WTF?

I'm sure it was fun and all.. But I would have been so disappointed if i was there for 3 hours without seeing him play some guitar.

And i was hoping to see some new set-list for this upcoming tour confused

Well according to Jester, the fan (orger) who was treated to the experience by Prince and 3rdeyegirl, he mentions Prince not playing the guitar and Prince's response. Looks like Jester had the experience of a lifetime. smile

Thank you, those are some really nice reviews.

I think Prince is a wonderfull band leader.

During the Werchter concert in Belgium, he showed that he can make music with the rain, audiance and anything that has a sound.

So, I can imagine that he made the audiance crazy with leading all these great musicians.

However, what's up with the late arrival? People really waited for 2.5 hours, after they finally got in? eek

And I always assumed that there never been a day that Prince did not play guitar.

I'm curious after what happened. I mean, Prince not playing guitar??????

Something must have not went as planned. Also, because of Questlove saying:

“Do you know what I’m doing?” he asked the crowd as he toweled off the stage. “I’m cleaning up for Prince. I would never do this for anybody else.”

Well, it's good that everything came together in the end, and Prince proved to be able to put on a show, even without his extra limb, the guitar.

That proves he's a good musician and a performer. It seems he had to make some last minute adjustements and he managed to make it work.

Reading the reviews, he was worth the money, because Prince delivered Samsung the most discussed party at the festival.

And I really like Prince his touch; "competing with Justin Timberlake at the MySpace party several blocks away." Poor Justin, he lost the game.

I didn't know James Brown's song "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open Up the Door, I'll Get It Myself), but I do know it now. And I love it!

I'm sorry I've missed it. But nice to read about it, though.

The postive reviews give me a smile on my face...

And to some of the overly obsessive folks that go through set lists with a flashlight in the dead of night...U need to understand that most of the people there at the SXSW show have never seen Prince live in concert...

Remember guys...Just because we've seen P 20 plus time onstage doesn't mean the rest of the world knows that he did a similar set in Europe...

In other words, fall back and let the rest of the world enjoy dude's work..

A Tribe Called Quest and Prince Shut Down SXSW

A Tribe Called Quest and Prince Shut Down SXSWPhotographs by John Sciulli for Samsung

A Tribe Called Quest and Prince closed out SXSW 2013 with authority last night at La Zona Rosa in Austin, Texas. The concert, sponsored by Samsung Galaxy, may have been titled #TheNextBigThing, but by the time these two veteran acts were finished tearing down the stage, one fact was abundantly clear: there is no simply substitute for experience and musical expertise.

Long lines formed hours ahead of showtime and wristband seekers flooded the streets in hopes of catching Prince's first-ever SXSW appearance. Samsung Galaxy users had a chance to win passes to go see the show along with VIPs like Nick Cannon, Solange Knowles, Dennis Quaid, Jesse Williams, Talib Kweli, Jim James, Mayer Hawthorne, and Isaiah Washington.

Tribe kicked it off (yes, they can) flexing their original four-man lineup including Jarobi, Phife, and Q-Tip on microphones and Ali Shaheed Muhammad in his familiar spot on the wheels of steel. Not only were the group's rhymes and routines as on point as ever—Jarobi knew all the words, even to songs he didn't appear on—but the group's personal chemistry appeared to be crackling once again, making this set of classics feel like much more than a sponsor money-grab. "They called us at the last minute," Tip remarked between songs. "I was chipping golf balls." Phife said he was "Jerkin' it." Tip later joked that "we should break up again for the third time." After they wrapped things up with "Award Tour," dreams of a Tribe reunion project were rekindled in the minds of many.

After a brief intermission Prince Rogers Nelson and his 22-piece band took the stage for a nonstop onslaught of funk and soul that flowed seamlessly from one jam to the next like a deluxe pleasure cruise. Ports of call along the way included "1999," "Purple Rain," and "Something in the Water" as well as a funked-up cover of Tevin Campbell's "Shhh."

For the first of his six (!!!!!!) encores, the 54-year-old living legend selected Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough." But even five encores later, nobody in the place actually did get enough—sure was fun trying though.

So all he did was the same setlist from the chicago show, instead having Hannah on percussion and Donna as second guitarist. He's wasting an oppotunity with this two new bands thing, he should be touring little clubs with 3rdeyegirl playing all his rock stuff and new material, and doing bigger concerts with a new more hits based setlist (but different hits) with the RBJ/Andrew Gouche lineup. Geez Prince way to bore your fans into a coma...

