Thanks.

Had a little look on eBay. The Triton Studio is kinda steep. I can't afford that.

How does the Mo Phatt work? Does it channel it's sounds through a synth?

The Mo Phatt is a sound module. you'd need a keyboard controller to make it work. They did make a keyboard version called the MK-6.

The Mo Phatt is the funkiest module (for cheap) that's been released in years. The sounds in it are on a lot of hip-hop records. Its got some decent R&B sounds, too. As for jazz, most of the sounds are bare bones. You can pick up pretty much any keyboard made in the last 5 years or so and find at least decent jazz sounds. The funk is in the Phatt, though. Its funny because many people want the Mo Phatt but the keyboard version tends to go for pretty cheap. Most people already have a main sound source/workstation like the Triton or the Yamaha Motif or the Roland Fantom (they all run about $2K), so they just want a module for that extra "umph". Check on Ebay. There are probably some MK-6s on there floating around for a few hunderd dollars.
If you're looking for something with a sequencer on it, you might want to check out the Triton LE (click) which goes for about $650 or less (I wouldn't pay more than that for one). It doesn't have a sampler on it but there is a sampler upgrade kit you cn buy for it andinstall yourself if you eve want to go that route. For the money, you really get the most of what you are asking for; good R&B sounds, good jazz sounds and decent hip-hop sounds. Its a scaled down version of the Triton Studio but its really not scaled down all that much - except for the price. wink Hope this helps.

I think the Motif is more of a pop board. It sounds really good, though. Its cheaper than a Triton Studio.

Really? curious as to why you say that. I'm glad cuz i'm mnore Pop/R&B myself smile, but most of the preloaded drum tracks are all hip hop and house.

Very little standard pop beats at least in the preset drums.

then again i'm stil learning how to use this thing. in fact, coudl use some help!! like i did this song, but if I change the drum kit it wont' save it.

You can turn this Phrase Voice off by going to Pattern Mode F5 Track Voice, and selecting Off for the Track with the Preset Phrase that you want to change Drum kits on. This is on Page 218 of the manual. Then you can select a new Voice in Mix Mode, F3[Voice]
I absolutely hate the way the menus are laid out on the Motif. I had an ugly time geting the Motif to talk to Protools. I've got it down now but when you're trying to start a session and the clock is ticking, its ugly.
The fact that so many R&B producers use the Triton is what drew me to the assessment of the Triton as an "R&B board". Whereas the Motif certainly has sounds in it that can be used in hip-hop, its primary soundset sounds pop to me.
