Prince Afterjam NYC Report

I believe the word is CLUSTERFCUK. It might not be in Webster’s Dictionary, but this event last night could serve as a definition. I arrived at the club around Midnight, knowing how these Prince afterparties go, showtime is usually very late and confusion is the law of the land. I promptly had to goto the back of the line, which was not awful as later on cast members from Saturday Night Live(Maya Rudolph, and dude who played Prince a few weeks ago) were on line after my posse. The line wrapped up 56th street, down 11th avenue and back down 55th Street. I knew the show wasn’t gonna start soon as a truck pulled up to the back door to unload a few keyboards, guitars and pedals. The line moved slowly but surely, I asked a few of the security types in line about picking up tickets if I was a “member” I got everything from “member of what???” to “no everyone without a ticket same line…”. Finally around 1:35am we had gotten into the nicely heated atrium of the club, this is where the fun began.
There were 3 lines, one for people with Cash still trying to buy tickets, one for Ticketmaster and one for NPGMC members. Well not really lines, just masses of people huddled trying to get to each line. Thanks to the New York Attitude and sharp elbows(these would come in handy all thru the night) of my sister, I was able to simply pass my drivers license and my friends up to the front and receive our 4 tickets. At this point I realized the concert had just started from the cheers of the people. I’m not sure from the NPGMC members who lined up at 10pm(no way in HELL would I ever do that considering how much I’ve put up with Prince over the years), if they were able to get tickets early or if that “members get in early” crap applied, personally I doubt it. And waiting in line for 3hrs would not be worth it for me anyway on this nice brisk 40 degree with 20mph wind off the Hudson River night.
One we were frisked, and patted down, now the fun began. When this show was announced I wonder why at not a traditional music venue, Roseland, Bowery Ballroom, Hammerstien Ballroom, etc. Nice small 1000 seat+ music friendly venues. This club BLACK used to be Club Exit that was shut cause of underage and drug violations with people being taken to ambulances constantly. In fact just 2 NIGHTS earlier, the opening party for Club Black 4 people O.D’d and had to be taken to hospitals, this despite the “1 tab of E, 1 Joint you will be arrested signs”.
Whoever designed this club is an idiot, there was one way in, one way out. The way in was a tight squeeze with the bar on one side(the obviously wanted you to make sure you could pay $9 for an overpriced drink), and a wall. In this entryway people were jammed, unsafely, unbreathable. I felt like this could have been a Pearl Jam concert in Europe or a Limb Bizkit show in Australia where people have died from being crushed/suffocated to death. You could literally pick up your feet from the ground and move along with the crowd. This was cause the stage area was behind a setback, that you had to move about 50 feet forward to even see the stage Prince. Other venues like Roseland, Hammerstien, etc have multiple entrances and exits and once you walk in you are facing the stage from the back.. After holding onto my sister for dear life and preying people would observe the No Smoking rule, less the 2462 people (Fire code capacity) go up in smoke like a Great White concert.
After about 2 songs, somehow I was transported near the back of the club, and was able to hear and see him perform. Sight lines were terrible with pillars that held the balcony up, it didn’t appear to be any method of reaching the much less crowded balcony, so it was just grind and bear it. People were leaving, they obviously were not huge Prince fans and were probably fed up with waiting around for hours inside this fire trap death pit of a club.
While I understand the club/promoters probably wanted to make as much money as possible selling $80 tickets, This place was overcrowded, unsafe and designed very very poorly. Thankfully despite the pushing and shoving, people kept their wits about them and I didn’t see any fights, just lots of excuse me, I’m sorry, I cant do anything about my hand on your ass looks. It would have been nice that the sales were limited to a set number of tickets, not just selling how many they can put into the place.
The show, oh yeah the reason I put with up that crap, essentially the same as the House of Blues aftershow. I guess before I got in, they did and Instrumental, Musicology, I got to hear, Shh, DMSR, I Feel 4 U, Controversy, Beautiful Ones, Nothing Compares 2 U, Insatiable(nice touch, haven’t heard live in a while), Sign of the Times, Question of U, The One, ??Is it your breathe or mine improv(so much for thinking this was a spur of the moment thing in LA, the lyrics were the exact same thing), Lets Work, U got the Look, Life of the Party, Soulman, Kiss.. no encore, Prince must of realized the place was unsafe and the crowd was not really enjoying being jammed like sardines into a former drug den.
The sound was good, Celebs were in the house, including the ones he shouted out on stage, no guest performances, RAD has been fired.
Exiting the spot after the show was just as harrowing as entering it. Again one exit, 3 streams of people coming from all sides converging on one sliding glass door. How this club got a fire code for more than 100 people amazes me, much less the 2400+ people it was posted for. This reminds me of why I never goto typical “Nightclubs” in New York. If the lessons of the 22 people stampeded to death in Chicago at the former Slick Ricks nightclub, or the 100 people burnt up in Rhode Island teaches a lesson. Prince needs to visit the club before hand and have a better say in the setup/crowd control and security forces employed by the venues he plays at.

