Nigerian children denounced as witches

Has this been discussed before???

This is a horrible, horrible story.

Apparently there are some crazy churches in Nigeria (some of American origin) that are accusing children of practicing witchcraft. Then for a fee, will exorcise them for the parents.

These "exorcisms" are nothing less than torture, often resulting in disfigurement, mutilations and death.

disbelief

Please read the story HERE

hmmm

A literal interpretation of religious texts, pushed by corrupt faith leaders and coupled with a lack of education or resources on the part of parishoners....

Is it sad that these conditions exist that cause these kind of situations to arise, or that I'm not surprised by them anymore?

It is unfortunate that these type of practices happens in various places throughout the world. Even in America unfortunately, we just don't hear about it as much.

It's a combination of ignorance, greed and inhumanity.

Sad and disgusting.

Mental torture is just as bad as physical torture.

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises. Their parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

"It is an outrage what they are allowing to take place in the name of Christianity," said Gary Foxcroft, head of nonprofit Stepping Stones Nigeria.

For their part, the families are often extremely poor, and sometimes even relieved to have one less mouth to feed. Poverty, conflict and poor education lay the foundation for accusations, which are then triggered by the death of a relative, the loss of a job or the denunciation of a pastor on the make, said Martin Dawes, a spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund.

This isn't about religion, it's about poverty, ignorance and genocide all in the name of religion. Like politics, religion has been distorted and manipulated to divide and concur the masses who are often on the poorer and suffering end of the social scale already.

There was a story on 20/20 recently , that witch doctors in the African country of Tanzania I think believed that using the limbs of people who have Albinism (Albinos) in their spells can give power to their recipients. There were horror stories where Adults & Children alike were attacked in their own homes with machetes cutting off their legs or arms. Those who managed to survive were left horribly scarred/disfigured for life.

Yep you are right. I saw that special. There was an incident where an albino baby was ripped from its mother's arms and had it's limbs chopped off. The same beliefs these tribal peoples hold regarding healing properties of ivory, they also hold about consumption of human albino flesh and sex with babies to rid of aids. Not to mention the all out atrocities they commit during war, such as raping women then slicing them from vagina to anus (Congo). I don't think they were this bad before colonialism. They've lost all sense of reason.

almost everything about Africa is messed up right now the things that are happening to those people over there is not right the wars disease starvation etc despite the fact that Africa is the richest continent in the world as far as their resources thats the main reason why Africa was colonized by Europe and now China is over there to make things worse it's quite incredible to me that these western nations want to say how bad Africa is but yet they don't wanna take responsibility for why the continent is messed up

but still its not going to stop me from going to the motherland lol i want to go back to my roots cool

I think there are way more stable/civilised nations than we think but the media (justifiably) shines a bright light on the chaos to raise public awareness I suppose. I've spoken with people who've raved about Kenya, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Egypt and even South Africa. I think for the most part, the more troubled areas are those where the government is utterly corrupt and neglectful of it's people and where resources are scarce. People turn on each other in the most horrific ways.
