What's to stop a determined person from purchasing one from a bordering state and just driving it to their house? I know it's alot of trouble, but these things are expensive anyway--throwing another couple hundred bucks on top of it would probably be something folks would be willing to do.

That's one big drawback of current flat screens--they're not capable of true black so you get really really dark grey, which isn't the same visually. It shoudln't be necessary to have to ban specific things. If the Us can agree a proper carbon cap and trade scheme, then the price of carbon will be inlcuded (and added) to the end-user electricity price, hence naturally incetivising more energy efficient products. They can even put it on cars etc. to make them change color or display advertising.

I bought a small Samsung LED flat screen for my bedroom, because I heard Plasmas tend to have stuff burned permanently to the screen after so much use. It's only 720p, but I'm happy with it. But then I got a blu ray dvd player the other day and rented The Shining. My jaw dropped to the floor, I couldn't believe how sharp and clear the picture was.

In a world first, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has given his backing to the crackdown on sets more than 40 inches wide. These liquid crystal display and plasma high definition sets can use as much as three times the power of smaller cathode ray models. Experts say the ban will reduce the state More..'s rocketing electricity bill by £5billion over the next decade. This is the equivalent of about £20 a set per year. Environmentalists have applauded the move by the California Energy Commission, but manufacturers claim consumers will be hit in the pocket as they rush to switch sets. About a quarter of televisions currently available will have to be pulled from the shops, according to Doug Johnson of the Consumer Electronics Association. 'Voluntary efforts are succeeding without regulations,' he said. Televisions account for about 10 per cent of residential energy use in California, the state with the highest population in the U.S., driven largely by the surge in sales of large flat screens. The bigger the set, the more energy they use. A vote to confirm the proposal could come as soon as November 4. Sets with screens of up to 58 inches would have until the start of 2011 to comply with a minimum efficiency standard, with more stringent rules being introduced two years later. http://www.liveleak.com/v...1255645242 you know what they say, as Ca goes, the country goes....