Was a bad club choice, no doubt. But yeah, they did let members in early. We got in line at 9;30 and at 10 they went down the line and told club members to go ahead. Amazingly, the crowd was cool about it and let us all by. We were 20 feet from the stage, but then of course we had to stand there until 1;30--why the hell cant he get on stage by midnight? Still, was pretty damn amazing. He was in amazing mood, really having fun, and very humble and sweet and just kickass. The whole segment of the show in the redl sleeveless number was amazing. Am I crazy or was that Call My Name?

Only problems--sound was so loud that vocals weren:t that clear, my ears are ringing, and and Candy shouldn:t sing EVER again.

Hmm. After reading your post, I find it hard to belive that you and I were actually at the same jam. I came out of it safe and sound and drenched with euphoric POSITIVITY. Sorry you had such a horrific experience all around. Maybe Madison Square Garden will make it up to you.

Peace,
Ropy

I should have stayed home save myself the $154. plus tolls, plus parking, plus drinks. Standing at 3 inches over 6ft and not having a comfortable viewing spot was just a let down. I missed the VH1 coverage of the Rock n Roll Hall of fame, to stand outside for 2 hours and then inside for 2 hours to see the shortest aftershow prince has ever given. With Chris Rock, Lenny, Alicia, Andre, Ms. Baker, Dave C all in the house and no one coming up to jam was also a let down. I thought this was a celebration afterparty? His guitar playing sounded the best, however the vocals (sound quality) was low. I would have paid twice as much for half the amount of people in the club. (way too Crowded).

i am so often amazed at the saltiness that prince fans exude. what did you expect from a small club gig? have you never read reports of previous after shows? they are small, tight, sweaty, uncomfortable...and FUN! perhaps you will be best left to the big arena shows or the theatres...leave the aftershows for those who can deal and appreciate them. i'm not trying to be nasty or anything but some of you are just ridiculous. i wanted to be there so bad with purplegypsy and have a great time. i know you can't always get what you want but you'd think those that do get those kind of opportunities would at least appreciate them.

yeah...prince fans get on my nerves too. some of y'all sound like little old ladies. next time, buy the dvd and save your money. stay at home so it won't be so crowded for those who WILL enjoy themselves.

Come on, SB. If I take me time to stand online for four hours and have someone show up and cut in front of me or push their way past me to get to the front of the stage, I shouldn't get pissed off? I expect people to act like adults.

PRINCE IS STUPID ENOUGH TO PLAY A SHOW IN AN UNSAFE CLUB, HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS TO THE FANS!

That's the thing Frankie, the same type of shit happened in Chicago last year, right before the Great White show. If something had happened, Prince would have been untouchable. I am sure he will never have anything to do with that venue again. Motherfuckers were taking tickets and reselling them! That had nothing to do with P.

while i agree with some of the assessments ... i have to add this :

who goes to a show ... scheduled for 11:59 or somethin .... and shows up at 12:00 expecting to get VIP treatment ... etc ....

no offense- i dont know u ... and i know that Prince is fashionably late alot ... but ... i also say that last time i saw him on the One Night Alone tour he was very punctional ... for Prince !

among friends and Prince fans , i kinda figured he would show up after 1 .... since it was an aftershow ...

our crowd showed up around 9:30 and waited in line ... we were kinda whisked in around 11:15 or so i would say ... i found it a surprisingly easy process- and i was standing .... til about 1:20 waiting about 5-6-7 rows back ....

the most frustrating thing for myself was "waiting" ... and dealing with people in line who are downright RUDE ... I know someone else stated this - but where is it written ... if u are 2nd back from the stage ... and u leave to go get a drink .. that u can get your spot back ... i dont undertand that ....

Wow. So sorry about all the bad feelings, but I had a great time.
The show as fun, and everyone aound me seemed having a great time too.
I bumped into a friend after the show, and he loved it as well.
Prince cannot be blamed personally for the criminal acts of the so-called "bouncers', or should I say worthless thugs, who re-sold tickets, and apparantly, accpeted $200 cash to let people in when they ran out of tickets. They badly oversold the venue.
And did anyone notice that creepy, little, twerpy owner-looking guy on stage before the show, surrounded by his two giant, fat henchman? I practically expected him to clutch his hands and start cackiling.

It's amazing how people can have such different experiences. I almost feel guilty for having a great time...almost. It really sucks to hear that people had such a bad time. I would look at the back of the club once in awhile and thank god I wasn't back there. I knew it would be like that and got there about 9:30 and was in by 10:15 thanks to the NPGMC. Sure, standing around for 3 hours wasn't great but I met a lot of cool people and they were playing some good music so it went by very fast. Membership definitely does have it's privileges at times.

I'm certainly not going to try and defend the club (Club Black) in anyway because it seems like they were out to screw people and make as much money as they could by letting anyone in. All of the money that they made by selling an already ripped ticket stub does not go to Prince. That's just money in the bouncers pocket. I'd love to know how many tickets were supposed to have been sold for this show. Some info I found on the nightclub said that it held 4000-5000 people. That seemed incredibly high once I saw the place. Maybe the promoters just took the clubs word on that and sold that many. We may never know.

