There are an infinite number of ways that The Revolution going on tour and playing Prince songs barely a year after their leader’s death could have gone badly. The hole in the center of the stage and the sound could have been too big. His absence could have made it all feel too inappropriate or, worst of all, exploitative. Or, they simply might not have been up to the task, some 30 years after they’d last played together with him, of performing those complicated, difficult songs that they used to execute with the military precision of which he relentlessly demanded. It all could have been too sad.

But on Friday night at a densely packed B.B. King’s in Times Square, none of those things happened. The band was razor sharp, inspired, and knew exactly what the audience wanted: a concert that was a celebration, a reunion, a public mourning — and perhaps most of all, a release...

...Lisa announced a song that “You may not know or you may not” — and the group launched into a medley of two hitherto-unreleased and hard-to-find tracks from the forthcoming “Purple Rai...xe edition: “Our Destiny” seguing into “Roadhouse Garden.” (Not surprisingly, this was lost on more than a few audience members, but the woman standing next to us practically lost her mind.)...

... sure, everyone wished Prince were still here — none more than the people onstage. But since that can’t happen, joyous communal wakes like this one will do just fine.

Rightfully so, their show that I saw a few nights ago was probably one of the best shows I've been to in my life. Maybe it wasn't the most technically impressive, or the tightest display of musicianship, or the most visually entertaining, but in terms of good vibes and excellent music, I can't think of any shows that I seen that I've enjoyed as much as this one.

So excited for the Toronto show!

All hail The Revolution!

A friend of mine that lives in Maryland went to the gig in his area. He recorded the show (with a slight hiccup during the opening "Computer Blue"), and sent it to me. There's a video of "Computer Blue" that is online here and there. They blew it out of the water!

Edit: It was the Silver Springs, MD show. I've still not made it through the file yet.

I went to the show last night (4/29/17) in Philly. The lead singers were Brown Mark, Wendy, and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition. Stokley was singing on I would estimate about half of the songs. I posted more about the show on 4/29 here, including a set list: http://prince.org/msg/12/441731.

I would rather these people (including Sheila E, the Time, the Family etc) than people totally unrelated to the music. I'm going to a few shows.

I would rather go see them as opposed to some cover band look alike fakers.

All well deserved! Saw them at BB KINGS and my mind was blown from minute one till they left. The musicianship was beyond tight and it was FUNKY. But as Wendy said before they started, this is about U the audience, not who is singing this song or that song, we are your band!! and they were right, the audience was singing along on it all, but mostly it was Wendy and Brownmark and also Stokley Williams from MINT was there.

i never went to a prince show for his band i only went because of him and without him there is no magic in hearing his songs . as much as i like wendy and lisa solo i would never go see them live prince is the only artist i have spent my money on to see live other than janet jackson

June 22 in San Diego...can't get here fast enough!

I did, I went for the whole thing. Which is what Prince wanted. Band & Proteges. If he wanted it to just be about him, he would have put a curtain between him and the band.

Go check out a show, it was them up there with Prince rendering his musical vision. It is a celebration of the music.

Live a little.

I've seen a lot of different artists live.

i'm sure they are doing the material justice but none of them can sing lead I don't think.

Really?? Those are the only two artists you have ever seen live in concert?!

You are really limiting yourself.Yes,Prince was amazing but guess what? There are alot of talented artists and bands who put on incredible shows.Broaden your horizons!

That's interesting, considering how much magic the members of The Revolution did add to his songs.

I was also at the Philly performance this past Saturday with two other die-hard fans and we were all having a ball. One of my friends is a musician and he was impressed at how The Revolution threw down. Great, fun show. Lot's of energy. Had the right spirit. They toned it down at one point for a moving rendition of SISIA with Lisa and Wendy. It was an appropriate selection of songs. The band did justice to Prince's music like few others could.

I'm really happy they are getting such good reviews. It did feel a bit like a family reunion.

Well they brought in Stokely and he has an incredible voice and his is from Minneapolis. I love to see the actual musicians that played with him out there doing it.

They all continued to play music while Prince was alive and I doubt he would want them to not work as musicians.

The music will never die as long as it is being played.

who's stokely, have you been to a show yet laura? I'm thinking of going when they get here next month. People have differing opinions about it, what's new about that, i just want to hear good music. there used to be an Elvis show where his ex bandmembers from the seventies played live to a screen shot of elvis singing live, sure it's exploitive but i still wouldn't have minded seeing it.

Those guys were legendary musicians as well. I bet that'd be a good show. Apparently they just did something like this with Prince at the Celebration.

Saw them in DC on Thursday night and it was one of the best shows I've seen just from an emotional standpoint, the music, and the vibe of the crowd.

I love Prince much as anyone. I've obsessively followed his career well over 30 years. He's an electrifying live performer. But I've never cared the way he put his setlists together. Focusing mostly on the his, snippets of songs, medleys, long jams... I think his shows would have been so much better had he picked 25 songs, changed them up dramatically from night to night, emphasizing his latest album (which he usually ignored, at least in the latter days), and pulling some deep cuts.

That's what The Revolution did. They respected the songs. They were amazing. Seeing Wendy and Lisa on that stage alone performing Sometimes it Snows in April together, there was a void, the 3rd person in that triad. It was heartrending and beautiful.

But mostly it was a celebration, a fun, jam-session, a wild ride through some of their best recordings with Prince. Wendy wasn't always up to nailing Prince's solo's (who is?) but she did phenomenally well on When Doves Cry, as did the entire band. That was the high point for me in a night full of high points. It was amazing. Truly fantastic, and the vibe of the crowd was great.

i saw their first ave show online, it was pretty darn good. I loved the way they played the near-full version of little red corvette which i never saw Prince do.
