In one Aftershow (Sept 13th? I think) Prince made a point of walking over to Josh, because he was so impressed with him, and do that thing that they do to each other when someone plays a flaming solo, like waving out fire... Then he turned round to us and pointed at Josh and mouthed "Oh my God!" or something like that.

I agree the sound at both O2 and Indigo was not showcasing anyone terribly favourably specially Josh; but Prince certainly thought his bass player was the bee's knees.

Prince also played the drums (and a tiny moment of congas) when he played with Grupo Fantasma on Aug 7 at the Aftershow, that was pretty cool.

But the best for me were the extended solos for Guitar and Whole Lotta Love in the main shows and his guitar playing at the Aftershow Aug 28. I've completely rediscovered how brilliant an instrument the guitar really is during this summer thanks to Prince.

Favourite instrument?

Princes voice singing 'Sometimes it snows in April' - Ahhhh biggrin

And otherwise the bass - the bass player did a fantastic groovy job all tour through!

I think I remember that moment. Prince walked over to Josh whilst Greg was at the front of the stage doing a solo. He did the waving out smoke gesture behind Greg then suddenly noticed Greg's shoes, pointed at them and mouthed OMG towards the crowd. Both Prince & Josh then laughed at Greg's shoes as they were slightly OTT (sort of snakeskin style). He might have done a similar thing at an other point of the aftershow though... I really like it when they're all having fun on stage.

I was devastated when I found out. I had started to really fancy the thought of Prince playing those spoons. wink
Though seriously, wouldn't they fit in a song like ATWIAD or Tamborine? That's excellent aftershow potential, no?

From Cora’s stone cold drum to Renato’s mellow piano without forgetting the smooth brass section, Josh’s bass, Morris’s (and Prince’s) keyboards, quite an imposing selection of instruments were played during the Earth Tour.

As always, Prince himself used a diversity of guitars. Whether it is the Cloud guitars (TBC), the Symbol guitar, the Hohner Tele, and his new baby Blue Strat, they are all unique and have their own distinct looks and sounds.

My personal favourite is the Hohner Tele “The Prinz” (the one with the leopard print). I think it produces some of the best of Prince’s sounds from old school funk to warm blues and even jazz.
I love the sound of that guitar so much that one day I think I will have to buy one and learn how to play it myself!

All these instruments were of course complementing each other and worked well as a whole, but which one would you say has really hit your spot this summer?

Does anybody know whether or not Prince has played any of his cloud guitars this summer?
[Edited 9/28/07 16:20pm]

By the way, the hohner tele he uses is not "The Prinz" model. They were a cheap knock off version of the guitar he made famous. They are reported to sound very poor aswell.

& good luck in tracking one down & buying it! The only one similar to go up for sale on ebay recently was made by a different company & sold for $5000.

Ah, ok, thanks for the info. Just to make sure I understand this correctly, you are saying that the "Prinz" model is a cheap knock off version of the Hohner, right? And which type was the one on e-bay? Hohner or "Prinz"? Sorry if I sound confused, but I'm obviously not an expert at all. All I've ever played is just a classical spanish guitar. I'm now actually thinking of getting an Ibanez GB (but that's probably even harder to find! confused ).

There is a Hohner reissue of the Prinz tele. It's called the artist but has a different headstock. Presumably as it's a bolt on neck that could be changed. Retail is £999 but the spec is very decent. I've put a deposit down on one and have not slept since! Apparently delivery is now mid Nov.

Cheers!

I can't remember the name of Prince's original hohner. The Prinz version was released in the mid 80's after they realised that Prince had raised it's profiule but he refused to endorse it, hense the different soelling (Prinz n not Prince). This model was substandard to the original & looked lightly different. They then reissued this model in the early 90's with a model called the "TE Prinz". This was even worse than the previous model.
The original Hohner (that Prince uses) was a exact replica of a design by a japanese company in the 70's. Hohner simply licenced the design & added theor name 2 the headstock instead of the original japanese companies name. It was one of these japanese versions that sold 4 $5000 on ebay recently, so it wasn;t even the exact model that Prince played, but techincally the same.
I am sure somebody can pick me up on a couple of finer points on this as I found this stuff out a while ago.
As much as I would absolutely love to own this guitar, I find it highly unlikely. But something with a similar "raggedy" tone would do fine. If anybody can make any recommendations, please let me know!!!

I have one of the 80s hohners...and as you say, it isn't the same....i don't even know if it was made in Japan!

having said that, i think these earlier reissues are good....though there are people who disagree

mine cost £450, and it had emgs fitted, schaller tuners, and a new nut, and a case...i'd estimate about £200 of upgrade...and i've played it alot, so i'm chuffed

I saw one on ebay about 6 years ago, identical to princes(alabone hohner inlay) with a BIN of $999 i thought it was overpriced at the time....now i really regret not getting it!

the new hohner re issue is i believe £999...it looks pretty good, but that seems like too much in my opinion.

i'd be interested to know how many prince has...from the pictures i've seen, he definately has at least 3 different ones...he nearly always seems to use just the one though

i've seen a couple of pics of him with one with a tortoise shell scratchplate, rather than the leopard skin, which makes me wonder if he has one of the copies himself!

He did that on August 17th, on a light Blue Jazz bass I believe.

I was just thinking about this the other day ... near the end of Live At The Aladdin, he burried the cloud guitar (albeit under a sweaty handkerchief). I didn't think much about it when the DVD was first out, but on watching again, I can't remember seeing the Cloud guitar since then. Was this his symbolically retiring the instrument, or has he played it since?