I did notice that there were 3-4 large exit doors on the far wall (left of the stage) and there were other exits at each corner of the building. Small consolation for anyone in the middle of the crowd but it still looked like there were a lot of exits. It would have been nice of them to open some of those up when it was time to leave.

Eugnj420 is right about that twerpy guy. The one with the little pony-tail bun thing happening on the top of his head? I'm sure that thing is called something but thankfully I'm not cool enough to know it's name. He was standing just a couple feet in front of me and gave me the creeps.

Here's hoping that everyone that had a bad experience will have a much better time at the arena shows on the tour. Don't let this Club Black experience scare you away form them.

Actually, no! The guy you describe was a totally different creepy guy that I frogot about. No, the guy I saw was on stage wearing a black suit, flanked by his two stooges, and they were looking out on the crowd from the center of the stage.
Yeah, that place did have sleaze written all over it.

Man oh man, I see why after over 10 years in the online Prince game posting on all sorts of message boards, mailing lists, newsgroups etc that I no longer have the desire to post online. Everything turns into a flame war. Just a few points that might have been misunderstood from my message earlier this morning.
SassierBritches... Saltiness is not really a way to describe how I felt, It was just more right downright feeling unsafe. If you paid $80 per ticket, for you and family members you would want to make sure you would get home safely. If anything had happened in that club, a gunshot, smoke bomb, someone yelling fire, etc the results would have been disastrious, Great White incident would pale.
I have not only read reports of other aftershows but i've been to them. I flew from NYC to LA just for the after Grammy Jam at House of Blues cause i know that venue is an amazing place to see a concert, small intimate and well run. Club Black was anything but that, I wouldnt even consider this a small club show, the Fire Code capacity on the wall of the club was 2400 people, there was easily many many more than this. I actually dont like the big arena shows, where it seems like things are too rehearsed, I enjoy the aftershows where you can have special guests and Prince in the mood to try new songs. Some of my fondest memories of shows are aftershows that i've been in in Vegas, LA, Chicago, NY, etc.
I totally appreciated the music, but just not the whole surroundings of the club. Would I have done it again knowing what I i know now, probably not since it was the exact same show basically as the Houseof Blues show a month ago, without an encore.
MendesCity.... More power to you for standing in line from 9:30pm till the show started, You wanted to be up close and you got it. Myself after having spend literally DAYS if not WEEKS of my life standing and waiting for Prince was in no mood to be outside in the cold for hours or on my feet inside with people pushing and shoving past for drinks/bathroom etc for hours.
DaGodFather... I didnt expect any sort of VIP Treatment and i'm not sure where from my review you got that thought. True I showed up past midnight for a show listed on the ticket at 11:59pm, It was cause I knew it wasnt going to start on time and I was willing to take the risk to miss a few songs for rest and peace of mind. I guess the words "Club Life 1998" dont mean much to you, i tink people lined up for that show at 9pm and it started at 3am..

Whew.. Overall the performance was great, but just the factors of the club took away from the experience of the night. I wouldnt be so much as to say Prince doesnt give a bleep about his fans, as I feel he didnt do an encore of Purple Rain and America cause he realized the vibe of the club and that It wasnt working..

Man quit your whining, appreciate it for what it was. P doesnt have to do these shows, we get access to him more than any artist out there with these types of shows.
Dig if you will...

I just want to chime in to say that my experience was almost the exact replica of Ayan's. I even chuckled when I saw the word clusterfcuk, b/c that's the exact word I had used in an e-mail to a friend earlier.

First of all, I'm wildly thankful that Prince a) plays these kinds of shows, b) allows the average fan to easily gain access to such events, and c) tore the roof off the MF like usual last night.

I just don't understand why there couldn't have been an NPGMC line all night. I don't feel like that's VIP treatment, I feel like that's what I signed up for when I joined the NPGMC.

Those bouncers outside were the scum of the earth. Pimping for $200 bribes by taunting people who had pre-paid @ $85 a pop with threats they were going to miss the whole show if they didn't pay up was just complete B.S.

I love a "small, tight, sweaty, uncomfortable" show, and I'll take em over arena shows any day, but that place last night was just downright unsafe, especially in that front entryway once the floor was full.

I live to see Prince aftershows, but there's no way I'd go back to that money-grubbing firetrap.

oops! me and my posse were mesmerized; we were up front left of stage and it was
awesome! upbeat songs were explosive and the lighting made him appear supernatural; we found the club majical and huge; drinks were great with angelic bosoms during the pouring.

sound man unfortunately had his guitar sound too hot but fortunately on the upbeat songs this somehow was not a factor; for the so called important serious stuff his guitar was
unbearably hot reminiscent of James Gang at the Filmore East in the 60's (they opened for
Santanna).

So to make a long story short, we loved it and only wish Mr. P would stop just playing a rif
of Glamourous Girl and Love Bizarre and instead "Play it Again" Sam; or was that Prince.

Regards,

The Duck lol
