I thought this might be of interest to some of you. On Saturday 30th June I'm co-promoting and co-DJing a Prince-themed party with the admittedly not-staggeringly-original name of Controversy, upstairs in the Caroline Of Brunswick pub in Brighton.

I'm sure you know the drill by now: Prince classics plus his protegees, influences, covers and rip-offs, with films and vids on the big screen, and themed cocktails etc. It'll be largely hits-based and golden era-centric, so this maybe isn't one for hardcore Prince trainspotters, although I'm sure we'll throw a few obscurities into the mix. Anyway, it's only two quid, and what else are you gonna do on a Saturday night?

Your hosts DJ SMOGO (Envy, Cazza Karaoke) and SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful, Spellbound) present a special nite dedicated 2 the greatest musical genius of the modern age. U can expect 2 hear the cream of Prince himself, plus a scattering of Prince covers, Prince protegees, Prince collaborations, Prince’s influences and Prince rip-offs: a housequaking glam-slam of dance-music-sex-romance, guaranteed 2 take U straight 2 erotic city.

U will also see Prince’s classic movies and videos on the big screen, as well as special cocktails like the ‘PURPLE RAIN’ (Parfait Amour-based), ‘RASPBERRY BERET’ (Chambord-based) and ‘HEAD’ (basically the same as a ‘Blow Job‘!), plus ‘PEACH & BLACK’ shots (half-and-half black Sambuca and Baileys), all very reasonably-priced. And we’re not going 2 force U 2 dress the part… but if U got the look, we’ll be delirious.

WHAT HAPPENED AT CONTROVERSY - THE PRINCE PARTY (OPENING NIGHT!)

First things first: the opening night of Controversy - The Prince Party was a massive success. So massive, in fact, that we’re definitely gonna do another one at some point. If you want to hear about that, it’s really important that you go to http://www.facebook.com/c...rinceparty RIGHT NOW and click ‘Like’, to make sure you get the invitation.

On the evidence of the first one, you’d be crazy to miss it. In a carefully-decorated room with Prince LP sleeves hanging from the ceiling and assorted lyrics posted on the walls, and with Prince-themed shooters on sale at the bar and Under The Cherry Moon, Purple Rain and assorted Prince videos showing on the big screen, your DJs (Smogo and Simon Price) had THE best fun playing over four hours of Prince and Prince-related tunes to a roomful of people who were determined to shake that ass and make the house quake. Not just to the big hits (of which we played just about every one), and the hand-written and Facebook-submitted requests (we got through most of ’em), but also the less familiar tunes by associated acts and Prince himself.

Prince fans are nothing if not committed: one Prince-lover had driven down from Cambridge and had to be back there at 10am the next morning. There was a healthy London contingent too, including some whose dedication extended to hanging around the train station till stupid o’clock to get back home. At times you literally had to queue to get on and off the dance floor. And the arms-round-shoulders singalong to “Purple Rain” at the end will live long in the memory.

Hah, I've just remembered that the weirdest thing happened at Controversy on Saturday night. A bloke came up to me and said "Not wishing to be patronising, but I think it's great that someone who looks like you is a Prince fan!" Now, at the time I was wearing lacy fingerless gloves, a lacy ruff round my neck, purple eyeshadow, purple nail varnish, purple boots, heavy eyeliner, a velvet jacket with a Prince symbol badge on it, and a massive heart-shaped Prince earring from the Lovesexy tour. (Also, unseen to him, I have a Prince symbol tattoo.) The bloke, meanwhile, was wearing a rugby shirt, jeans and trainers.
