President Clinton meets Lil' Kim (US JOURNALISTS PARDONED) http://www.nytimes.com/20...ea.html?hp
Former President Bill Clinton met on Tuesday with Kim Jong-il, the reclusive and ailing leader of North Korea, while on a visit to negotiate the release of two imprisoned American television journalists, North Korean state media reported.
The high-level meeting, along with welcoming gestures from the regime, added to speculation among analysts in Seoul that North Korea, after months of raising tensions and hostile rhetoric towards Washington, may be ready to return to dialogue with Washington. That notion was reinforced by North Korea’s Central TV, which reported that Mr. Kim and Mr. Clinton “exchanged a broad range of opinions on issues of mutual interest.” Tensions have been high since a nuclear test by the North on May 25 and the subsequent American-led effort to impose international sanctions against the North. Administration officials sought to temper suggestions that Mr. Clinton would engage in sweeping discussions with Mr. Kim about North Korea’s nuclear program. His brief, one official said, was strictly limited to the imprisoned journalists. I don't think for a minute that this is strictly a private mission. But this is the part that really bummed me out: In December, 2000, the last days of his presidency, he came close to traveling to the country in hopes of striking a deal to contain North Korea’s missiles. Mr. Clinton ultimately decided not to go because the deal was not pre-cooked, and his advisers feared he would be appearing desperate for an end-of-presidency deal.
Now let's say he had gone and struck a deal. Would it matter that it was a "desperate end of presidency deal"? It sucks that a president has to worry about how opponents and the media will portray them when the possible outcome could have been a non-nuclear N. Korea. Bus Wankers! |

2:19 CST CNN is reporting the 2 journalists have been pardoned by N. Korea.
Update | 3:13 p.m. According to Reuters, North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, reports that Kim Jong-il, the country’s leader, has granted the two American journalists a “special pardon,” on Tuesday, which releases them from detention, following a meeting with former President Bill Clinton in Pyongyang on Tuesday. Reuters reports that KCNA issued the following statement:
Kim Jong-il issued an order of the chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission on granting a special pardon to the two American journalists who had been sentenced to hard labor in accordance with Article 103 of the Socialist Constitution and releasing them. Bus Wankers! |

It is a victory for these young ladies. I am pretty sure that president Obama doesn't care who gets the credit, just as long as these ladies are safe, returning home soon, and are in good hands. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. What I really like about all of this, thank God, Allah, JW, Ghost Busters, whoever you believe in, that this happened under president Obama's watch. If this happened under president Bush II.....OMG!!! “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Lee and Ling have just been released and pardoned. http://www.huffingtonpost...50682.html [Edited 8/4/09 12:53pm] The White House officials knew about it, but kept it quiet. President Obama obviously knew about Bill's mission to do this. It's obvious they had to keep things quiet for the safety of the two journalists. http://www.huffingtonpost...50682.html However, the decision to send the former president was kept quiet. A senior U.S. official told reporters traveling Tuesday with Hillary Rodham Clinton that the White House would not comment on the trip to Pyongyang until the mission was complete. "While this solely private mission to secure the release of two Americans is on the ground, we will have no comment," Gibbs, the White House spokesman, said later in a statement from Washington. "We do not want to jeopardize the success of former President Clinton's mission." [Edited 8/4/09 13:23pm] The patience and love I am blessed with, is the golden key for my strength and survival.

Jesse Ventura would agree with you. Like Jesse said, War should be THE very last resort if peace talks AND diplomacy fails. The one thing that neo-conservatives always get wrong is that they never try to talk to their enemies "face to face". Imagine how many things would be different if Bush Jr. knew how to talk to Kim, Saddam, or Osama "face to face". OK, Osama is pushing it! But you know what I mean. Symbolism is a hell of a weapon against humanity!

It's not as if he was acting as an independent agent and just up and decided to go on his own with unmarked state transportion, state security protection, and political entourage. He went as an envoy.
