NICK CANNON ON KEVIN HART STEPPING DOWN: ‘I’M PROUD OF HOW HE HANDLED THE SITUATION’
December 08, 2018 05:53 PM

In an attempt to defend Kevin Hart, who stepped down from hosting...emy Awards following a backlash over his past homophobic comments, Nick Cannon has resurfaced old tweets from Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler that he says also used homophobic language.

“Interesting,” Cannon, 38, tweeted on Friday evening alongside an old tweet of Handler’s from 2010. “I wonder if there was any backlash here…”

In the message, she wrote, “This is what a f— bird likes like when he flexes,” including a photo that is no longer available.

Cannon went on to share a 2012 tweet from Schumer, in which the comedian wrote, “Enjoy skyfall f—. I’m bout to get knee deep in Helen Hunt #thesessions.”

“I’m just saying… should we keep going???” he captioned the message.

He also resurfaced a 2010 tweet from Silverman — who recently said she cringes at “material I ...ars ago” — where she wrote, “I dont mean this in a hateful way but the new bachelorette’s a f—.”

“And I f— love Wreck it Ralph!!! 🤦🏾‍♂️,” he wrote alongside the tweet, referring to the movie Ralph Breaks the Internet. He included an emoji of a black man and the mars symbol, which is used to signify the male sex.

Speaking about her past mistakes, Silverman recently told The Guardian, “All I can do is learn from it, be changed forever by it, and do what I can to make it right going forward.”

“Certainly stuff that I did 10 or 15 years ago, I cringe at now,” she continued, adding that she now sees the jokes “very differently.”

In an interview with Variety published in November, Silverman also addressed the fact that she doesn’t mind holding herself accountable to her past remarks.

“I feel like unless you can admit to those things, you can’t be changed by them and you can’t even forgive yourself for them,” she shared.

Reps for Schumer, Silverman and Handler did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment about Cannon’s tweets.

In response to a fan who asked him to “audit” his own tweets, Cannon replied, “Nope!!”

“You know I’ve been saying f— up s— since twitter started! I don’t play that politically correct bulls—! F— politics!! Only Truth!” he added.

However, as another Twitter user who looked through Cannon’s old tweets pointed out, the Wild ‘n Out creator and host previously spoke out against comedians and black men for making homophobic remarks in the past.

In one tweet from 2010, Cannon wrote, “Honest question: why are we as Black men so homophobic?” In a 2012 message, Cannon remarked, “If your best joke includes ‘gay’ or ‘F—’ you should be kicked of [sic] Twitter this ain’t the 3d grade!”

“Idgi, @NickCannon. If what you said in 2010 and 2012 still holds, why not hold Kevin accountable?” the Twitter users wrote, before addressing the tweets from Schumer, Silverman and Handler.

“I don’t like any of the white women you ‘exposed’ lol. So do you. But how you gonna go after white women because a Black man was wrong, @NickCannon ?” the social media user added.

RELATED: Kevin Hart Once Admitted ...nsitive’

Shortly after it was announced earlier this week that Hart would be hosting the prestigious awards show, Cannon shared a supportive message for his pal online.

“Couldn’t be happier for this a—!! @kevinhart4real,” Cannon tweeted. “Real talk my bro deserves every bit of what God is blessing him with. The hardest working, kindest and most genuine dude… “

He was also supportive of a video Hart posted after the backlash had begun, where the Night School star shared he wouldn’t be apologizingfor his remarks because he already “addressed this several times.”

“We with you regardless!!!” Cannon wrote, commenting on Hart’s Instagram video. “You know how we feel about people trying to control us anyway!!”

Hart did eventually go on to apologize.

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past,” he tweeted shortly after he shared he would be stepping down from hosting the Oscars.

“I’m sorry that I hurt people.. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart,” Hart added. “Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”

I don't like Kevin Hart at all. He's not funny. Not even remotely entertaining whatsoever. And if this controversy puts an end to his career it would be absolutely fantastic as far as I'm concerned.

HOWEVER, as much as I dislike him and his "comedy", I think the whole thing is beyond stupid. So he made a few jokes and used a few "unacceptable" words. So what? He's a comedian. A lot of comedians use strong and offensive language. Should comedians like George Carlin or Billy Connelly have their DVDs banned because they used strong language? Is Eddie Murphy's "Raw" stand-up special now going to see him punished because he said "faggot" in his act? Rodney Dangerfield told a few rape jokes so is he also now on the naughty list? Punishing someone now over something they said years ago that does not represent their real opinion, but rather was said as part of a joke, is a very dangerous precedent to set. Because why stop at comedians? Musicians will also have to be taken to task. Shane McGowan used the word "faggot" in Fairytale of New York so should his records be taken off the shelves? Perhaps Prince will also be punished for his "rape lyrics" in Extraloveable. Where does it end?

