Carter: Race plays role in Obama dislike

Source:

http://firstread.msnbc.ms...70242.aspx

I have to applaud former President Jimmy Carter for expressing his opinion about the recent behaviors from American citizens, politicians and many media personalities towards our current President. This was also discussed on Keith Olberman's show. He seems to feel that many racist attitudes and beliefs of the past have surfaced. The racist animosity towards President Obama, has been over the top lately, as well, as the increase in death threats against him, the mockery, the comparison to Hitler, citizens calling him a terrorist, and other degrading names. Let's not forget that during the campaign, when the behaviors and citizens publically stating they would never vote for a Black Man to be President of this country. Statements like that was just a signal to the beginning of related attitudes and behaviors that would surface, once Obama was elected President.

Mr. Carter has lived in the south during the days of segregation and Jim Crow, so he has seen and experienced what it was like for African-Americans growing up in the south, dealing with the racist attitudes, and the laws that were created intentionally, at that time, to bar or limit African-Americans from specific civil rights, afforded to Whites.

With that remark coming from former President Jimmy Carter. do you agree with him? Do you see this as just yelling or screaming "racism" or "playing the sympathy or victim card" for President Obama? In my opinion, and others, Mr. Carter, is basically expressing his "open and honest opinion" about race in this country, because he recognizes the same, ugly racist attitudes/behaviors, he witnessed and experienced growing up in the south, but now sees it surfacing nationwide, towards President Obama.

I'm sure Mr. Carter will catch a lot of flack for expressing his honest opinion about a situation that many fail to admit is "real." in this nation, and will accuse him of "playing the race card," because there will be those that may not agree with President Carter's statement, yet at the same time, deep in their hearts they know President Carter is telling the truth, but will find ways to deny it. What's your take on Mr. Carter's comment?

Here's some of what former President Jimmy Carter said:

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."

Carter continued, "And that racism inclination still exists...
"

take a look at the signs at this recent gathering of 20,000 people in DC and you have proof racism is cloaked in opposition. Bush ruined this cuntry and these people were nowhere in sight. Suddenly they care? Nope, racists. And for anybody that laments the fact they are viewed as racists for real opposition, you only have your leaders and yourselves to blame. You've allowed these people to be the face of your party so don't go crying if people assiociate you with them.

Now that someone with some form of authority has pulled the 1 inch mat off of the 1000 lb elephant in the room. Will this country finally begin to have a dialog on what really is going on or are we going to keep dancing around it, pretending it's not there?

I think it is sad that a former President had to come to the forefront and publically express that this nation, is still displaying the same racist attitudes of the past. This country is quick to point fingers at the wrongs of other nations and how they treat their citizens, but when the finger turns in the other direction, many Americans can't handled being told this country is still racist. Hearing former President Jimmy Carter say it, has put the stamp on what many of us have been saying about this country for the past 3 years, while others denied it existed to no end. All I can say is, "Thank you former President Jimmy Carter for putting the confirming that racism still exists in America." clapping

Sad, because the behavior being portrayed by many of these Americans, obviously will be documented, and will be shown down the road in many documentaries, or printed in history books. Some of those teabagging images, reminds me of the horrible way people acted during the civil rights fight era. Shame, shame, shame.

I'm not surprised that President Jimmy Carter is telling it like it is. I was in elementary for most of his four years and was in the eighth grade when he lost to Ronald Reagan so I was very young and didn't know much about how he ran the country or how well he was at his job. But the main thing I remember for those four years, was how he was known here in Mississippi as the "nigger lover". Whites used to openly badmouth him and didn't hold their tongue either. He was absolutely hated down here and a lot of the racist images and cartoons about Obama that are showing up on the internet and racist comments being exposed in government emails and conservative websites, this was all going on down here about Jimmy Carter in flyers. The Ku Klux Klan used to pass out literature all the time at the traffic lights (which my racist father used to pick up) and Jimmy Carter was the main object of their racist cartoons and articles. If the internet had existed back then, y'all think these comments about Obama are something, that's nothing compared to what they would have been saying about Jimmy Carter if the internet had existed because back then, racists were much more out in the open. Remember, segregation had only ended ten years earlier.

My grandparents (on my mother's side of course) absolutely loved Jimmy Carter. He's always been my favorite president. As I said before, I don't know how well he may have been at his job as president since I was too young, but I have seen documentaries on his humanitarian work since he left the presidency. The man truly cares about people, and not just the ones that share his race.

