She chose to dress as a shit hopper, I'm not surprised. Nine times out of ten, when they dress in blackface, it's to make fun of the most ignorant and negative stereotypes. Wake up folks. White people may be 75% of shit hop's consumers but black folks need to stop buying it and supporting it whatsoever and better yet, don't make the shit. There's more images like this to come though as long as it dominates the music scene.

I'm all for doing whatever it takes to get you to where you want to be! So I'm not knocking his hustle. However, where I draw the line...is when your hustle defines you as a person!

Just for an example...many, many people tried to define Tupac by his thug persona. Yet, I was always able to distinguish between Tupac the man from Tupac the shithopper...as you would say. wink It's what endeared him to me. I could see where he was trying to go and would have...had others with his best interests at heart...realized it sooner!

With Lil' Wayne, I personally, don't see any distinction. He is...who he is and I simply cannot support him. His meteoric rise has given me cause to pause because I know...what he's selling is not...what we should be buying!

Well, all I know is, you didn't see these white kids running around in blackface immitating black musical entertainers when a lot of my favorites were running the R&B scene. innocent I never saw any in blackface immitating Con Funk Shun or Lakeside.....because they didn't have the good taste to have heard of them. lol But if it's something that makes black folks look like fools, or criminals, or jackasses, or just plain boring (which is what shit hop music is) you better believe they've heard of them and not only have they heard of them, but like them.

Oh, you know that I'm going to gloat that it was a shit hopper being immitated because it just adds to more reasons why people should abandon that genre. Hey, if they don't have the good taste to drop it simply because it's dull (which should be reason enough), then it's always fun to point out the other negativity in it in hopes people will wise up. I just wish there was some way to link Shitney Houston to it also but that little goodie two shoes is too damn squeaky clean. That would be like trying to turn people against Mary Poppins. evillol

Oh please, overly sensitive my eye. That comment about the race card is always a "cop-out" when folks don't want to hear the truth that this country still breathes racism. I guess any discussion about racism in America means people are overly sensitive in your opinion. When people were being lynched for no valid reason other than their skin color, would you say they were "over-sensitive?" When Jim Crow laws were enacted in America would you say discussing those events of the past are being over-sensitive? Should people not talk about ugly, historical events or present day racist behavior because you don't want to hear about it? This is the real world, and racism in America exists whether you like it or not.

Let's not be ridiculous. Fact is, racist acts and mockery still continue to rear its ugly head in America. Just look at what happened during the Obama campaign and after his election, all caught on tape. Do you see people who discuss what took place during Obama's campaign, as being over-sensitive or is it that you just can't handle the hard truth about racism? You'll probably see some of that tonight on HBO when Ed Norton's documentary about Obama airs. You will see how some in America reacted about the U.S. possibly having it's first Black President. No one makes this stuff up, it's many Americans portraying racist BS in front of the cameras, in present day, and that sh*t is dripping directly from their mouths.
[Edited 11/3/09 12:03pm]

you act like black people are the only race that has been oppressed and cannot be prejudice. what about the native americans who were killed and had their land taken away from them? or hispanics? or the asians especially during WWII or the jews...remember the holocaust? Hilter killed about 6 million jews. you know there are many whites that are jews. what about women? or the poor that is mostly made up of white people in the United States. you are not the only race that was oppressed. Racism is racism and prejudice is prejudice. Just because something has occured longer than the other does not make any less wrong or less of a sin. u need to wake the hell up.[Edited 11/3/09 12:28pm]

lol Seems you refuse to wake up from a deep sleep or you wouldn't be so defensive when the topic of racism is discussed. It is what it is, and it happened. Imagine if you were in a history class that gave all the actual details of what happened to Africans/African-Americans in the past, would you react the same way because the truths of the past were exposed? Face it, it is what it is, and yet descendants of those who were enslaved, despite what happened in the past, and some laws that were written to deny them their human rights, and the continued racist behavior and attitudes that still exist, did not destroy their strength, hope or faith. They continue to make strives, achievements and reach goals.

Secondly, why don't you try and speak to people from the groups you mentioned and find out how they feel about how some of their ancestors were abused and wronged, then you will have your answer.

No need to get extremely defensive when dealing with "uncomfortable, documented truths". I can talk about all the atrocities and have empathy for all those that were wrong, because I won't accept blanket-coverd truths. You can't and never will stop anyone from revealing America's past and present racism. If you don't have the thick skin to discuss these topics, it's no use getting mad at others that can recognize the past, admit this country's wrongs and go on with their lives. Discussing it is not going stop the earth from turning today or tomorrow or when you feel it should stop rotating.. It is what it is. Racism, unfortunately still exist.

