Anyone know about drum machines?

I'm planning on buying one soon for recording purposes. The problem is I know absolutely nothing about drum machines. Nothing. I have many questions and needs from whichever one I'm going to buy. If possible I'd like to be able to modify my own beats and keep them in a loop so they can serve as a metronome too. If possible I'd also like to be able to plug it into a guitar amp for amplification and effects.

So could anyone recommend some of the best ones?

I no longer use them myself but if I did, I'd still swear by the Alesis SR-16... legendary machine...

No Linn sounds tho', hahaha!

SR16 - da bomb!

Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Why don't you just use your computer or your phone?

Analong drum machines are becoming phased out, unless your a DJ, but even they're switching to digital