Wow, thanks vainandy for sharing. I remember President Jimmy Carter being called a "n....r lover" from folks in the north as well. Americans said that about President Clinton also. I remember when Rush Limbaugh came out with his own tv show, mocking and insulting President Clinton. I also agree, that President Jimmy Carter is a humanitarian and so is his wife. It's sad that folks like Jimmy and his wife were/are looked upon in a negative way, as you mentioned in your post, like some folks views in the south about them. I'm sure Carter will catch a lot of heat and hate because of what he expressed today. It seems if you mention "racism in America" you get attacked for exposing it for exactly what it is, because there are so many folks that just can't face the reality of it, and would rather deny its existence.

I applaud Mr. Carter for his humanitarian work over the years and for publically stating his feelings on the racist attitudes of this country. You just don't get to possess humanitarian qualities, if it isn't already part of your character.

Agree 100%, and that is exactly how they will be portrayed.
When i look at those images from the past i often wonder how they could get away with it and why more people didn't stand up.

Not that I needed President Carter to validate what I already knew, but I thank him for speaking out because this is nothing to be coy about. The people who are deliberately inciting this behavior as well as those who turn a blind eye to it are setting the tone for an escalation of hate in this country.

If there were only black leaders speaking, they would most likely be told to get over it yet again, I'm encouraged when non blacks join us to condemn the hatred. Just like during the civil rights movement, people of all races will have to stand together against this new neo racist movement in disguise.

Because they may be afraid of the racists who commit these acts. They're afraid the racists will turn against them, bully them to "conform" to their way of thinking. Some may be called n****r lovers by their friends, relatives, etc., like vainandy mentioned happened in the south, during President Jimmy Carter's reign as President.

The point is, a racist, will do anything and everything to make those who stand up against racism, look like the bad guys, if racism in this country is exposed for what it is.

One thing racists can't handle is"the ugly, detailed truths" of racism. To those who stand up to it, and aren't afraid to expose it, and face the consequences, now those are "Champions" just like President Jimmy Carter. I applaud him for not being afraid to tell the truth. It's about time, a major public figure "publically" admits, that there is ongoing racism in this country.

Which is why I asked my question. I know good and damn well it is not only us that clearly see what the hell is going on. I also know that not all white people suckle at the tits of the likes of Glenn Beck and Boss Hogg Limbaugh.

However, with the media deregulated to the ownership of all media, television, radio and print to just the very wealthy and chosen few who also happen to be Neocons, it's hard as hell to tell that now-a-days. It was the same climate during the sabre rattling in the lead up to the war. You cannot tell me that the media and people in positions of leadership didn't know the thuth, they just chose to go along to get along because of fear. There was no Air America or MSNBC till years after the war started. People cowered in fear because of all the bullying and hoped it would go away without them having to do or say anything.

Most people are hesitant to stick their necks out over wrongdoing that doesn't affect them directly. Carter has shown himself to be consistently courageous and wise.

A lot of the criticisms toward Obama are definitely racially motivated.

Threats on the President have risen 300%. Do you think that would happen if Obama wasn't Black?

Do you think Republicans would be passing around emails showing this if Obama wasn't Black?

Do you think people at these Teabag Parties would be shouting that they want to "Take their country back" if Obama wasn't Black?

Of course Race plays a factor in the blatant disrespect of this President.

I have never seen a President being disrespected the way this President is.

If any Television Personality dared question say anything remotely upsetting about President Bush, their careers were over.

Look what happened to Bill Maher's show on ABC. Look what happen to the Dixie Chicks.

Protesters were called "loony" and "radical" by people like Sean Hannity and Michelle Bachman. Now, they're calling people bringing assault rifles to Presidential Events "Patriots".

You can accuse people of "Playing the Race Card". You know what? You play the cards you're dealt.

I don't think anyone viewing these events with a neutral outlook has ever doubted that race is a factor is why some poeople protest against Obama. But I also think its important to recognise that just because racists are against Obama, doesn't mean being against Obama makes you racist.

Policy arguments/disagreements etc should be taken at face value and argued as such. Simply calling someone a racist if they introduce a point of criticism or objection to the president is not going to help either good discussion or indeed to route out the actual racists. I'm sure most people do not in fact do this, but I've certainly observed it happen many times on here.

I agree with the majority of your post. It's disgusting the way many of these Americans behave. The racist mockery of our President says a lot about this country. Now if something actually happens to Obama, those media personalities that basically promoted the hatred against him, will be part of the blame. I mean when you have folks publically wishing failure and death upon him because of who he is, that's when it gets pretty sick and twisted.