Nothing was done about the first video. at all. If that was a white person saying kill all black people then you know that all hell would break loose. There are many instances where white men/women have been beaten up and killed by black people...an obvious hate crime and nothing is done about it but switch it around and it's the top news story for 6 months. I've seen numerous black people address whites as their ethicity or a racial comment/joke....seen it at parties, clubs etc. When addressed by this, many blacks think it is funny as well as some whites excusing and saying it doesn't offend me. What about the time Jamie Foxx went off on Miley Cyrus and the radio dj called her a white bitch....that dj never got fired or got in trouble. When Don Imus made his comment(which was wrong), he was fired right on the spot. fyi, calling someone a white bitch is like me calling someone the n word. What about these black women who loate black men dating white women...and come up with the most ridicolous bs on why he's with her. Stereotyping an entire race....same goes with angry black men who hate when black women date white men. Midicover called Justin Timberlake as a white boy the other day then said britney spears dances like a white cheerleader. or racist lyrics against white people in rap/hip hop? The problem is racist blacks feel the they have the freedom of expression especially when it comes to race. Whites are told to be quiet and have the false sense of guilt about slavery.

Check out American history, at least the kind that will tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. You will read about the butcherings, rapings, the various chains put around their necks, hands and feet. You will find many stories/incidents of people ready to lynch and terrorize black people back in the not-so-distant past, like the 1920s when KKK members and poor whites raided Rosewood, Florida and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and chased Blacks off their own property, stole their belongings, lynched some of them, chased them out of their towns.

This very day, you have towns in America, that prevent Blacks from moving in at all, because the townspeople are prejudiced against Blacks. This was seen in a documentary by Professor Henry Gates less than two years ago. The white people clearly stated they do not like Black people. They referred to them as "darkies" and other insulting names, and this was less than two years ago this was aired, and these same people are living on property that was stolen from Blacks. Deeds stolen and all.

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1920s some houses were actually bombed in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now if that is not domestic terrorism at its worst, then you tell me what is. Should we pretend none of this happened or should we throw in other atrocities to not make it look like it was that bad? You tell me. Will that make you feel better? At least try and learn about America's past, by learning all the facts and not just what you want to hear. Posting youtube vids of one or two black people threatening white people still won't erase or equate to the genocide that was done against Africans/African-Americans in this country. It's an ugly history, and it is not surprising that many refuse to accept it, but had educators told the truth to students years ago, then the truth about America's past, would not be so shocking to people today.

If you'd like I can recommend some books for you to read about racist events in America's past and not-so-distant past, but you have to be prepared to deal with the ugly details of it.

You know, to even survive in this country and get by the day-to-day racist BS and mockery, ignorance, you have to be one hell of a strong person. How about when a "display" shows John McCain dressed in a KKK outfit with another figure dressed as Barack Obama is displayed as running from him?

How about when it is a white person "displayed" as hanging from a noose, like the one seen in the picture below, representing Sarah Palin?

If you call one racist, then what do you call the other???

This is all totally off-topic. You were asked for examples of 'whiteface' but instead you've gone off about racism in general, which always seems to happen in any race thread on the org. I don't entirely trust your intentions here. Any decent person understands that racism comes from all angles and is perpetrated towards all people (to greater or lesser degrees, and with greater or lesser frequency, depending on the group we're talking about), but that's not exactly what this thread is about. Why you are you taking it there and getting so defensive/aggressive? Nobody's saying white people don't suffer racism. We're talking about this cheerleader's choice of Halloween get-up and what we all think about it and the connotations of it.

Dude before you slander me and lie by accusing me of hating white people, and calling me a racist, you better think about the accusation you are making towards me, because I consider that slander and very offensive.

You are basically saying that because I speak about the atrocities that was done against Blacks in this country, which is documented history, you label me a racist and a "white people hater?" Well, dude you are wrong. Because if I am, then you must be referring to everyone else on here who doesn't agree with your point of view regarding the topic of the article discussed. People here tried to explain to you why they feel a certain way about the cheerleader image, and this country's racist past, and yet you ignore their explanations and instead point fingers and insult or call them names. Believe what you want, but don't make false accusations or slanderous statements about me. If I made an accusation like that about you, I would have been snipped/warned or banned.

You chose to insult people on this thread, because you don't like the truths that are being revealed about this country's past or how people feel about the current topic of this thread.

