I subscribed, got 3 wonderful albums, 1 t-shirt, a lot of other material, old videos, some live shots, etc. It was a cool experience. If Prince does such a site with same amount of stuff again: I will subscribe... I really dont understand all the bashing... the second charge cant be the problem... some technician made a mistake, so what? Here's one of the problems: Ultimately, the site, which is set to debut before the Target street date, will have to thrive apart from those first three albums. Clay says future plans for Lotus flow3r.com include a hybrid documentary-music video. But the deal-sealer, he concedes, is the potential for streaming live, VIP-only concerts from Prince's Los Angeles mansion. "There could be a live chat going on with members watching a concert, and Prince could actually play requests," Clay says. He also claims a colleague has organized 10 albums of old Prince music never released in any form. Should there exist an all-tuba record Prince recorded half out of his mind back in 1988, now he's got a place to let it toot—if only he can commit to digitizing all his diamonds and pearls.

You clearly stated a web designer should not produce a site without all the content up front. The content of that site is clearly still under production, yet the site works. Are they backed by a machine is the question....? TSP i think "MAYBE" backed by a machine so they are not a real indie band, big corps like music "fans" to think bands are indie when they are not.... Look with respect TSP are no way near Prince's league ..sorry You're going in circles. 1. No major label for The Pumpkins. “For many years I’ve been really unhappy with the stupidity of the music business,” admits Smashing Pumpkin leader Billy Corgan. “But now I am free from corporate meddling. No contracts, no deadlines to meet.” But he’s far from idle. Corgan is quote busy writing, rehearsing a new band, recording, exploring side projects and starting up his own subscription service.
2. Whatever league you deem them to be in, their website is online, working, and totally disproves your hypothesis. The content is not in the hands of the developers, yet they have a functioning, successful website. The point isn't about TSP or any other artist, the point is you're making excuses that make no sense and are easily disproved. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

But if he was working to get more content added and trying to work things out in a private way, I support him on that. Why was Prince contracting a game developer for a website? Never said he was, but it sounds like you wish to place all the blame squarely on his doorstep and that view is incredibly naive. Expert or not, the site did not deliver content. That's on the artist, not the designer. The site continued to charge people because it was a bust and abandoned by the artist. NOBODY was paying attention to it and we saw the results. A thriving, vibrant community would never have had that happen. Again, everyone involved shares some blame. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. Great TSP is indie ...but that does not change anything ! The blame is 90% on Prince. He never delivered any worthwhile content for the entire year, and he approved the design of the site in the first place. Do you think the designers came up with the $77 for a year model? Did they have control over what content Prince gave them? Those were the two biggest problems with the site, which was predictable, due to how Prince has handled his other sites. He rarely, rarely, rarely gives out any unreleased or new music.

Prince is an idiot. He does use iTunes and Amazon.... what's wrong with Prince fans / fams don't they know how to use the internet Well there's technicalities. It looks like itunes has the warner stuff through "Come", and then they have a couple singles from 3121, F.U.N.K., and Planet earth.. so it's kinda spotty. I'm guessing what chookalana meant was.. Why doesn't Prince just use itunes to release new tracks as they come instead of an exclusive $77 a year site? I see they do these special "season ticket" packages now for different artists.. like Depeche Mode and Pet shop Boys come to mind, where you pay a fee at the release date.. you get an advance of the album, first video, b-sides, and then you get the rest of the stuff from that project as released. Difference is that in this case it helps to be a corporation like itunes because they have public accountability. geez i never thought I'd be saying that either...

Do I care...not much...the website wasn't great, could have been better, I got 3 albums and a t-shirt. maybe over priced, but I enjoyed some of the videos. The NPGMC was great, but hey why all the overreaction.....Tell the cats to chill...is what I say....I flew all the way back from a football match in Dublin to make it to le Grand Palais with 50 minutes to spare in October...great concert...This is what I like 2 talk about....memories...after-shows....concerts....not negativity....
Life can be great, crap and unpredictable...but it's not all Prince's fault...He's not perfect, he's not God, Jehova or Allah....He a great musician and long may he continue....58 albums ++++....yet we're not happy.... there's worse sh1t going on out there in this crazy world... Once wooed by the Purple One, Clay found himself frozen out not long after the LotusFlow3r launch. He says at one point he was peppering Prince with so many e-mails about the site and its future that the singer called Clay and told him to cut it out. About a month ago, Prince relayed the order for the site to be shut down. Now Clay is in the process of handing over LotusFlow3r.com files to a new Prince representative who Clay describes as “me 2.0.”

I'm trying hard to see both sides in this. But since we will likely never hear Prince actually speak about what happened, at least this guy came forward about it.
Didn't Prince learn from the Kevin Smith experience..signed confidentiality agreements are going to trump "he said he wouldn't tell!" in a court anyday if it ever got to something like that. So according to Clay, it sounds like he was asking for material and updates, so he could help realize this vision prince initially had. like "Hey Prince.. were you going to send any of those special fan-only tracks anytime soon? We developed this nice layout grid for your video-wall.. we just need something to put on it!" At this point I can't say "It was the web designer's fault! He shoulda put up a lot more sparkly distractions! he was contracted to do what he does to help Prince's music and vids look really appealing and fun on a glossy website. When that person says "Stop calling me!" what do you do? But what REALLY pisses me off is that Prince has told him allegedly to shut the site down a couple months before the billing of the new year. Not "put up a message that says "Eye'm sorry but due to my disappointment in the lack of interest 4 my site eye am closing it down. Eye felt that eye deserve more fams and this is not worth my ef4t. Remaining membRships will not b renewed. Thank U 4 Ur support" That's all it would take. Otherwise.. it just looks shady and dishonest. I'm glad this was published in WSJ though of all places. It shows that there may actually be some interest in his shady business practices and attempts to stop them by public shame and exposure.

Prince had recruited them to build a platform for his upcoming three-album release. The result, LotusFlow3r.com, resembled a galactic aquarium, featuring doodads like a rotating orb that played videos. The promise: fans who ponied up $77 for a year-long membership would receive the three new albums, plus an ensuing flow of exclusive content, like unreleased tracks and archival videos.
After the hyped launch of LotusFlow3r.com, Prince became an absentee landlord, Clay said. “We only got stuff in dribs and drabs.” Clay declined to say how many paying members the site did attract, but he speculated that the number was a disappointment to Prince. A year later, LotusFlow3r has gone dark, thousands of Prince’s fans are very annoyed and Clay has been dismissed from Prince’s kingdom almost as abruptly as he was invited in. You live and you learn. Well...some people do. he got paid To Sir, with Love