I like Kevin Hart. I do not think that what he said on social media should prevent him from hosting a show! And the show he is not allowed to be the host of is Boring as Fuck, so I do not watch it Anyways!

People should be more concerned about Racism and the government who is against gay marriage, etc.

We all know people who said a negative remark about gay people. That starts from the older people in the family.

I highly recommend "Real Husbands of Hollywood". One of the funniest shows I've seen this millenium. The cast - including Kevin Hart - is absolutely perfect. Seasons 1 and 2 are gold.

"STEPPED DOWN" - meaning powerful folks strongly advised him to exit gracefully.

This is ridiculous. When Eminem was spitting homophobic lyrics he was still allowed to not only perform at the oscars but he ended up winning one. It's not even about acknowledging the fact that people can change and grow. It's about the Academy failing to acknowledge the genre of comedy as an artform. If it's said in a rap verse it's ok, it's an artistic expression but if it's said during a standup it's meant to be taken seriously? It's called comedy for a reason people...

I don't find Hart exceptionally talented, but people way less wittier than him hosted the Oscars multiple times before. For once, I just want people to acknowledge that the political climate now is extremly different than 10, 5, hell, just 3 years ago and is constantly changing in terms of what's accepted as a joke and what's appropriate etc. How long are you going to hold someone accountable for what he/she said in the past...

fair enough... but none of the people i or nick mentioned faced much backlash over their hate speech.... and the fact that some in this topic love to defend hate speech (even people that I used to expect better from) from liberals or against conservatives. In this very topic, a race-based slur was used against someone... sad...

Why do Americans always make everything political? Kevin Hart isn't a political figure. He's a (shit) comedian. Why the need to bring up liberals and Conservatives. You guys do this in every thread. You're always moaning that your side is more harshly treated. And the left is just as bad as the right for doing it. Bunch of childish hypocrites, the lot of you. You'd think with a nation of people so politically minded that you'd be able to put someone competant in the White House.

No not everything is political... I gave (as did Nick Cannon) examples of other people who said the same or worst as Kevin and suffered much less backlash.

Pointing out the double standard is not at all the same as moaning... you seem to be the one moaning!

That comes across as really hateful. Why would you want to see a comedian you don't give a shit about have his career ended over a controversy you think is "beyond stupid"?

You brought up their political leanings. Nick Cannon didn't. In other words, you made it political.

This thread was originally in the General Discussion forum. And was moved here for some reason. Despite the fact that the issue is neither political nor religious.

Pointing out Americans lack of political understanding is not moaning.

I call it like I see it. Although, in fairness to you, at least you acknowledge that "your party" has many issues. A lot of people here on both sides don't. So you're a step up from a lot them as far as I'm concerned.

They've both picked terrible people for as long as I can remember.

But always remember, there are degrees of "terrible ". A hangnail can be terrible. A toothache can be terrible. But so can having your brains blown out by a shotgun!

Do you know that for a fact? Perhaps it was Hart's own decision - seems that is was, according to "best friend" Nick Cannon. If the Academy renegged on their invitation - then it's on them.

The Academy is not known for its consistency with regard to who wins, who is nominated, who hosts etc. I agree, though - they do fail to acknowledge comedy as a higher form of art.

Kevin Hart 'evaluating' his decision to step down as Oscars host as Ellen DeGeneres voices support

Kevin Hart may be having a change of heart after announcing he was stepping down from hostin...emy Awards in the wake of controversy over homophobic and transphobi...old tweets.

This new development comes after Hart taped an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, which will air Friday.

“I really want you to host the Oscars,” DeGeneres, a former Oscars host herself, says in a preview clip from her show. The talk show host goes on to reveal she personally called the Academy to let them know she would support reinstating Hart as the host.

“They were like, ‘Oh my God. we want him to host. We feel like maybe he misunderstood or it was handled wrong or maybe we said the wrong thing but we want him to host,'” DeGeneres tells Hart and the audience of her conversation. Later she comes back from commercial break introducing her guest as “this year’s Oscars host, Kevin Hart.”

“I think you have said a lot of amazing things. You’ve put a lot of things on my mind,” Hart tells DeGeneres during his hour-long interview. “I’m promising you I’m evaluating this conversation…Let me assess, just to sit in the space and really think. And you and I will talk before anything else.”

Honestly, the odds of me actually watching the show are pretty low so I won't be seeing him one way or the other anyway, even though I like him, I'll see him elsewheres that's for sure. He ain't hurtin' for this check.
