The Beautiful Ones

This has probably been mentioned before but I make no apologies to eulogise about it one more time smile

It was my second Prince show on the Glorious 6th and the set list was unbelievable. It started with Lets Go Crazy followed by 1999 and then straight into Take Me With U. I nearly came in my pants. This couldn't get any better ! But then halfway during the show the lights went light low and I could just make out Prince walking over to the Piano and he started to tinkle the ivories and began with The Morning Papers (brilliant) and then straight into Diamonds and Pearls.

Then it happened. It was the kind of feeling you get when you ask a girl that you've fancied for ages for a date and she says "yes !". The notes rang out and it took a short while for my brain to register what the tune was - OMG its the Beautfiul Ones I yelled. Sadly the couple next to me who had their arms crossed all night (heathens !) took no notice. Then with the opening line "Baby, baby, baby, whats it gonna be ?" my heart leaped and the small hairs on the back of my neck stood up. It was the most perfect performance of that song that I think I've ever heard and it was in full not just one or two lines. By the time Prince reached the climax he was full of passion, screaming, kicking back the stool - he put his heart and soul into that song. Its been said many a time before but I'll say it again - what a vocal range he has - he filled the O2 with such passion and power in his voice that the final crescendo of the song shooked the place. It is something I'll always remember.

For me it was the standout performance in a show that was studded with shimmering gems on that night. It was the Masterpiece in his Collection. It was the Jewel in his Purple Crown !!

I think I need to sit down for a bit.

Did that performance do the same for anyone else or is it just me ?

Hi! Great description, I could just imagine being there! Just wondering, comparing it with the movie version, was it better than the performance in Purple Rain? In my mind I think nothing could touch that one...hope he comes back to the states though so I can catch a concert! smile

Hi wildgoldenhoney, the movie version is basically a lipsynch to the album version a brilliant visual performance I hasten to add. The live version at the O2 was something special. It wasn't so visual but more from the heart you couldn't keep your eyes away. It was mesmerising and captivating.

I'll orgnote you to 'describe' what I mean !!

Cheerio smile

i cant believe i had the luck of going to the 6th main show and hearing him sing this!

having been to 2 main shows prior and no beautiful ones yet, wasnt looking hopeful, but boy when the first few notes rang round the stadium i nearly wet myself! boy did he blow me away!!!

the sheer emotion and intensity of this performance was clearly visible for all to see - prince was off his stool and practically on the floor by the end of it - AND HE SANG THE FULL SONG. WOW!!!!

i went to 4 main shows (inc the last) and this was THE highlight of them all - this will stay in my mind 4eva and just makes me feel thankful 4 having the chance to see a musical genius in his element
