Prince tribute concert in Reykjavik - REVIEW

For reference here is the old thread with info about the concert: http://www.prince.org/msg/12/188320

As I write this, it's approximately 20:20 in Iceland, about 21 hours since the concert ended... "What concert?" you may ask.... The Prince Tribute Concert in Reykjavik, Iceland.... Anywho, I went to first of two shows last night and here's my review:

I arrived at the venue at approx. 21:00 with a friend.... As we arrived the band was soundchecking to "Uptown"..... sounded cool..... Then for the next hour we sat at a table close to the stage and waited patiently for the show to start... Oddly enough, during the wait the venue played Guns N' Roses' "Greatest Hits" thru the PA from beginning to end..... While I certainly enjoy a bit of G'N'R every now and then, I wish the people in charge had played something more MPLS-sounding.... approx. 5 minutes past 10 pm the show started and the band started playing the intro to "1999".... The band was comprised of a drummer, bassist, guitarist, keyboard player, trumpet player/percussionist, 2 back up singers, male and female (Khalif and Gudbjorg Elisa), a very HOT female dancer and Seth Sharp, the lead singer of the band. And here is the setlist (my memory about the first half is a bit fuzzy, but I believe the setlist for the second part is correct):

1999
Little Red Corvette
Uptown excited
Head
Fury (first verse sung by Gudbjorg Elisa)
Musicology
U Got The Look
Darling Nikki headbang
Joy In Repetition - Come (medley)
Nothing Compares 2 U
Raspberry Beret
Sexy MF booty!

BREAK

Let's Go Crazy
Partyup
Lolita
Gett Off
When Doves Cry
Cream
The Beautiful Ones bow
Dirty Mind (performed by Khalif)
Purple Rain

Kiss

A few notes about the show:
* Fury was very, very different from the guitar based version Prince plays live... the arrangement was more jazz/R&B.... Still it sounded good....
* The band had a different lineup than at last year's concert.... The players are more experienced and the sound is a more free-flowing and improvised... the arrangements were less "by the book" than at last year's show although "Nothing Compares 2 U" was exactly like the Hits/B-sides version, right down to the adlibs hmm
* The absolute highlights for me were:
Darling Nikki... electrifying performance... the crowd was REALLY into that song....
The Beautiful Ones - while Seth has a very good voice in general, his falsetto is just outstanding.... I saw a newspaper quote about Seth: "He sings like an angel".... I guess the paper didn't lie.... bow
Kiss - The aforementioned sexy dancer walked to the tables closest to the stage, including our table, and got people to get into the groove, as if that was a problem.... She (can't remember her name) is F-I-N-E! sexy horny jerkoff

* The only flaws I can point out right now are that the guitar and keyboards were a bit too low in the mix at times.... also I would have preferred a saxophone solo to the trumpet solo that was played in "Nothing Compares 2 U".....

This was a really fun show..... The band was tight, actually it was better than the lineup last year... The backup singers did their job nicely and Seth certainly is blessed with a great voice... but the sexy female dancer made the evening even more enjoyable.... After the show I met Seth, the lead singer, and chatted with him for a few minutes... Very nice guy I might add... I heard that he sometimes lurks around these parts and I have a sneaking suspicion that he is reading this thread.... So Seth, if you're out there... please check in at the Org and post something.... the people here are a friendly bunch razz

sounds like fun! did they have the costumes and whatnot going on, or was it more about the music?

The dancer changed clothes for almost every song..... She wore for instance a school girl uniform for "Darling Nikki" biggrin .... I remember Seth changed clothes a few times.... One ... ehm.... "interesting" moment was during "Cream" when he wore a fur coat and I believe the dancer took it off at the end of the song so Seth performed "The Beautiful Ones" wearing nothing except his boxers lol .... the players didn't wear any special "funk" suits or stuff like that.... So I guess the focus of the show was nicely balanced between the music and the performance/image factor.... Also I must mention that both Seth and the female dancer have amazing energy on stage... They danced their asses off, especially the girl, and she btw has a really nice ass razz