Yes, but that might be what some fans would like him to do, but may not be his plan. If earlier reports said he had a 22 piece band, how'd did you expect him to just use the 3rdeyegirl members? I read tweets that Hannah did play on some songs at that festival, and Prince never made an announcement that the 2 new band members (Donna and Hannah) added to his NPG family, were going to be his only, official band members with Ida already included, to use in the future. Nor was there ever an official announcement that he got rid of his recent NPG band members that he's toured with for the past 2 years plus.

It seems obvious he's using specific band members for songs/sounds he wants to present and shows he performs at. Maybe rock isn't all he wants to limit himself to, but just make it inclusive with the other forms of music he obviously embraces. Nothing wrong with that. A little bit of everything for everybody, not just for one, two or a handful of his worldwide fanbase.

[Edited 3/17/13 6:31am]

Don't get me wrong i agree with everything you said smile I just thought that the hype about this all female rock band was building to something, like their appearance on that tv show the other week. I think sometimes Prince does play it easy, with the ONA tour no one was moaning that he had a 3 piece jazz band and was playing all new material, so i think the whole "people were there to hear the hits" thing is a cop-out sometimes. Either way any Prince show is a great amazing experience like no other, but i thi nk its time for him to take the plunge and tour with this 3rdeyegirl band and get back to tiny sweaty clubs tearing shit up on the guitar! wink

yeahthat

I'm sorry to have seen a few Prince concerts. Fortunately, Prince can keep it interesting for most of us, even when it are the same songs every time.

I like how he feels he wants to serve in stead of please. It's a different nuance that makes him radiant on stage.

SXSW: The amazing, never-ending Prince show -- a moment-by-moment report

You know that old Texas saying, “Keep Austin weird“? Well, Prince helped that cause on Saturday night, when he took his massive band to Austin’s La Zona Rosa for the Samsung Galaxy showcase, where they wore animal caps, dabbed their faces with pink handkerchiefs, and capped off a long week of SXSW mania. Fans were so excited about the show that they arrived at the venue at 9:00 p.m. and waited for two full hours before anyone took the stage. (A Tribe Called Quest opened, and they were excellent.) Then they waited another half hour while Prince set up. At which point they were treated to two and a half hours of crazy fun. So what happened? Below is a moment-by-moment recap of what must’ve been a thrilling/exhausting night for His Purple Majesty. (The guy is 54 years old, and he still has way more energy than men half his age!) Here’s how it all went down.

Pitchfork

SXSW: Prince

Saturday 12:20 a.m. @ Samsung Galaxy event at La Zona Rosa

Photo via Questlove's Instagram account. For all of our 2013 SXSW coverage, head here.

In R. Kelly's autobiography Soulacoaster, he described the surreal feeling of seeing Michael Jackson in person for the first time. He'd grown up with Michael as a character in the "Jackson 5ive" cartoon, and seeing him in the flesh was akin to hanging out with Mickey Mouse. While I was waiting in La Zona Rosa for the Prince show to start, I kept thinking about the depictions of Prince I've been familiar with for the majority of my life. I thought of the Prince riding a unicorn in the nude on the back cover of his first album. I thought of the Kid from Purple Rain challenging Apollonia to purify herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

But then he walked on stage with his jewel-encrusted pimp cane, magenta shirt, perfect hair, and knowing smirk. There he was, standing mere feet away, posing, getting ready to embark on a lengthy funk odyssey. To borrow a phrase from Kells, Prince was real.

With that Samsung money behind him, the Purple One pulled out all the stops and stuffed an elaborate arena show into La Zona Rosa, a medium-sized venue where the artist isn't that far removed from the audience and the ceilings aren't all that high. After a ridiculously fun opening set from A Tribe Called Quest, Prince's giant band (including his ripping new backing trio 3rd Eye Girl) came on. He packed an elaborate light show, disco balls, back-up dancers, choreography, and an entire horn section wearing strange animal hats onto that (relatively) tiny stage.

He sealed the deal when 20 horns blasted out the intro to "1999". Prince danced, let his musicians take their solos and have their moment in the spotlight, duetted with a member of his band, and right at the song's climax, boom-- confetti and streamers dropped from the ceiling. And of course, during "Purple Rain", the entire crowd sang along. (Yes, I welled up a little).

