Ear Marks - 2,200 in the new Budget

We have a new 33.5 Billion in spending hitting our pockets from the congress...2,200 earmarks in that bill (i.e. things they could not get passed on their own merits)....

For those who believed the president and his promise to be responsible with OUR money.....think again. Of the 2,200 earmarks, around 1,200 have his name attached....a sample of some of those.....

No, he was too busy celebrating Mission Accomplished in Iraq.

Well then the RULE of NO Earmarks did not apply to Bush. Obama applied that rule to himself and now seems to be willing to break it.

Lets look back at "Read my lips, no new taxes." I am sure Democrats called H W Bush on that broken promise but were not likewise critical of Carter for his tax policy?

i'm trying to be civil and give the benefit of the doubt, but after reading his or her comment that obama promised no tax increases, as well as this and other posts, it's becoming harder and harder to think this person is aware of american politics.

"Mr. Bush has often derided Congressional earmarks as “special interest items” that waste taxpayer money and undermine trust in government. Congress, he said, included more than 11,700 earmarks totaling almost $17 billion in spending bills for the current fiscal year."

Earmarks are a small part of any bill. Compared to spending on Social Security or Medicare this is chump change. Conservatives use this as a boondoggle.

The question was if G W Bush had said he would ban earmarks, not if he was generally against them or not. President Obama on the other hand said in fairly direct terms that he would not allow any earmarks. That he would set a "new standard." So when he signs a bill or budget into law with earmarks, he is not following his new rule he set for himself, and is thus deserving of criticism.

Now to the "no tax increase." Obama did, on at least two occasions, say he would not raise any tax of any kind on any family making less than $250K (granted I left off the $250K figure on the post to which you are referring). Some want to change his words to mean he only meant "income based" taxes, however, that is not what Obama said.

It is really the supporters of the President that should be vocal. It was Obama that said he would set a new standard and ban earmarks. Which giving him full credit and a little charity I would say he meant in bills other than Budgets or bills to fund some project.(project being anything that the government might spend money on.)

Now if the argument is that those items are or are not ear marks, then that is a different issue all together. I would say an ear mark is any unrelated amendment added to a bill (other than budgets or funding bills) that requires funding.

On a funding bill or budget, there will be specific items that are listed for which funds will be reserved (that is what a budget is). On a budget it is seems nearly imposable to separate the pork or inappropriate special interest spending from the appropriate.

On a funding bill it gets a bit easier to separate. As you can ask 'is this item directly or indirectly related to the functioning of the spending project.A project to build a freeway may require funds to build a fish hatchery because the freeway will be too close to an existing hatchery to allow it to remain operational. So at a glance $5Million to build or move a fish farm may seem like an ear mark but it is really part of the requirements under eminent Domain.

On most other bills it may be more clear. The problem is that is part of the political game. To get some to support a bill they ask for something for their constituents. So in a way, ear marks or pork or special interest help the process. They also waste money.

The question was if G W Bush had said he would ban earmarks, not if he was generally against them or not.

how can someone be pro-earmarks and want to ban them?
and can you show me when he said he was going to ban them?

President Obama on the other hand said in fairly direct terms that he would not allow any earmarks. That he would set a "new standard." So when he signs a bill or budget into law with earmarks, he is not following his new rule he set for himself, and is thus deserving of criticism.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...e1I0O5l85E

yeah... so i watched the video and the edit and numerous repeats of "ban all earmarks" that cuts him off mid-sentence immediatly set off red flags so i googled it. guess what the first thing that came up was?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/P....stimulus/

Obama will ban earmarks from stimulus bill

like i said to one of your far-right brethren a few days ago when he was duped into believing some far-right propoganda:

reasearch: it isn't just for smart people anymore.

Now to the "no tax increase." Obama did, on at least two occasions, say he would not raise any tax of any kind on any family making less than $250K (granted I left off the $250K figure on the post to which you are referring). Some want to change his words to mean he only meant "income based" taxes, however, that is not what Obama said.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...8erePM8V5U

http://www.youtube.com/wa...kuqYvkMGoc

again, the tiniest bit of research reveals...

"I expect obama to keep his word and not raise ANY taxes. (oh yeah too late) "

Obama said "We are going to ban all earmarks" I took that as referring to all spending bills or budgets. As in the next paragraph he said:

"We're going to have to bring significant reform not just to our recovery and reinvestment plan, but to the overall budget process, to address both the deficit of dollars and the deficit of trust."

http://www.nytimes.com/20...obama.html

I would say that it was only the writers of the articles that strictly limited the ban to the stimulus plan.

and if you had quoted the second half of that paragrpah, it would show that wasn't speaking of banning earmarks on the whole at all:

"We're going to have to eliminate outmoded programs and make the ones that we do need work better."

Why is it that a criticism of this PRESIDENT is all of a sudden BAD? I thought it was okay to disagree and debate with any administration?

I don't think she's saying it's bad to criticize the president.
I think she's saying the methods and propaganda with witch they use is 'stooping'.

Disagreeing and debate are just fine. When is your side going to start that?

I ask because all I've witnessed coming from the right since January is not in any way shape form or fashion disagreeing and debate. What I've witnessed is flat out lies, distortions, fear mongering, contempt, disregard, jealousy, propaganda and partisan based rhetoric, that even stooped to the reprehensible cheering of the fact that the Olympic committee picked another country to host the 2016 Olympics and it's billions in possible revenue and thousands of jobs, just because this President went and tried to push for Chicago, when the last President pushed for the exact same thing. Your hypocrisy is staggering!

That argument is about as weak as your party is irrelevant and can't stand it.

Most things said about Bush were true and there is factual evidence that backs that up. Besides, if we were going to play tit-for-tat, don't you think we'd have made damn certain Bush was impeached. I mean honestly, we had far more to impeach him on than the right had on Clinton.

So what's going on today has nothing to do with politics as usual and you cowards are too afraid to admit it. So you try to hid behind that weak ass argument but the MAJORITY of people in this country are not blind and we're definitely not stupid!

It is the same argument you used. And I ask you what lies have been told about Obama? If you believe something no matter how crazy it is doesn’t make you a liar.

Maybe it is all a matter of perspective? If you believe something then you will accept anything that supports it as proof.

I believe that Obama was implying that he would ban all earmarks. He has not.
I believe that Obama meant it when he said families making less that $250K will not have ANY of their taxes increased. Yet he raised taxes on families making less that $250K.

The Politics of Spite

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: October 4, 2009

...Anyone surprised by the venomous, over-the-top opposition to Mr. Obama must have forgotten the Clinton years. Remember when Rush Limbaugh suggested that Hillary Clinton was a party to murder? When Newt Gingrich shut down the federal government in an attempt to bully Bill Clinton into accepting those Medicare cuts? And let’s not even talk about the impeachment saga.

The only difference now is that the G.O.P. is in a weaker position, having lost control not just of Congress but, to a large extent, of the terms of debate. The public no longer buys conservative ideology the way it used to; the old attacks on Big Government and paeans to the magic of the marketplace have lost their resonance. Yet conservatives retain their belief that they, and only they, should govern.

The result has been a cynical, ends-justify-the-means approach. Hastening the day when the rightful governing party returns to power is all that matters, so the G.O.P. will seize any club at hand with which to beat the current administration.

It’s an ugly picture. But it’s the truth. And it’s a truth anyone trying to find solutions to America’s real problems has to understand.

Of course, I'm a Liberal! I'm an American, damn it!

This country was founded on the premise of Liberty and Justice for ALL...remember?
