nayroo2002 and VinaBlue do SOTT --- #5 on soundclick! Backstory: http://www.prince.org/msg/15/141840
Ok, here it is! nayroo2002 asked for a singer on his cover of Sign the Times. I thought it would be fun to give it a try, since I always sing a harmony with Prince when I listen to this tune. I really liked nayroo's rendition as well. He gave it just enough of a twist to sound a bit different, yet stayed true to the original vibe of the song. Enjoy... http://www.soundclick.com...amusic.htm Any feedback/ suggestions would be appreciated! I hardly put any effects on the vocals: a tiny bit of compression on the main lead vocal and a tiny bit of reverb on the harmony backup vocal. Other than that, it's pretty raw. No eq. Here is the download/play history: 4/24: Plays: 33 Downloads: 6 4/25: Plays: 21 Downloads: 5 4/26: Plays: 13 Downloads: 4 4/27: Plays: 19 Downloads: 2 4/28: Plays: 25 Downloads: 2 4/29: Plays: 26 Downloads: 14 4/30: Plays: 15 Downloads: 4 5/01: Plays: 32 Downloads: 3 5/02: Plays: 42 Downloads: 7 5/03: Plays: 22 Downloads: 5 5/04: Plays: 8 Downloads: 1 5/05: Plays: 20 Downloads: 10 Total Plays: 276 Downloads: 63 I'm amazed it's getting played and downloaded so much! Boy that sucked!
Covering that song is commiting comercial suicide. It's perfection as it is. Try one of his worst songs like tambourine or ronnie talk to russia instead. I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

I realize it's hard to stand up to the original on such a well-known tune. I went to the store after I posted this and in the car I heard someone cover "Dancing With Myself" on the radio and it was HORRIBLE... I honestly don't feel like my vocals on this weren't as bad as that! I don't think covering a lesser-known tune instead would make much of a difference. Tambourine is a great tune, but I don't know if I could pull that off... especially the scream... [Edited 4/25/05 6:19am]

Sorta sexy/sultry Vina...
I can almost visualize you as you sing. ~Smile. I don't know much... although I would say put a bit more power at moments... without affecting the sultry/sexy tone.

Your vocals were cool, Vina, but i'm biased The music wasn't bad, but it didn't move me like the original. I dunno, maybe a funkier edge instead of the mellow pop feel?
BTW, is this the same guy you worked with on "the Groove"? I can be a true friend, or a worthy adversary. The choice is yours.

Music - try adjusting some of the levels on individual notes - especially on the main keyboard riff that plays throughout the entire song - it's all the same volume: overwhelmingly loud.
Great vox, and most of the music ain't THAT bad!! The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Great vox, and most of the music ain't THAT bad!! Thanks for giving it a spin! The "main keyboard riff" is actually tied into the drum programming done on an old Dr.Rhythm Section. I thought the same of it, also, but if it's turned down, so are the drums (what a dilemma!) "Whatever skin we're in

Thanks for the nice words, Tal! I agree with a remix. The song got bounced from Germany to Cali, so it's been on quite a trip so far! I believe Vina ripped it back to WAV to lay her vocals down on it (can't say enough how great her part sounds ) and put it back into mp3 format for posting. Glad you listened!!!