Ultimately, he played six encores, which included awesome covers of such songs as Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately", Curtis Mayfield's "We're a Winner", and best of all, the Time's "Jungle Love". He did the James Brown "hit me" act, he spun, he brought people on stage to dance-- it was incredible.

He kept saying "goodbye Austin," but he'd always come back: "Don't make me hurt you-- you know how many hits I got!" At 2:40 a.m., somebody at La Zona Rosa informed Prince and company that they only had 20 minutes left. He sounded pissed about this: "20 minutes?!" It was an unbelievable way to cap SXSW.

Well, I can't judge a show that I haven't been to, but it's funny how he gets rave reviews while the die hard fans complain. But it looks like he's about to continue on his big band Greatest Hits & Covers Revue and after saying 2013 is going to be big!that's a bit of a letdown. As much as I love JB and 'Retha and Curtis, any cover band in a bar can play that. Who really goes to a Prince concert for that? If future tours are going to be like this, I'm afraid I'm going to give them a miss...

Yes, but like orger 'murph' said, there are many fans who have never seen him perform before. The hardcore/longtime fan base, often come to the shows with too many expectations, thereby creating their own disappointments. I think it's cool he's using various band members during his shows, if that is what the plan is for the future. Also, as far as shows at smaller venues, there's really no limit to which band members he could use for those smallerr venues, just like what he did for the Dakota shows by using different band members on different nights. I think some of his fans need to be patient and just wait and see what he has in store for his upcoming April tour, as well as, some of the shows he's scheduled to do abroad.

Not every band can play JB, 'Retha or Curtis' that well All 3 of those artists' music have made an impact on many musicians/artists, even Prince. You can hear those influences in Prince's music and see it in his performance styles. Today's music industry gives us manufactured artists who actually try to borrow from those same 3 artists, you've mentioned, but only a 'handful' will reach any of those 3 artists' legendary status. Prince comes from the days of 'real music' and apparently the covers he does, proves it. So why not share ithat gold with those who have not experienced what real music sounds like, instead of the manufactured bs that the music industry is assing of as 'real music and talent?' Just my two cents.

I'm glad Jester got picked to go to the concert. He seems like a really positive person, who enjoyed the experience.

From reading some of the comments here, I wonder if some people go to concerts (or read reviews of concerts) with the attitude that "If Prince doesn't play my personal wishlist of songs, or if he plays a setlist I've heard before, the show must have been awful".

I can't understand that attitude. Why not just go with the flow and enjoy the songs he plays? The man is an amazing live performer. I mean, I get people complaining when shows have had major sound problems or have been too short, but not just because they disagree with the set list.

Here's hoping Prince tours soon and plays whatever songs he wants, as long as they're banging!

U would make a great lawyer....lol But on the real...some of the criticism is fascinating. U just don't see it with other artists... Usually fans dissect the actual performance....Was the artist lackluster? Did he or she bring it? Were they in good shape voice wise? Did they go beyond playing their songs as heard on the record---or did they stretch them out and went left? But you don't hear fans complaining that an act did the exact same show (even though they didn't) at some gig in Germany...lol I mean, Prince fans are a special lot....Forget criticizing the ACTUAL gig... We have to find some other stuff to complain about...Ha!

I'm no sheep...If Prince gives a sucky ass show, it should be said...

But I don't have to find new beefs to criticize a show that I didn't even go to...lol

You got it, Murph.

I've always found it fascinating that generally, the people who WEREN'T there criticize everything about the show.

And for some reason they think that means more than the praise from the people who WERE there!

Prince going the route of Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton and Rod Stewart with the cover route. COOL!! It works for them so why not. His music is blah now and instead of playing the same 12 songs every night why not just do covers now. Lets face it thats what works for the old guys so hopefully Prince will continue this. Not playing guitar probably saves some energy too. As long as he has Donna there is no reason really for him to play. She can hold it down as she rocks!! Glad to hear the show was great!!

PSSST! I think Prince did the splits last night during "cool". Local MPLS news has video footage.

V10LETBLUES

From all the clips I have listened to I have to say I have not heard his band as great as this in the longest time. The HORNS! Jesus. The horn arrangements are incredible. Case in point Extraloveable. The band just oozes ENERGY! The drums are hardcore, they have energy, they snap, crackle and pop. The keyboards are extra sharp, they're just badass. It would be outstanding if he recorded an album with this band and this vibe. Simply amazing.