If you truly want to learn about this country's past and educate yourself about Africans and African-Americans, and their history/culture/languages, various lifestyles, etc., then you should make the effort to do that, instead of pointing fingers and making false and offensive accusations about people here. But I won't take the path you chose to take, I will take a higher path instead and recommend some material for you to research and read:

Here's some info on the transatlantic slave trade:

The first link is an actual database, with a list of names of African men, women, children, who were on board ships from Africa, and taken to North America, Europe, Brazil and the Caribbean to be enslaved; the voyage consisted about 35,000 voyages;the list does not lie, as the proof is in the pudding:

You. are. BANANAS..... You must be mad that your "Pass" was revoked.

I openly joke back and forth about race within my circle, and joke my race all that time. We also have serious race discussions too; about each side. So this makes me think that you are really trippin'.

Instead of getting your race news from Fox, pick up some books, Such as "Racial healing" and "Making Whiteness".

If you wanna be uptight about it then fine. We are all entitled to feel the way we feel. But please, don't be mad that some of your White sistren and brethren have passes and yours was revoked.

The problem is we only know from the outside. We don't know the person in the picture. We don't know what goes on inside her brain! We don't know her intentions of the costume.

The topic of the 'Halloween costume' itself gone off the rail long ago, when HollyWood/Movieswere brough up but this happens in most threads.

Furthermore, things are getting so PC that some just do not understand. Comedy is Comedy. It will sometimes piss you off as it is created to do so. Also we have something in US of A called Freedom. Even if this costume is racist or a movie is on the line of racist or a rap album is racist. We do have freedom and it protects the stupidest of the stupids! Either go or don't go to the movies. Either do or don't listen to the music. Just like Kambon or Farrakhan have the freedom to say stupid shit - they are protected. That's a good thing.

We have this society that points and screams "racist" - when people just are having fun and it maybe dumb fun at that. You don't know the person in those pictures. Shame on you people who are just as racist on a daily basis but get on here and act like you are above everyone!! Like you are a Jesus Christ figure. Like you never sin or your shit don't stink. Keep pointing and screaming 'racist' to further your own stupid agendas.

Absolutely. Use education as your weapon to fight ignorance and racism, I don't care how many stones/blocks/walls anyone tries to throw in front of you. If you have to climb over the stones/blocks/walls, do it. If the ladder is too damn short, get a longer ladder and jump over those damn stones/blocks/walls. There's no excuse. If you have no shame in discussing the past to give respect to those before you, no matter what names you're called or accusations made against you, just because you dare to speak the truth about America's history, talk about it anyway. Our ancestors did not die in vain, to see us fail or act as though their lives never existe or had no value.

Yes, dumb stupid fun. All of it. You see just like the constume. I don't believe the intentions were for the cheerleader to be racist! That connotation was placed by the person looking at the pictures. No proof that person in the picture is some threat to society or someone that hates black people.

To blow up every fucking thing and stink up the joint and make everything about racism. It's silly. Just done IMO to further some agendas.

I don't care about some jackass having some dumb fun at a party! Or Graham parodying some rapper. I would think when a kid is gang raped for 2.5 hours and everyone looks on and/or passes by!! We have bigger problems to deal with than some stupid shit. Cancer/War etc..and 6 pages of nonsense about a costume party. This is why we suck. We suck!

Cool. Yes, I thought White Chicks was funny - but I remember someone saying 'oh, white people are going to be offended because the two black guys were parodying dumb white chicks!!!' In philosophy its all how you look at things.

I'm White and I split my side open. I didn't realize White people were offended by it...I guess..... I went out and bought I liked it so much. But I'm also a big goof that LOVES dumb ass comedies. It was also a first date movie and holds sentimental value too. Yes, that's how fricking stupid I am. I request to be taken to White Chicks...But he stuck around. And now, we saw Tropic Thunder and LOVED it.

Anyway...carry on! smile

Yes, same here. Comedy is Comedy. IMO it will always be cutting edge and can offend. If some on here are offended by 'White Chicks' or hip-hop. Don't go and don't buy the records. It's really that easy.

