When I was a boy I learned in church that true Christianity was not a religion but was a relationship with Jesus Christ. I was taught through examples in scripture that religion was the practice of man's inadequate attempts to reach God, and that "being a Christian" was accepting God's effort to reach us through His Son Jesus Christ. I learned from reading the Gospels that Jesus' angriest condemnation and greatest confrontation was not with sinful laymen but with religious people wanting to protect their system.

Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1987) lists definitions under religion as "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose of the universe…devotional and ritual observations…a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." These sound very high-minded until we realize that those who killed Jesus in Jerusalem, and those from other religions who kill Christians today, conform with every word of this definition. Those who burn Christian houses in Indonesia and Sudan have beliefs, ritual observations and moral codes. They are religious.

I was taught that religion kills, but a relationship with Christ gives life (John 16:2, II Corinthians 3:1-6). Religious rulers repeatedly sent people to kill Muslims in the crusades. (Jesus said, "Love your enemies.") A religion sent Muslims to enslave and conquer Europe all the way from North Africa to Poland and Austria. (Mohammed endorsed killing infidels.) Those Catholics and Protestants who kill civilians in Northern Ireland are not truly Christians, they are religious people.

Throughout history envious religious communities have formed alliances with the world to oppose the message of the cross. (Acts chapter 17)

Christians wanting to circle their wagons in our own national shakeout and find protection with political language such as the world's "great religions" need encouragement from Christ's persecuted Body. Many Americans do not yet want to face the truth that being a Christian might jeopardize their institutions. The Apostle Paul hits the nail on the head in Galatians when he exposes those called Judiazers who wanted to have it both ways: retain the approval of the Jewish religion yet be a Christian. Paul refused to let this poisonous compromise enter the Body. He wrote: Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Galatians 6:12 NIV

Matthew Henry writes in his commentary about these interfaith Judiazers:

They were men who were afraid of suffering… They were willing to sleep in a whole skin, and to save their worldly cargo, and cared not though they made shipwreck of faith and a good conscience. That which they chiefly aimed at was to please the Jews, and to keep up their reputation among them, and so to prevent the trouble that Paul, and other faithful professors of the doctrine of Christ, lay open to.

Paul teaches in this chapter that we are not saved by obeying religious laws but by believing in Christ and becoming a new creation. He warned believers to avoid the religious trap, the same trap that once had held him as a Pharisee. (Galatians 1:13-24)

The words religion and religious are only used seven times in the New Testament. In most cases it is used as a legalistic negative. The word saved is used 57 times and suffers great ridicule from the religious.

The persecuted church we serve are happy to have escaped from religion. One man who found Christ and escaped the laws and rituals of Islam said "don't ask me why I have changed religions. I have not done that. I have been saved."

The Vietnamese underground church, meeting in homes and caves, now outnumber the communist party. Those we serve are persecuted because they stand up for Jesus and do not bow down to the world powers and its religions. Yet an ecumenical net strengthened by cowards since September 11 would have us here at home sit down together at the round table for a discussion about "religious similarities."

Stephen and Paul were beaten and killed for constantly presenting the Christ as revealed in scripture, not for sitting on "interfaith" councils under a Christless agenda to discuss how we can all get along by respectfully staying in our religious chairs. However much we respect and love others, the gospel is still an offense to many. The cross is an offense. If respect means that we do not graciously present the crucified Christ to the lost on every occasion, this respect comes from hell not from heaven for it has accomplished its purpose of closing our mouth. The religious can call it respect. I call it cowardice. (I Cor. 10:31-33; Gal. 5:10-11; I Peter 2:7-8; Rom. 9:33)

This is it America. This is your moment Christian. What is it going to be? Christians are not seated at an all-religions roundtable with spiritually equal access. This is an offense to the price paid for our salvation. God does not run a democracy. His Son was not elected by a majority. We are seated in heavenly places beside a throne with One – Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:6)

Was this not foretold?

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. Matthew 24:7

One more thing:

Therefore be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Matthre 24:44

Better question is: has this not been happening since the dawn of men?

One more thing:

Therefore be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Matthre 24:44

I believe that the numerous plague outbreaks in europe during the middle ages made them believe the end times were near.
