Aftershow 28.08

OMG, OMG, the aftershow tonight, the aftershow tonight. *shakes head* I cannot begin to tell you... He. ROCKED. No words for how much. Very late start 2nite (again), he came on at 1.15am. But he was there from the first minute to the last, a full hour and a half. We knew he was coming because his guitar-sound-adjuster thing was brought out (the semi-circular thing that lies in front of him on the ground). And then the mic. Both right at the edge of the stage. I really feel he wants to make himself available, accessible when he plays to/with/for us. I was in the 2nd row, he was like *right there*. Unbelievable. The curtains were closed but once we caught a glimpse of him when someone brought something out. Huge screams and cheers, the crowd was great. Then the familiar guitar started - but the curtains stayed closed for several minutes. Felt like forever - he's such a tease! When the curtains finally opened he was standing there with his back to us, just with Cora and the bass player (darn, what's his name again??). And then launched into an awesome version of Anotherloverholeinyohead. The crowd went wild and afterwards he said, "thank u, good night" and made like he was walking off! But we all knew that was a joke, because both we and him and the band were all too hyped up to leave it there! He then rocked, played the guitar and sang his butt off. He played real rock'n'roll like All Shook Up (!) - real funky though - and other old rock 'n' roll numbers. Also, Alphabet Street and other of his stuff but so rock and heavy, often more rock than funk that they were really very different from the album versions. He played amazing solos, his guitar is out of this world now. I had a semi-religious experience, not kidding ya! I thought I never heard anything like it; he plays straight to my eternal soul.

Shelby came out for one song, Baby Love, as usual she was unbelievable, she rocks so bad, we all screamed like there was no tomorrow, P really appreciated it. After her number he said, "What a show, eh?".

He left and came back for one encore - made my night perfect by playing something from the new album just as I wished after the main show: Guitar. Pretty faithful to the album version, but LOADS of energy. To my shame this was the only one I knew ALL the words to, so I sang my heart out and got a wonderful smile at the end. He clocks everything.

If someone has a setlist that would be much appreciated. And if anyone has, err, more than a mental record, if u get my drift, something more like an electronic memory... i'd love u forever.

Something funny happened with the lyric cue tonight. Instead of an electronic one there was a lady today (quite an official looking one, too, she didn't really looked that funky) who stood right in front of stage, next to a huge box full of A3 laminates, all with the lycrics of what could have been 150 songs (it was a big box!) the print was very large. Many songs ran over several A3 pages. She had to hold them up in front of Prince and turn over the pages... very funny, the manual version of an electronic monitor! I didn't really see him use the cues but it's hard to tell. Also, i wonder how she knew the songs, if she was musically very well versed and had an ingenious filing system... More likely she knew the set list.

She's been around for about a year now, "manning" the lyric sheets.

Amazing show and simply no words to describe just how much that show meant to me...It's 4am here, so please forgive me if I miss something from the setlist:

Thank you for talkin' to me Africa
Anotherloverholenyohead
Calhoun Square
Chaos and disorder
I like it there
All shook up
Empty Room
Sexuality (renamed Spirituality)
Johnny B Goode
Elephants and flowers
When will we b paid?
Baby love (Shelby on vocals)
Alphabet St.
Guitar

Seeing the above songs live with just Prince, Cora and Josh on stage is a memory I will never lose. Prince really worked the guitar and loved every moment. His vocal performance was unbelievable too. worship

OMG - thats exactly how I feel too! I feel sooooo very privileged to have been at tonights aftershow. I love the rocky guitars, it's my favourite. I love it that the aftershows have been so different from each other, different styles, makes it so special and exciting - you never know what you're going to hear.

I never thought I'd hear Elephants and Flowers live, it was fantastic. And the super rocky version of anotherloverholeinyohead - all I can say is WOW!

Another great memory made tonight, I'll cherish it forever.

I'm so glad you guys were there too and are equally funked out of your head!
*shakes head some more in disbelief* What a night!

Josh, yes, that's his name, right, thanks!

Oh, ok that Lady of the Lyrics is a fixture then. I had seen an electronic monitor at a previous aftershow. Also, I had never been quite that close to the stage, never spotted her before.

And the set list, you are a star!

Very true, each night is totally unique; each night he comes on is a precious gem. I will treasure this memory. From the heart, thank you Prince.

I have to agree. Extraordinary. The main show was fantastic by itself, and I thought if he plays at the aftershow it's going to be good. Can't believe just how good it was. Prince with drums and bass. Nothing more. That guitar...out of this world. Was starting to wonder if he was going to turn up (especially after convincing two friends to go), but when he did blew me away. Really. I've been to show/aftershow on 1/8 and 14/8 and thought they were good, and by good I mean top notch. Not even close compared to tonight.

