Seattle report: he played Billie Jean, you MJ haters! =-)

Y'all. Go. No amount of credit card debt should keep you from enjoying this show. No degree of squeamishness about the religious stuff should keep you from this funk.

I'm all tired and stanky and need to go to bed, but I wanted to get this down before I sleep my memories away.

Line. Thanks much to the line wrangler guy, you were very helpful. KUBE 93.3 sucks ass, can we all say that together now? SUCKS ASS. They were playing anything but Prince, and finally they pulled out the warner bros 'best of' album, still in the fucking shrinkwrap, unwrapped it and put it on for awhile. Across the street was the van from the radio station (the Beat) that actually plays Prince music, even had him painted on the van, but KUBE beat them to the spot next to the line. Oh well.

Soundcheck. Hella fun. We were a pretty laid-back crowd, no crazies. Funny, nice people; a pleasure to wait around with. =-) Prince was feeling chatty. One guy stood up and told a nice story about growing up on the streets and being inspired by the man, and Prince seemed to genuinely appreciate it. We talked about the Experience Music Project (a music museum thingie; also where the afterparty was held), where the profits from that were going, and about the music industry and whatnot. Somebody asked about Wendy and Lisa. . .perhaps a smidgen of tension? He just said that he hadn't spoken with them very recently, but that they had a new album coming out soon.

My personal favorite moment was when he started into Do U Lie, a guy in the crowd starts to sing it, and Prince stops and says, "next time somebody comes up here to sing, I'm gonna play this" and he (on the keyboards) starts ino this FUNKY instrumental version of Billie Jean, which Maceo picked up on. Everybody laughed. It was great. He commented that it's really a great song when played by a real band. Anyway, as a Prince freak who also loves MJ, it was a major highlight.

He let us vote on whether the horns (Maceo, Candy, and the other dude, I forget his name but they were ALL AMAZING) should come down one isle or 3. Was asking us about the sound. I think trying to let us know that he was still aware of us; it's kinda weird to have this big crowd of people silently watching you work, I guess.

Tore up Peach, and did Money Don't Matter. Way fun.

Show. Similar setlist to the others, I didn't write it down. Case of You was a highlight for me, as was Adore. All the Rainbow Children stuff was great, I'm not nuts about the album, but live it is crazy funky, and you really must shake your ass. I mean seriously. Shake it hard. He sang his little racism bit tonight, was he doing that before? I thought he was just speaking it from the other reports, but I could be wrong. Anyway, he made a song out of it. I don't entirely agree with his thinking there, but it was at least thought-provoking. The only dissapointment for me was the lack of Condition of the Heart, but Anastesia made up for it. Also didn't appreciate the 'buy my religious beliefs or go home now' comment at the end. But whatever. Too high to care at that moment.

On the 'who smashed up the ride' bit, he was like, "Bill Gates? Well, can he buy us another one then?" It was cute. As was the 'uncle dancing at the BBQ' bit that he has done at other shows. Freakin hilarious.

Clothes, for those who care:
Soundcheck- white top and pants with big fonky boots w/nubby knitted looking tops.
Beginning of show: grey suit and boots, black shirt, pimpin hat
End of show: purple sparkly top and pants, white sleeves.

Afterparty at the EMP, fun atmosphere, I think Prince was in the balcony with his band. No hassles, all of the staff at both venues were very professional.

All of the details aside: Consider this man's impact on music, his brilliance, and all that he has given you, and then stand there and feel his guitar reverberate through your bones. Feel the bass thump in your chest louder than your heart ever has or will. It is such a moment in time. I didn't want it to end.

Go.

Can I be the first to ask what the comment at the end was?

I can't tell you how much it's going to suck if this tour doesn't make it to Europe intact. I really wanna see Maceo doing it to death!

That's just like the very end of the story! You need to explain what you're actually talking about!

Yup, yup! Just got in from EMP mahself! Prince didn't play because it was kind of a dead crowd...I know from kicking it at Paisley a few times that if the crowd ain't feeling it, he ain't either. The DJ completely SUCKED! Played stuff NO one wanted to hear or could dance to.

The show...unbelievable! Nuff said. Nite all...I'm adding this evening to the "experience" file.

Maybe maybe maybe I could learn to love...I mean the right way, I mean the only way...if I was just closer to my higher self...

"Also didn't appreciate the 'buy my religious beliefs or go home now' comment at the end. "

This sounds like Prince humor to me. Especially for someone who changes his band/religious beliefs every 4 or 5 yrs.

He wasn't joking about the comment at the end. It was during Anastesia. He talked about how his band all has to play the same peice of music to be unified, and said that we all need to believe the same thing, the scriptures, to be unified. He said something very close to, "if you aren't feeling that, go home now". I just ignored him. The rest of the show had been very chill in that regards, I wasn't going to let myself get pissed at that point.

On the Billie Jean trip, yeah, I think it would be too strong to say that he was dissing MJ, but he was basically joking with us about the fact that so many Prince fans act like MJ is the freakin devil or something. But once he started into the actual song, he had to acknowledge that it is funky as hell, and that's when Maceo started playing. Really great.

And yes, he looked amazing. He didn't appear to be wearing much makeup, no eyeliner or anything, which is kind of a nice change, and his clothes were fairly simple, by his standards. But they fit real real nice. wink

Keep in mind that Michael's Billie Jean was produced by Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton. I believe that Michael wrote the lyrics but certainly did not lay down the bass line, melody and overall structure of the song.

Peace

It was produced by Q, and I'm sure that he made good contributions, but on MJs behalf, he has said that BJ is one of the songs that he is most proud of, because he got it to sound just how he heard it in his mind (which, let's be real, is tough for a non-musician). Of all of his hits, it is probably the one that was most truly written by him.

Not that it matters. The Prince/Maceo version was very cool whomever wrote the thing.

Isn't it ironic? Prince played Billie Jean better than MJ ever could, since MJ doesn't play any instruments. Prince could take that song in a million different directions live while MJ can only recreate the video.

I was at a Prince afterparty once and the DJ had a Prince vs MJ contest. The DJ would play a Prince song, then an MJ song and back and forth.

There were as many Prince fans dancing to MJ as there were dancing to Prince.