Wait when this rap that is horrorcore goes mainstream! Then they will have more to waaaaa! about that!

japanrocks

check out my thread on 'white flight' that nobody seems to have noticed

you would rather argue on whether or not blackface is appropriate or not?

face it, it will always be around

but it will never come back like in the historical sense

and i just came back from a Halloween party where a black dude was in white-face dressed up like Pee Wee Herman

anything wrong with that?

no, we though it was funny

and funny how vaindaddy found a way to link this to his own made up nonsense words he uses to define hip hop culture

i went as Buckwheat one year.....and at the party I went to there were many black people and another white dude dressed up in blackface Aunt Jemima

so during one slow dance - Buckwheat danced with Aunt Jemima on the dance floor

anything wrong with that? or is that funny? pretty much everyone thought it was funny at the party

What exactly was offensive about it? He wasn't being a stereotype. To me, Jamie Kennedy in Malibu's Most Wanted was more offensive than Tropic Thunder. Jamie's performance in that movie made me think "Is this how he sees black people? Bumbling, Inarticulate, Idiotic, Single minded buffoons?" Have you seen Tropic Thunder? Look at the interaction between the black actor's character and RBD Jr's. character.

If some were upset about Robert Downey's character that was portraying the moronic nature that is Hollywood, why are we not discussing Angelina Jolie portraying a Black woman? They darkened her skin too. And THAT was a slap in the face.

Just poppin' in to comment on this comment. smile

It's good to note for the record that Mariane Pearl is bi/multiracial -- not only Black. And she's not American, either.

Pearl was born in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, France to a Dutch-Jewish father and an Afro-Chinese-Cuban mother.[4][5][6] She was raised in Paris and met Daniel Pearl while he was on assignment there.[7]

Speaking as a biracial woman who has seen biracial characters usually acted by monoracial (if there can truly be such a thing) actors -- both white and black -- I see no more reason to be upset at Jolie portraying Pearl than Ben Vereen portraying the biracial Chicken George in "Roots". At least Jolie's mother is also French, so there IS the culture. I confess, however, as a 12 year old watching that series, I was a little miffed at that; I didn't know any mixed guys who looked like Vereen! wink

More "correctly", perhaps Halle Berry, Rashida Jones or Jennifer Beales could have portrayed Pearl -- whatever. Jolie looked very like Pearl in the movie and treated the character with dignity and respect. Nothing to be mad at, IMO.

That's all . . . cool

i can only speak for myself but I am too numb to really give a damn about a white woman playing a woman of color. When we go back, we saw it in Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments, Imitation of Life, etc. it's almost like a way of life now.

Cleopatra wasn't black. If with Imitation of Life you're talking about the character that was supposed to be a mixed woman that could pass for white it makes sense to cast a white woman (or a woman that could pass for white).

As for Tropic Thunder the good thing about it was that the absurdity of Robert Downey Jr's portrayal got the real black actor to take a good look at himself as a black man. If I remember correctly he started to realize the error of his ways because of their interaction. Also, Downey's character, as was stated, was a jab at those actors that take themselves too seriously not at blacks.

As a black man I don't get offended when a white person puts on blackface and acts like a buffoon. That's a reflection of them. I'm more offended when the real Lil' Wayne makes an ass of himself or the Wayans dress up as white girls and make fun of them. Even then I don't take it to heart because none of it represents me. However, these things (which I personally don't condone since they have no redeeming qualities) should never be given a public forum. In the privacy of one's home people should be able to dress and act any way they want as long as they aren't breaking any laws.

Cleopatra was not white either. There were 7 Cleopatras. Cleopatra 7 was the most famous and of mixed ancestry. It also amazes me that people think that biracial kids could only look like they could pass for white. I've known too many over the years growing up to know that, some you can't even tell have white/black parents, not to mention, the texture of the hair is not all the same for them to "pass" as Caucasian.

All my nieces (sister's children) get mistaken for bi-racial, and they are both their parents are black. My cousin and her siblings have a white father, and black mother, and they all came out looking like they were East Indian/Latinos.
My other cousin who babysat me when I was a kid, also had a white father, and you can tell she has black ancestry, even though she is fair-skinned.

Sorry, but I don't fall for the BS about all bi-racial kids looking like they can actually "pass" as white or there's none with darker-toned skin, as that's like lumping them all in one bowl of soup, and quite frankly there were many bi-racial females that could have played that Imitation of Life role.

Back in the day, Hollywood always used white actresses to portray black girls "passing", asian, native american, and latina women as well. There was a movie named "Pinky" back in the day, where a white actress played a biracial woman.

You have to remember that during that time period, Hollywood was not ready to even "accept or allow" biracial females in those roles, regardless if they could "pass". Didn't matter, because Hollywood was not taking any chances;birracial or black, they all had to go through the same door-"the back door" in those days.

As far as the role Angelie Jolie played, there were plenty of bi-racial females that could have played that role. This is the 2000s--America does not have a shortage of biracial females.
