Bit puzzled that religion doesn't top the discussion. The bible basher culture (denying evolution etc) is right up there with the stereotypes on being dumb, gun loving, obese, materialist, greedy etc.

Like the one about "the consitootion". Why so much import is put on what some men from history books wrote down is beyond me. Evolve. lol

Same story for the bible. Way too stuck on these dusty old texts for guidance.

Excuse me?

I clicked the link and see anything particularly funny. To clarify, I guess it would be funny if there weren't some people who really believe some of that stuff. And it would be even funnier if there weren't people--Americans or other nationalities--who were really like those being described.

The title of the thread is "The reasons Canadians and Britons Hate Ameria and Americans so much.

So I just responded I don't hate Canadians and Britons. And I do think it's a bummer somebody would hate me just by virtue of the fact I'm an American, and there are those people out there, obviously.

Let me put it this way.. speaking of myself and myself only. If somebody is going to "hate-on" me, then hate me for being an "asshole." But to hate me for my culture--not even giving me a chance doesn't seem fair.

I don't hate anybody by virtue of their culture or race. I mean.. sure there are people I dislike. But it's not because they are afflicated with any race or culture.

And if you're referring to my thread in GD... I guess that was on my mind when I responded to this thread. But for me, it's just a nightmare of a situation. I just hope she doesn't marry the guy. So it sure could get a lot worse... and might. To me, that guy is just an asshole... and he's a white, American, redneck. racist, homophobic, asshole. I'm sure there are rednecks who aren't assholes. I'm sure there are right-wing nutcases who aren't assholes. But that guy isn't one of them. He's an asshole first and foremost, or he wouldn't be deliberately stirring the pot.
[Edited 10/26/09 8:31am]

The only good thing about the situation is that at least I know where he stands.
So I'll give him that he isn't hiding his asshole-ness.

just as i thought.....there will not be too many americans here that will agree because most of them dont like to talk about it too much or they cant figure out why other countries would look down on us

I think it's jealousy. I mean come on....we are a higly sustainable nation. We grow all our own stuff. We have an abundance of food, oil (which we seem to not want to touch), even when our economy sucks it's still better than the economies of most countries. Our land is diverse. We literally import and export with ourselves. We have freedom of speech (you are not likely to get killed for disagreeing with the Prez), freedom of religion (worship a cow, we don't care), freedom of political affiliation (your vote really does matter). Is our governemnt corrupt? Sure, as most governments are. Do we still have discrimination? Yes, but it's not as bad as some places.
Doesn't make sense to hate America anymore unless you just want to hate us for starting that damn war in Iraq. If that's your beef. I am totally with you! lol

The globalised spread of American culture and capitalism is something many rally against as with any empirical notion in history. The bottoms fallen out of it as it slowly dawns that its a shallow, monotone and (Contrary to Prof Nevermind's analysis) unsustainable way of living.

While some nations may be jealous at America's vast wealth, Canada isn't one of them. Canada is free, also has an abundance of food, oil, has diverse land, freedom of religion, political affiliation etc...

As a matter of fact, Canada is a net exporter to the US (i.e. we export more than we import) and is the US' number 1 importer of Oil.

So jealous, Canadians are not. I can't speak on behalf of Britons.

The jist of this article is not that anyone REALLY hates America, it's that America, with it's vast influence in the global landscapes, has many elements which other nations don't like and don't want to see spread.

I personally love america, I visit cali 1-2 times/year, and appreciate how much the US has contributed to my quality of life as a Canadian. Most Canadians feel the same. We just also wish that America, as Canada's largest trading partner and friend, took the time to learn about things outside of its nation, and understood that just because an idea isn't american, that doesn't mean it's bad.

If that happened, with America's established infrastructure and vast pool of natural resources, its position as world leader would be more than secure.

Every nation has things that it can improve on, including America, and with America's influence, some people just think their problems are a greater priority.

Don't a lot of Americans post on this site?

So yeah, even though this was written as satire, it does sting a little bit. A component of satire is that there is truth to it. And the truth hurts sometimes. So considering a lot of Americans post here, it's difficult not to get a little defensive.

I mean I think a lot of cultures would get a little defensive.

Are there any lists about why the British hate the French, for example? I've always read that the British and French don't get along very well. I would imagine people from those cultures would get a little defensive, too, when confronted with their worst traits. shrug

Actually, mostly no. The difference is we europeans mix almost constantly. We work together, live together, vist each other countries regularly. Mutual piss taking/criticism is hence a regular activity. As such, its more often a humorous affair, with maybe some serious points underlying it that can be discussed fairly openly and criticism taken without overt defensiveness.

Most major European countires have also had the experience of being a world leader/superpower (or attempteed to be so (read germany)), and have subsequently had our status reduced for a variety of reasons. Such an experience does wonders for providing a little humility and seeing ones own flaws.

Those are the core differences imo i.e. Americans have no sense of humour about themselves (speaking generally) and have yet to learn humility due to reduced status. Fear not though, since this century that will certainly change.

Oh, well thanks for clearing that up. So we don't have a sense of humor either.
Man, we Americans are just no fun at all.

I just think the truth hurts. And besides, we are already aware-after the Bush administration in particular--we don't have a lot of friends anymore. Maybe we never did, actually? But now, we KNOW people don't like us--for real.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep that in mind.

Maybe I just didn't find it rolling on the ground funny? I've never particularly been fond of British humor. wink You know... like that Benny Hill show. It's not for me. Monty Python has always been a little hit or miss for me personally.

Then there was that Canadian comedy show.. it's old. I can't recall the name of it. It was only OK.

But that doesn't mean other people don't find all of it funny. It's just a matter of taste.

Europeans sure take their sports seriously. Soccer matches can be deadly events. The British are still hoping for a Wimby champion. What a letdown that Andy Murray was this year, right? All the hype, and no prize. That mean ol' American Andy Roddick beat him! Now that was funny!

What about it? lol

Hold up now. You're telling me I'm taking this way to seriously. But you can't take a little ribbing about comedy shows and sporting events?

I didn't say I "hated" the British culture, for example. I just said I've never been fond of British humor in general. And you have to admit, it WAS pretty funny when Andy Roddick beat Andy Murray. The British press was hyping Andy Murray as the next Wimby champ, and then Andy Roddick steps-up to beat him! I loved it! Even Andy Roddick said the British media put too much pressure on Andy Murray to win. shrug

You know.. ribbing works both way. I thought you said you all can handle ribbing? Honestly, I think you're taking my comments way too seriously! razz wink

sigh. Yes I realise that was the point you were trying to make with original post. It wasn't a tough one to see.
Yet by not dealing with actual points made (which I would have been interested to read), and instead simply trying to justify your defensive reaction (by attempting to make others defensive), you only serve to reinforce some of the stereotypes presented. (Not to mention, your knowledge of British comedy shows appears to be limited to the 1970's smile )

Yeah. I looked at the thread as just poking fun at us. We, Americans, are a touchy bunch. Hey, if we can't laugh at our short comings, we are in trouble.

I already said the truth hurts; what more do you want? That's my honest response. I didn't deny all these things mentioned weren't part of the American culture. It's disappointing. I guess it's funny in the same way the British can't seem to muster up a Wimby champion in all these years. Hey, don't worry. Andy Murray's still young. He has a shot. lol
