MPLS (it was moved to St. Paul), and also because of all the other events in MPLS. Staying down there can be expensive, not just for the hotel but also for parking (if you have a car with you).

This might be useful for those wondering about the typical weather and temperatures at different times of year... Click the link to look up Chanhassen weather data for the last few years.

I was thinking the same - was veering towards downtown Minneapolis but agree it's pretty pricey for the dates in question!!!

Yes, it was so helpful to see all the sites laid out like that! I made a copy of it, over time I'm gonna make my own version (and share it when its finished).

As for lodging, I took the plunge and made a reservation for April 17-22 at the Eden Prairie Hyatt Place.

I can cancel/modify that up April 16. So I may move to another hotel if I can get a better rate, or adjust the dates a bit. But, I think the April time frame works best for me.

I vote June 7th. It's summer! And I'd rather celebrate his birth. Plus, it gives us More time to prepare for the trip. I'd love to go and meet up with some fams. I was pretty disappointed that I couldn't make it to the tribute. sad

I vote June 7th mostly because it's a litte more time to save and daughter's dance competitions take over my Spring calender sad Plus weather is nicer. I think we got REALLY lucky in Oct. on weather. Some Octobers and I'm sure Aprils, will be pretty cold, not that it's a huge deal, but just saying. As far as celebrating his "birth" day or "day he went to heaven" I am indifferent. He did say that he will celebrate the day he dies, so I think either is appropriate. Miss our little Princy. How wise was he? Nothing could get him down. Not even death. A strong spirit indeed.

Personally, I'm gonna wait to see what all will be going on at Paisley Park during my stay. If they have events every evening, then I'm staying in Chanhassen and will drive into Mpls for more shopping and site-seeing.

Special themed experiences vary each tour day:

  • On Thursdays, all day, starting December 1, VIP tour ticket holders will have the unprecedented opportunity to record live vocals over a short segment of a Prince song in the legendary Studio B control room – the same studio where Prince recorded countless hits, including songs from Sign O’ The Times, Graffiti Bridge and Emancipation. VIP tour ticket holders who record in Studio B will be able to take the live mix home with them on USB.
  • On Friday and Saturday evenings starting on December 2 and 3, from 6PM on, guests will be welcomed into the “Paisley Park After Dark” experience, in the tradition of the celebrated Paisley Park After Dark events hosted by Prince through the years. Friday evenings will offer fans a dance party with a DJ in Prince’s private NPG Music Club, in addition to the Paisley Park tour. Saturday evenings will be Movie Night, featuring Prince movies and exclusive, rare performance footage – including video segments never before seen – playing in the Paisley Park Soundstage at 9PM, with different movies and videos shown each week, in addition to the Paisley Park tour. On each Friday and Saturday evening, special dining selections will be available for purchase at the Paisley Park kitchen.
  • On Sundays, all day, starting December 4, the “Brunch Experience” VIP tour package will include a special meal in the NPG Music Club, featuring Prince music, videos and many of his favorite foods.

wonderboy

I plan to go back next June for a couple days. I've seen it in the fall now so early summer I think would be fun.

I have no plans to celebrate or even recognize the day of his passing. It's just too sad. But the birthday is entirely different and has a long precident.

For those planning a trip from far away, I covered all the major Prince sites in two days with a little time left over. Everything is reasonably close together which helps a bunch.

Until the Hard Rock in Mall of America creates a Prince booth, I would not bother adding a visit to that place, especially if you plan to eat, on the Prince list.

I'm still tentatively planning to go up there around that time frame. However I plan to schedule my PP tours* on days other than April 21. I'll leave that day open so I could attend anything special that is scheduled (if there is anything).

Hmm, the 21st is a Friday...I wonder if they'll have the PP After Dark dance party that evening? confuse

* I say "tours" because I want to do the VIP tour again...but I also want to go to one of those PP After Dark events, probably the Saturday movie night. And that requires buying a GA tour ticket! But who knows, things could change by April!

Hmm what do you think they might do for the 21st? I didn't even consider that there would be something special, but now I think it would be silly to think there wouldn't be lol.

I didn't realize that you had to do the GA tour ticket if you wanted to do the after dark event though cry sad Is that really so? I don't see anything about it in my email.

Currently, its $60 (+fees I suppose) to do the PP After Dark on either Friday or Saturday. That includes a GA tour. Scroll down a ways on this page to see the details:

Ah, you're right! I don't know what I should do, then! I definitely was planning on the VIP tour but this complicates things. I'd be interested to see what the first people have to say about PP After Dark. Anyone here planning to go in December?
