Exactly, and it's not exactly a flattering drawing either.

I'm not ready to call this racist, though I do think it's a bit tacky. Any art department must've known the historical precedent for this image.

lol

It was a dumb dumb dumb marketing move.
Is this an American company? Do we know?
Cuz whether or not it's on purpose, it's just not smart. There are some things you don't put together due to our history and how they will be perceived.
If I owned a store I wouldn't even keep the Ebony magazines near the produce dept.

I don't know, it kind of reminds me of Jip en Janneke (an old Dutch children's book series)

I guess I was wondering if being a non-American company and maybe not being as familiar with our advertising/racism history might add to the possibility of it being more a mis-step than racism.

I don't see it as being racist, tbh.

Just a lame drawing on either side. The white girl is snow white too but people aren't really screaming about that...

I think many people in the US due to the very sensitive nature have a right to take issue with it but both of the images are quite shit.

The company should probably have thought out their marketing campaign more. I doubt they deliberately were trying to be racist though.

Some people could take offence but racist? No, not imo.

It's that old school darkie drawing that makes it racist, not just the fact that it's watermelon soda.
But hey, what ISN"T racist in the U.S? As great a country as it is NOW, it began with the killing of Native Americans and the enslavement of Africans. The country could not have expanded OR been built without those two events. When that is your foundation racism will ALWAYS be an issue. We've got a President of African decent and people have lost their fucking minds sreaming "I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!" and bringing guns to town hall meetings. WTF? I know people are tired of hearing about race but it is what it is....
Sorry, I'll get off the soap box now.

I think every culture experiences racism if it's as simple as a character on a soda can. We enslave ourselves by making such a deal out of such petty things.....Every culture has things they are known for, things the like more then other cultures. I don't see the big deal with it. Everyone is different, be proud of the defining factors. I'm not offended that Italians are known for pizza, pasta etc. etc. Why should I be, these things are a part of my culture. We are the only ones that can make racism be gone. So I say POOF BE GONE!! It's not saying that's all we are good for, it's just saying that we like pizza for crying out loud!! And yes we do.....SO WHAT!!!

oh, big fuckin' deal

I see 2 poorly rendered kids on that can - one white, one black. Clearly the manufacturer wasn't walking on eggshells with that one. Personally I think it's good they didn't feel the need.

Maybe it's an unintentional step forward?

I'm sayin. Why don't people THINK??? lol

If the company's intent was not racist, then for sure someone at the damn TARGET shoulda been like hmm Umm...ah..Hold up... hmmm when that shipment arrived.
Or when it was about to leave the store room...or when it was getting stacked on the shelves...

this is stupid, shouting fire where is there is none. a white kid on one side, a black kid on the other...are we so sensitive and divided that black people can't like watermelon in public? seriously? or rather, are we supposed to pretend that black people don't eat watermelon?

i watched wendy williams' show and she was talking a bout two things she'll never do on tv...eat watermelon and eat fried chicken. i'm like, why? if white people can eat watermelon and fried chicken in public why can't black people.

i think to suggest we can't show blacks eating watermelon for fear of being racist is racist unto itself.

i have an issue that they showed the images, than the black girl but failed to point out the white boy.

i don't think it's racist but i wouldn't buy it cause it doesn't sound good.
