Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

I'm surprised to say the least. Give your reasons why Obama should or should not have been chosen for this honor.

President Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize
Fri Oct 9, 2009 5:18am EDT
OSLO (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his calls to reduce the world's stockpile of nuclear weapons and working for world peace.

The first African American to hold the country's highest office, Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January.

The prize worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.4 million) will be handed over in Oslo on December 10.

(Reporting by Oslo newsroom)

Not for his actions because he hasn't done that much (yet). But him being a candidate and becoming the president of the USA really made some changes in the whole world. And because the Nobel Peace Prize is no longer for actions I think it is cool that Obama won.

Have to say my first response is surprise. Seems terribly premature (although I realise he is not the first recipeint to receive it based on "work in progress").

"Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said."

So, in essence, it seems like a politically motivated decision: "We like his politcs, so we'll give him the prize" type attitude. It's almost as a reward to the American people merely for electing someone the rest of the world do not hate. I don't think that's how such honours should be allocated really.

Until today I wasn't aware that the Prize is no longer awarded just for actions. I was thinking maybe those of us who voted for him should have gotten it. lol Now that they have explained their reasons I get the message they are sending.

Do these new parameters water down the meaning of the prize itself?

When the chair of the committee announced the winner there were audible shocked gasps from the room.

You shouldn't award it for aspirations.

In my opinion: yes. It is kind of weird that the leader of a country that is still at war gets the Nobel Peace Prize. But that is a trend that is going on for several years now.

That's sort of what I was thinking when I asked if this decision will diminish the meaning of the Nobel Prize?

Obama is still quite popular in other countries even when he's catching hell in the US. Is that a factor?

I have mixed feelings. I go from being very proud to thinking it's a bit premature.

If they gave a Nobel Prize for Understatement, you'd be a strong contender. nod

No surprises from this conservative.

I mean Al Gore actually received recognition for his propogandist bull crap, so why should the President, who has done nothing, not receive recognition....

I don't think the Nobel Prize has enough viability (in my eyes anyway) to get too worked over this; positive or negative.

Good thing he promised to escalate the Afghanistan war in the campaign and will approve thousands of more troops two months after requested, letting innocents and troops to die without support.

And the thing is that even though we know Obama inherited these wars, he hasn't yet put forward a plan to wind down the hostilities in Afghanistan...should that have disqualified him?

Way way too early.
Obama's accomplishments so far are all about hopes and symbols. We need something a little more tangible than that from a president - and Noble Peace prize winner.
It turns the Nobel Prize into a farce.

He deserves it just for the change in the international diplomatic climate. It couldn't be more stark a comparison w/ the Bush regime. I take this award to be as much a repudiation of Bush as it is a recognition of Obama's efforts to restore America's standing in the world.