Wow. Going to bed a very happy man.

Sounds like it was an excellent aftershow.

I would love to hear When Will We Be Paid? live, that would have been great.

Great that you all enjoyed the Aftershow so much - my friend and myself were at the one on Saturday 18th August and it was awesome - makes all the other problems about seating and tickets seem less important. biggrin

At one point Prince handed his guitar into the audience! It was one of those OMG moments, he held it out and I thought he wanted to let people touch it but then he actually let go of it. People just held it up there, no-one was trying to pull it down, I think. It was a bit like an alter-ego stage dive - the guitar instead of himself! (although it didn't get passed down into audience). Then his guy who looks after the guitar (what's his name?) came running and snatched it back..

At one point Prince did actually make like he was going to stage dive into the crowd himself but then didn't. while singing he was looking and pointing to someone on the left (viewed from in front of the stage) quite a bit. Does anyone know if this was just a cute lady/die-hard fan in a great outfit or dancing/singing very hard? Or if this was someone like a fellow musician or what?

Wow, that's all I can say... was my first main show (which had ALL the songs I wanted to hear, including When doves cry!!!) and first aftershow (never been able to catch him live), and it was just unbelievable.... Queued up early and got to the second row just a bit left of him... I'm not going to recount what everyone else has said, but what really showed me that he must also have enjoyed the night is that he came back after having "officially" ended the aftershow... At least I read it this way: he hit the last chord of Alphabet Street and then let it fade out while he handed the Guitar to the audience and left... but then the whole place started chanting "ooeeeeeooo .....OOOOOoooo" all the time, and again and again and again... Took nearly 10 mins until first Josh appeared backstage, then Cora, and then the man himself... Guitar was a great ending to a night out of this world!!! Had my girlfriend with me, and getting her to the main show was a tough sell, but she enjoyed it a lot, so.. again.. WHAT-A-NIGHT!!!! Seriously hope the aftershow get's a CD-release, I REALLY NEED IT!!!

How come going back to work seems so ridiculously pointless today? All I want to do is go back to the O² and dance the whole night... I wish the whole life was an aftershow biggrin biggrin biggrin

Totally agree with all the above, Fantastic night; Main show & after show. Only slightly marred by the rude/ stupid/ drunken twats who stand propping up the bar until Prince comes on, then think it's OK to barge past you spilling drinks over your shoulder, then stand in your way & take photographs. Aaaarrggghhhh! mad
Top notch though. 'Bravo!' headbang headbang headbang

From 3121....

PRINCE got severely screamed on by the locals while shooting photographs 4 a new coffee table book called 21 Nights in London. He was posing in front of a chauffeur-driven Mercedes whilst a CD of his August 28th aftershow played full blast in the alley. Neighbors were not 2 keen on the most raucous version of ALL SHOOK UP ever recorded and screamed obscenities at the singer. Prince and his whole camera crew cracked up laughing but mercifully turned the music WAYYY down 2 accommodate the enraged residents.

Randee St. Nicholas is directing the project and had approached her long lost friend and suggested he do a series of photos in and around London 2 memorialize this historic event. PRINCE has been injoying his stay in London and agreed 2 participate in making a scrapbook of this glorious summer 4 himself and his fans. We cant wait 2 c the results. Hopefully the disturbed neighbors will 4give them all when they c the pictures. smile

I don't want to see any more aftershows, just so I don't lose any memories of last night. The 14th was superb, but last night was in a different league and my fav aftershow of all time.

It was like witnessing The Undertaker video (but better) live.

I missed the 14th, 18th and the f**king 24th, like a twat.

I live in london have been to all main shows (but one) and can get home in 45 min, so I got no excuse.

I was dying to see him play after the Sat 25h (horns) blow - out.

What I saw last night left me feeling truly blessed, had me in tears to be honest.

Oh I reckon it's gotta be true. He seemed to come on last night with a definite purpose - to ROCK THE PLACE!

Plus, there seemed to be plenty of things lablled REC in that sound/lighting desk area too, so I would guess he's probably recording all of them...

Agreed. Last night's aftershow was a killer! Turning Sexuality (Spiritualitywhatever) into Johnny B Goode half way through made me chuckle. The aftershow on 18th was truly funky but for stripped down simplicity you can't beat last night. Prince, if this doesn't make it on to a special One Night Alone style concert/aftershow CD box set you really are missing a trick! cool
