Spoke with a photographer at the show. I asked him if Nikka Costa showed up for the first performance, and he looked at me like I had three heads. He said, no, "Esperanza Spalding was on stage, and Prince played with her." And, sure enough, I saw Esperanza milling with the VIP's outside. Didn't make it into the show, but there was some good people watching on the sidewalk... including Kim Kardashian. Oh, and Dr. Funkenberry.

I knew it wasn't Nikka unless she was wearing a wig

I thought it was Esperanza Spalding because of her build and hair. Her voice threw me off because she didn't vocalize as much last night like she did over the weekend... Pristine

Well, Nikka and Esperanza don't look anything alike at all. lol But Andy and Esperanza could have got confused for one another. Anyway, it seems judging from what some are now saying, it seems it was Esperanza after all, just wondering why someone in post #48 stated Andy Allo was the singer. Guess they were mistaken after all.

It was 100% not Nikka Costa (which would have been mindblowing too). It was definitely, 100% Andy Allo. Not Esperanza Spalding. Prince even said her name.

Agreed! It was Andy and Prince said her name! She sang in the second show. That's the one I attended, but seems like she appeared in both shows. Seems the photog. was confused too! Those two (Andy and Esperanza) could pass for twins!

I second that confirmation. Andy performed in the first set which I saw. I sat next to her at a previous Prince show (when Esperanza opened). And YES, Prince did say her name after the song ended.

I attended the Midnight show, utterly amazing and off the hook. Bering in such an intimate setting was nice and to hear songs like "Bambi", Bob Marley Jams, "Peach", etc was quite nice. Shelby J sang her ass off. All around a great show.

True, because of their afros and complexion, and their voices sound somewhat alike. Someone needs to correct that setlist and take Nikka Costa's name off of it.

This is the artist Andy Allo I posted about back in August in the non-Prince music forum, that I saw perform on one of the Africa channel's music programs:

watching him throughly enjoy the band jamming was a highlight. he had his back turned to the crowd for alot of the night for the 7pm show. we could see his face beaming and smiling as he was facing his band. he was amazed at the sexyness and funkyness just as much as the crowd.

i forgot which song this was during but he walked up the stairs on the right hand side to get to the loft and enjoyed the show as if he was one of us.

surprised i didn't see alot of cell phone flashes. i didn't wanna bust mine out in case they escorted people out. he gave a few glares and put his hand up to a few people so i think he saw some folks trying to take pix. props out to the brave folks who got pix!

i heard the annoying piano man screamer lady unleashing on the poor dude. i wasn't even that close to them. her screechy bitchyness just came out of nowhere and she looked like she wanted to fight. calm your ass down lady, this is a prince show. no respect!

at one point in the show, he was looking in the middle of the pit and asked for security. i couldn't see what the hell was going on. anyone see what was happening?

so hilarious to hear some lady scream out "take your time" when he seemed to forget the words to his new song.

I made the mistake at an after party once NOT to look him in the eye. He was watching me, even took of his sunglasses, and I got shy and looked the other way. Can you believe that? lol

I forget which comedian first did that joke: "Don't look him in the eyes, he might turn you out..." LOL

Being that close to him was something else. Wish I could have made it through the second set as well but my entire body was aching. This residency has been...wow.

During Musicology, Prince looked out and happened to catch someone taking his photo so he put his hand up to try to block the shot and called for security.

I was right beside the woman, and she - along with another woman on the other side of me moments earlier - were escorted away. Quickly.

Seriously, DO NOT pull out a camera phone at an intimate Prince show (as much as you want to - and I sure as hell do too). They are beyond militaristic. But not complaining at all - it was more amusing than anything else. If anything, seeing people getting pulled away, and then getting to move 3 feet from the stage rather than 8... it was great! smile

Thank you to everyone for the reviews and updates. It sounds like a great intimate show, the kind that I would like to attend, if ever the opportunity presents itself.

I keep itching to buy a plane ticket to LA, then my bank account yells "DON'T DO IT"!!..lol

Atleast I can experience the shows through you guys..thanks again!

not sure how esperanza was mentioned. i've only seen her at a few shows at the hollywood bowl, but i knew it wasn't her right away b/c she wasn't playing bass. smile

had never heard of any allo before last night. she was good, but would have preferred esperanza, of course. would love to have seen a simultaneous bass duel with guitar/horn or guitar keyboard duel. smile

no complaints though. smile

That second setlist sounds awesome. I would love for Prince to combine the best parts of both Troubadour lists for a Forum show...take a chance, drop some songs that might benefit from a rest. I should have stayed 4 the second show but I was literally exhausted and didn't think I could make it through until 3am on my feet. Give me "I Like It There" & "Bambi," throw in "I'm Yours" and I want to hear that interpolation again of "le Freak" with "Sexy Dancer" & have the girls sing the chorus of "I Want Your Love" and I can die happy. Would it be too much to get a piece of "I Hate U" to round it off? Yeah, probably so...

I was right there next to you too...on either side of me were two, maybe three women who were using their cameras. I told people in line waiting for the 11pm show to NOT use their phones because I saw with my own eyes how draconian was the venue security. They straight pushed through the crowd and demanded for the person to either step out or they asked people around who was doing it. At least one of the women was escorted out; not sure of the other one. The one closest to me, the guy demanded to see the pics she took and forced her to delete them on the spot. While the show is going on less than ten feet from P and the stage. Prince actually stopped singing when he noticed it...gave one of "those" looks, shsking his head, pointed in the direction and said "Security..." But not like during a Forum show when he's playing with the VIPs. No, he MEANT that shit. I was so close to him and would have loved to get some close up photos for my girlfriend but no, didn't want to risk it and it may sound corny but I didn't want to do it. Prince has made it clear, he's asking us to respect his wishes and I feel like OK Prince, thanks for allowing me to enjoy all of this goodness; I'll respect your wishes.

Just a lil addition for the late show. Prince jumped on the keyboard and did a solo during Stratus. It was funny he was trying to lead the band and I think it was Blackwell who wasn't paying attention and missed a change, Prince shot him (or her, could have been Ida or even Renatto on the other side of the stage) a hard look and made the 2 finger gesture to his eyes saying "watch ME"

"Watch me for the changes...and try and keep up" : >)
