From One White Gay Male to Another: Calling out the Implicit Racism in Dan Savage’s Politics

February 28, 2012

By Kirk Grisham

The recent launch of Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign on MTV networks is failing to gain momentum among progressives because the campaign itself is myopic. While I applaud Savage for responding to the increasing number of gay and lesbian suicides that often follow bullying and violence, the framing of this campaign gives me pause. The campaign was developed in response to a culmination of the heartrending stories of gay and lesbian youth suicides (some of whom were youth of color-many of which have historically been unable to get national or even local media attention) within the media that reached its apex with the tragic death of Tyler Clementi, a white gay male.

Entire story here.

From what I've seen, many blacks (just like whites) are only aware of what the media reports to them or what people are talking about. I've heard many black people say things like "We don't commit suicide, that's something that white folks do" simply because it doesn't get talked about nearly as much as when someone white does it.

Also, if you notice when a white gay person is killed in a hate crime, it is reported as a hate crime. When a black gay person is killed, unless he or she is killed by someone white, it is not reported as a hate crime. When a black gay person is killed by other black people simply for being gay, it is simply reported as another "black on black crime" and black on black crime in general by the media is reported as "oh well...." with no outrage from the public unless it is a very important black person that was killed.

When it comes down to a gay issue or gay rights, a lot of people of all races just somehow see it as a "white issue" because all they ever see on TV when it comes to the outspoken leaders are white faces. There need to be more outspoken black leaders out front in the gay movement as well as those in many other races also to be more effective. We're not Republicans so we don't need "token" blacks or hispanics becuase there are millions of us in all races and everyone knows that but they seem to forget it because all they ever see is white faces. And media outlets know that also and those like Fox News love to take the issue and turn it into a "gay vs. black" thing and get us all to hating each other knowing damn well that there are millions of black gay people also. Their favorite thing to do is point out the fact that there a bunch of black assholes that are against us in places like California and then point out how liberal the whites are there that are for us as if whites have changed and now blacks are the enemy. However, they conveniently leave out the fact that California is one of the most liberal places for white people in the country. Come down to Mississippi and put it to a vote. White folks in droves hate us down here. They are trying to turn it into a "gay vs. black" thing as a divide and conquer tactic and a lot of gay dumbasses as well as black dumbasses are falling right into their hands.

I find this article to be a bit niggling as I often do when a white dude will call out another white dude for some sort of subtle, perceived, hinted racism. I don't care much for Dan Savage and I don't classify myself as a stereotypical gay (as I would Dan Savage), but I recognize that the campaign has gone through many, many channels and has always been inclusive.

Does the It Gets Better campaign exclude non-white gays from participating? I've never heard that before.

I thought it was a stretch to correlate Savage's support of the Iraq War with the It Gets Better campaign, but maybe that's just me. Regardless, heaping all the media's focus on white gays on Savage is unfair, isn't it?

This echos my thoughts.

I think the artcile raises some interesting questions and it's good food for thought, but I think it also heaps far too much on Savage himself.

Interesting, though. And good to think about, as I said.

And there it is.
