I am guessing that the guy looses a stick or two as he is moving them around so quick.

I heard it was because the stages were smaller than usual and the brass section and bass were so near to the drumkit, it was to stop sound distortion between the instruments. | |

Yup, usually used to shield the Umphh of the drums from other mikes so that you only get the sound through the drum microphones...
