Don't care. Since he died, i care more about his integrity. Hate these crawlers out of the woodwork diluting that to be honest. Sonny and Tommy might be great musicians in their own right, but Tony M? Everyone is only interested in lining their pockets off the back of Prince. Done with it.

I feel where you're coming from but Prince put the kabosh on ppl performing his stuff. Thats why The Time and Family had to, at the very least, change their names etc. If Prince would have let ppl do what they got semi fame for, they probably undoubtedly would be doing what we see now: performing all kinds of places, ways, events, etc. And lets not rag on Tony M, it's dismissing of a human being just becuse ppl liked his contributions or not. Prince gave him a chance and he went for it. Who wouldn't? He shouldn't be continually disparaged.

Not the official NPG is why. And Tony M makes them scarily shit.Don't mind them sharing their stories of their time working with him, but living off his back, diluting his music just pisses me off.

Everyone is only interested in lining their pockets off the back of Prince.

Not disbuting what you said, not being argumentative, or trolling; but can one way to look at it from the musician's perspective is that they're not really trying to line their pockets off his back; but simply they are attempting to make a living and using what they are best known for? Could it be that maybe, yes, they only have fan interest because of Prince and later, with time, they will branch out and create their own music and identities? Just asking. It seems like whomever performs his music, it isn't the same and no way will they be able to do it as well as he did.

All of these people are performers--well, nearly all, Tony may have come out of retirement--who share their own history with Prince. If you desire not to attend their exhibitions, you need only walk the other way. Me, I'm not hating on them--they've got to work and keep their noteriety going the way that they can. I've actually already seen one all-star tribute show featuring 2 prominent NPG musicians in the gig and had a blast. If you're not ready to see that kind of thing, that's okay, too.

exacly that..they need to eat. Maybe performing now, being able to, gives them the opportunity to make a better living. Its called survival and people do what needs to be done to survive. I certainly hope nobody who is critical of any past band members performing do not listen to bootlegs because ..well because lol

lol

Tony M was a school teacher right before Prince died right?

idk about Tony lol didn't he get canned partially because Prince caught him with one of his women or something. They never spoke again since...

Wan't he GoldNi&&a?

.

Andre, I love Andre, but I will forever be nagged at his confession, that he never listened to another Prince album after he left the band... idk Andre

.

But I welcome the NPG doing songs from their time period. Hits Bsides regular album stuff obscure stuff.

Put a backing band up front, this is what you get I suppose. Backstage looked a bit low rent too. Pass.

I don’t know what you mean by official NPG. Prince used the NPG moniker until the end of his career (even if official albums weren’t labeled as Prince and the New Power Generation).

Well I know a couple people who saw them in London (and even got to meet some of the band members) and they said the show was great. What is it with all the curmudgeons here who just want to me miserable about everything. Sigh.

I hate all these tribute shows going around.
Associate bands/artists doing their own material plus the odd P song here and there is different on the other hand.

This NPG band should play NPG songs from the 90s.
There's plenty of great songs to chose from in this era.
i don't understand why they would play tunes like Uptown etc. When some of these band members were toddlers when that song was released.

They should make the show theirs. Not a P tribute. Is what I'm getting at.
Just like The Time and The Revolution do.

Meh... if we want to hear Prince songs performed live, I'd rather they be performed by people who worked with him. All these cats did. Nobody bitched in 1988 when Prince performed Head and the only band member who was there when it was recorded was Dr Fink.

Here’s a couple more. http://prince.org/msg/12/444334

Has anyone criticizing in this thread actually been to one of the shows? Or even if the shows were the best thing ever would they still be utter garbage theft? Would you criticize The Revolution too?

I saw the Revolution at BB Kings in New York in April, that was a great gig, really enjoyed it, but i'd been hoping to see the Revolution again for over 30 years, I flew to NY from England just to see them, they still played like a good tight band.

I also saw NPG last week at Nells in London, it was a good gig, but nowhere near as good as The Revolution, the lead vocals were pretty weak and the band felt abit disjointed to me.

At the end of the day, Prince is gone, but its still great to hear his music played live, so I'm happy these bands are playing, I think they only have a short Window of time to do this, they won't be playing in 5 years IMO.

I don't think anyone is exploiting Prince's music, none of them are going to get rich doing this. It's an individuals choice if they want to see these gigs, I can understand some fans not being able to enjoy it without Prince, but for me it's great music whoever plays it, and with no more Prince gigs, its the closest I can get to it.

I'm hoping The Revolution play Europe, I'll be going.

I would imagine The Revolution are probably a bit tighter and more cohesive since it’s the original band (with maybe a guest singer or something) playing music from a specific time period whereas the NPG is a wider range of musicians who may or may not have played with each other in the past. The Revolution was around for a few years; various incarnations of NPG lasted a couple decades.

Yep, thats pretty much what I thought, The Revolution toured and played regularly on albums for around 5 years as the same lineup, still surprised me after over 30 years they were so good together, they didn't appear rusty, but I think they put the time in rehearsing before hitting the road, the only thing missing for me was Eric Leeds.

The NPG surprised me by playing some songs not from their era, like the SOTT tracks, I expected they would be played when Sheila, Cat, Miko & Levi go on tour doing the 87-88 material !!!

I know somebody who saw them in Rotterdam (Boogieball), I see that somebody everytime I look into a mirror wink

It was bad... neutral

If they would have delivered such a performance when P was still alive, he'd kick their asses. Long, deep & constantly wink

I am sorry too hear this but anyone can watch the clips and see that they are awful. I wish they would just stop and hope to god they do not do any shows in the states.

I am very disappointed with Andre who should be promoting his own project rather then demolishing Prince's songs especially since he claims that not have paid any attention to what Prince was doing musically past 84 and he then dropped out of the music industry.

Something is not right about him and his behavior. Makes me think Prince cut ties with him for very serious reasons other than boyhood rivarly.

I was at the London show in Nells and one thing that struck me was how much the audience enjoyed it - maybe even needed it - some people queuing for hours beforehand, the Wizard of Oz chants, the "slow downs" during LRC... like we were trying to recreate the experience of going to a Prince concret (especially the 2014 shows)

Personally I felt a bit conflicted about the band - when they played NPG songs it was sort of great, especially given that Prince wasn't going to play (eg) SexyMF again anytime soon. Even Jughead was a kind of annoying friend it's quite nice to see turn up after so many years. But some of the solo, pure P stuff they played - Hot Thing, Sign of the Times.... It just felt a bit weird to me.

Just my personal opinion.... The particular folks involved are the early through mid 90s NPG band members. I would go to the show with that in mind. There was albums that were focused on them at that time. Something I don't understand & nobody seems to be addressing is the NPG side project material did have a lead singer, & a very good one. Sonny T is the lead for alot of material & from the footage I've seen this is not being utilized. Make it sound like the NPG, not a tribute band with special guests singers. Put Sonny on the mic. Secondly, do NPG era music... We loved it then & we love it now. They have access to mega hits.. D&P, cream, "7", most beautiful girl in the world. Also I understand that maybe they aren't gonna get the high end looking shows as the revolution because Prince's peak was during the revolution years.

Ya know if this was the nogmc a mod would chew me out for "Xpectations" but lol I'll say it anyways - If I had a magic wand this is how things would go down. The Show would open with songs mentioned above. Followed by songs that were made singles for NPG side projects that featured Sonny especially Count the days. Then round things out with other songs from the 90s. Lastly nobody would find anything wrong with wrapping things up with Purple Rain. Also I wish we could get Mayte.

& Yeah I'll defend them in the sense that there was material intended for them. And again the fact that they did have a lead singer with a good voice.
