Good move on Morehouse's part. I also like the part about: "We are Morehouse, and we will not tolerate profanity in the public square." Or this one, "No pajamas in the classroom. You are men of Morehouse. You are better than that. And I will be watching and expecting class from you." Dang. I kinda wish that I went to Morehouse rather than the University of Minnesota. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Young men of Morehouse, pull up your pants, remove your do-rags and remove your shades and hats when you enter a building. The new policy is an effort to get back to the legacy of Morehouse leaders, said Dr. William Bynum, vice president of the Office of Student Services. We expect our young men to be Renaissance men, said Bynum. When people go about campus we want them to represent the college in an appropriate manner. What is your take on this policy? Analysis and insight of your own... This is untoward! This is not toward! |

No pajamas! I wish I could say I ever wore pajamas to a college class. Damn sure saw them in the hallway.

Excellent point. They need to crack down on that type of nonsense as well, not just focus on the saggy pants issue. I could never understand how that gothic sh*t was/is allowed in school. The saggy pants, pretty much did start with black kids as a fashion statement in the mid 80s through the mid 90s, but now I see more non-black youth still wearing the saggy pants, more than young black males, copying that style, especially among young, hispanic males. Also, i find the saggy pants is still common in parts of the south, moreso than the north, like NYC, where fashion trends change constantly among black kids. Then again it depends on the communities they're from as well as what state they live in, and what is popular among youth. Public School/Universities are institutions for learning not a freaking fashion show or advertised as "express yourself by the way you dress" institutions. I question the so-called educational administrators that run these institutions. I'm also getting tired of many students showing a lack of respect for these institutions by the way some of them dress, not to mention, school administrators who should do more to demand they follow a dress code. If you're preparing students for future careers/employment, then teach them etiquette that will be required of them, i.e., dress codes, codes of ethics they'll have to follow, when they enter the job market. I also think too many parents allow their kids to go to school wearing whatever they want, which may not be acceptable in an institution for "learning". As far as dress codes for employment, on my job, they had to enforce the dress code because you had young, college graduates wearing, way-above-the-middle-of-the-thigh skirts, as well as, very, low cut blouses, that were distracting. I work in the health industry, and it was the physicians and patients that complained about the way some employees were dressed for work, and this is why they enforced it. In many institutions, a dress code is a matter of professionalism and common sense, to say the least. [Edited 10/18/09 12:08pm] Education, the greatest weapon

Not a "fashion show" but there are generally accepted looks in the professional workplace that do not include sleepwear.

You would be surprised. I am on the hiring committee at my local school district. We have folks coming in dressing like they are about to hit the club or about to hit the golf course. One lady had a smoking body, I am talking Halle Berry style. She had on a black mini dress with heels. I kid you not. She looked darn good, but she did not get the job. First impressions are really. Even though she made a good impression on me, “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. And like interviews, I think people should project a certain image for the classroom setting. I know I did.

Even though she made a good impression on me, and tht right there says ALOT about the individual. in the end people are going to wear what they want and deem appropriate. i remember going for an interview for where i work now and this lady came in with red pumps, a short blk skirt and a backless top..WTF i mean i think having workshops in college for this would definately be helpful, but idk...its a classroom it is not that serious, and if as a student you allow someone else (in any way) to distract your learning then that is on you. i myself am not a fan of the whole sagging trend, but idk its not that seruious and these people are paying their money to go there. now you can say don't go there if you dont like it, but what about the people that are already there? youre not going to leave midsemester over some bs such as this in addition theres a whole section about not allowing feminine attire both on campus or at schoolevents which i feel unfairly targets the small transgender population that may attend morehouse Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...
...And i'm gonna be groovy in it!

I don't find it appealing just like I "don't like" the saggy pants look. That's just my personal opinion, doesn't mean those who choose to dress like that or like either forms of that particular fashion will stop dressing like that just because I don't like it, [Edited 10/18/09 17:41pm] Education, the greatest weapon

A college is a business. A business has a right to protect it's image and standing in the community. If you're not doing the fucking, then you're taking one.

But I think some folks may be missing the point that educational institutions are for learning, not a place to express your religious/anti-religious opinions by way of your clothes or today's most popular fashions. In employment, most employers expect their employees to dress in a professional manner, as well as, following a code of ethics, because employees reflect that employer's business. So dress codes, in my opinion, pretty much prepare/teach young people/adults about respecting an institution's policy, and what it represent. Just my two cents. Exactly. And while the goth kids may come across looking like weirdos, the sagging ass jeans is immitating the look of the gangbangers which are criminals, the shit hoppers (many of which are criminals), and just an overall glorification of criminals and disrespect altogher. Some act out their criminal look and some are just as nice, polite, and pleasant as they can be but you would never know that unless you got to know them because they look like a damn criminal. Who is going to take a chance on finding out if someone that looks like a criminal really is one? Nobody with good sense would because they might find their ass either robbed or dead. As for the goths, a weirdo never hurt anyone but a criminal does. And there are far less goths than there are these saggy ass jean wearers. Plus, if banning them in the college helps to put another nail (or even a thumbtack) in the hopefully future coffin of shit hop, that's just an extra little goodie. Andy has spoken dammitt.

you missed the most important part of this new policy.
t is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

You do know that you have a lot of white, hispanic and asian youth wear those saggy jeans don't you? You do know that back in the 20s-30s gangbangers wore suits right? You do know that you don't have to wear saggy ass jeans to be a criminal right? There's no dress code required in being a criminal. Just go to wall street and see many of the men/women, in their suits and ties who rip off many of their clients. (not speaking of all that work on wall street). Bernie Madoff wasn't wearing saggy pants or gothic wear when he stole millions from his clients. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like saggy jeans/pants for the reason it looks ridiculous to see a man with his pants under his ass cheeks. What's the significance of that, I mean it's not like he has a 700 pound penis that he has to carry. I don't care if you are black, white, hispanic or asian. As far as gothic, in my opinion, it just looks creepy to me, and that's just my opinion about that. Now I do prefer to see young men neatly dress. There's nothing wrong with fashion trends or casual wear, but the saggy pants trend was born out of guys in prison wearing their pants like that. During the days of gangsta rap, many rappers made that stupid ass sh*t popular, and the youth fell for it. I still see the saggy pants BS in NYC all the time, worn by white, black, hispanic, asians, etc. Education, the greatest weapon
