played? or listened to?
I don't play either one.
but listening to them and comparing, would depend on the song.

Better is a subjective term. It all depends on what sound u like and the looks of course.
In my opinion the Stratocaster sounds warmer and has more attack. The Telecaster on the other hand has a raw and piercing sound (great for rock and blues). I don't like the shape of the Telecaster. It's uncomfortable to play and the Tele is also heavier. I love Strats.

Exactly, If your thinkin Funk rock, or just rockin out Strats are great
If your diggin Blues Jazz tones, Teles are great
Teles are a good alternative to gibson/ les paul guitars
those sounds are undeniably blues but teles get pretty close
and they're also good for stripped down meters type of funk

How would I know the difference between the two? I have a "Johnson" that is of an allusion to one of the "Fenders", model-wise. But, I don't know whether it is a stratocaster and telecaster.

Rowdy

The Stratocaster was intended to supercede the Telecaster, so in that sense it's better. Amusingly, the Jaguar was supposed to be the next step forward from the Stratocaster.

If you want to beat someone to death with a guitar, and have it still functional afterwards, get a Telecaster. If you like knobs, switches, bells and whistles, get a Strat.

If that picture in your avatar is yours then u have a Stratocaster copy. To hear and feel the difference between a Strat and a Tele: go to a guitar shop.
