When did NPGMC "tell us" about this download? Don't get me wrong -- this is great, offering an alternative outlet for the music (in an alternative format mind you). The secretiveness is something else though!

Oh wait -- I just got a flash -- maybe this vague DIGITAL GARDEN posting of June 24th is what you're referring to:

June 24:
THE N.E.W.S. is EVERYWHERE!!! Legally and otherwise!

AAARGGGHHH Prince!

128kbps quality. Bear in mind there are two qualities to download. One warning though you can download both but the first one you play uses your licenses.

you can't play the other track with the same license though. Both files are the same size i.e. 12.8mb so make sure you play the wma9 file since MS claim that is the better quality file.

why is Prince selling his music thru companies like MSN? i thought he was trying to cut out these types of multi-national companies? he's so confusing all the time?
mind you, i'm happy that he is trying to get his name out there but why thru MSN?
why not Rolling Stone?
maybe he is going thru new channels but with different, eclectic product.

Why is he putting his stuff on MSN and not at the iTunes Music Store?

Once you have downloaded the song and you go to play it it connects up to a website (not sure which one) and downloads the licence to your machine.

You can still burn a cd and therefore I assume rip it from that cd to other formats???

Remember that Billboard just started adding download sales to their albums and singles charts.

I'm a bit of a novice at this, but does anyone know if iTunes 2 in Mac OS9 can play these files?

I don't have a CD burner, and it's not really convenient to use Media Player.

Before anyone says it, yes I know I need a new computer.

No, WMA is a proprietary format, which means it only plays on Media Player.

I'm pretty sure, anyway. wink

iTunes won't deal with WMA.

As noted above, you can use Microsoft's Media Player for the Mac.

Another alternative is MPlayer OS X
http://www.versiontracker...cosx/16623

MPlayer supports playlists and a whole load of audio and video formats, including WMA and ASF.

but since you've got OS9, I don't know.
