DJ class - what to know

Hi,

I may soon be visiting a guy who's running DJ classes, and they're quite expensive. I'd want to know from DJ's here, or simply folks who know about this type of thing, what to ask this guy? Is it customary in such a situation to ask for the guy's demotape? What equipment should be there at the place?

Thanks.

A DJ class?!? Really?!?

What else is there to know except this - play music people like to dance to!

Man, I'd think twice before forking ANY money over for a "DJ class" - especially big bucks!

I'm sure any salesperson at a Guitar Center or similar store will tell you everything you need to know about equipment, and for free!

BTW, I was one of the first DJ's in America. I'm sure technology has changed, but the goal hasn't. Make people dance!

I've worked in a facility where these type of courses have been held.

They'll teach you things like how to operate mixers, how to "beat match"and how to use computer programs that interface with vinyl decks (eg. "Serato"). Many probably will also tell you about the legal aspects - copyright issues, licensing etc.

I don't know what you should ask the instructors exactly. Ask about things that are unclear to you?

They should have at least two vinyl decks, a proper DJ mixer and a laptop connected to each other. You should be able to get your hands on them yourself too.

Enjoy.

However, I have to say that it's a bit sad that these type of classes attract far more people than taking lessons on an instrument these days. confused

Thanks guys smile But there's no vinyl here in India, I think it's done only with CDs. Anyway, I've decided to hold off for the moment, because I have to get my finances in order 1st! (i.e. I can't afford it smile )

Anyway, thanks again.

If it's i an intuitive class they'd haveVinyl, CDJ's AND Laptops for examples, concept and history...

The most frequently used bits of kit (in nightclubs at least) are:

Technics SL-1210 Mk xx

Pioneer CDJ -1000 Mk xx

Laptop is commonly mac-based but software will either be Traktor or Serato (usually provided by the DJ)

Mixers are pretty much generic, it'll all be about the basic cooncept of EQing, Crosfading, use of Gain, monitoring etc.. but as say an Allen & Heath mixer has different features to a Pioneer, i'll totally be at the instructors discretion as to any bonus features he will teac outside the basic concepts...

If there's one question I would ask, it would probably, why do Dj's habitually go so far into the Red with their volumes, surely continually this would shorten the life of a mixer?

and maybe, what's more faithful, VU or LED metering... ORGers this is not supposed to be fodder for a thread debate... just suggesting subjective questions that could be asked at such DJ Classes...

also What to do if your laptop fails!!

A Colleague of mine who works in the same celebrity club as I had such a problem, music was dead for 10 minutes, management was furious - needless to say he was 'future endeavoured' - I'm still a CD/Vinyl guy!
