(CBS) Last Updated 3:44 p.m. ET.

Sarah Palin has announced that she will resign as governor of Alaska and will not seek a second term.

CBS Affiliate KTVA reports that at a press conference this morning Palin said she will resign the governorship within a few weeks.

CBSNews.com producer Scott Conroy, who covered Palin's vice presidential campaign last year, confirmed through a source close to the governor said she is leaving office.

Earlier today, a holiday, Palin sent out an early morning press release indicating that she would be making an announcement from her home in Wasilla.

Joining Palin were her parents, family and state commissioners.

Palin said that power will be transferred to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in during the upcoming governor's picnic in Fairbanks.

She did not field questions, and would not give any indications about her future plans.

Palin reportedly stepping down as Alaska governor
July 3: Sarah Palin is reportedly stepping down as Alaska's governor. MSNBC's Alex Witt reports.

NBC News and news services
updated 16 minutes ago
WASILLA, Alaska - Sarah Palin announced Friday she plans to resign as governor of Alaska in a few weeks, saying she will try to "affect positive change" from outside government.

Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, made the announcement at a press conference Friday.

She said the decision has been "in the works" for a while and comes after "prayer and consideration."

She is handing the reins over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in on July 25. Parnell and most of Palin's cabinet were present at the announcement.

"We know we can affect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference," she said, adding that politics had become a "superficial, wasteful bloodsport."

Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office.

Palin was elected Alaska's youngest and first woman governor in 2006 at age 42. She was the surprise pick of Arizona Sen. John McCain as running mate in the 2008 presidential election.

She was only the second woman to appear on a major party presidential ticket — Democrat Geraldine Ferraro was the first when she ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Walter Mondale in 1984.

Well I think a senator bid would be better for her at this stage of the game, just to get more experience and recoup from the tv interviews. But I think she's going to run for the GOP nomination.

Hey, Obama was a Senator and ran for President.
The Senate could use her executive experience.

[I'm betting the Republicans campaign on "Putting the 'white' back in the White House."]

She said politics had become a superficial, wasteful bloodsport. Why would she run for anything again? The GOP turned on her after the presidential election.

Using her logic, any president or politician that faces term limits ought to resign as soon as they're elected to their last possible term. So obviously, she is not being honest about why she's a quitter.

I do not understand why honesty is so hard to come by with these Bush Republicans. It's like they had it genetically removed or something.

LOL, I'd like to think I called her out on her mothering skills, and she's going to return to private life and do better, but somewhow I don't think that's why she has become a quitter.

And by the way, that is EXACTLY what she is.

Sarah Palin is a QUITTER.

I wonder if she's going to give back all the donations she got during the last gubernatorial campaign that she hasn't spent yet?

What do you guys think?

I wonder if she's going to apologize to everyone in Alaska that truly believed she was the best candidate to lead the state, and voted for her under the belief she'd serve out her full term (vice presidency notwithstanding)?

What do you guys think?

I think she's a quitter.

What bullshit. I wonder what skeleton she's hiding with this resignation.

Nobody and I mean NOBODY has gave a damn about Sarah Palin being governor of Alaska. And, if she is successful at it, then she surely would have been re-elected.

That presser was NUTS. She was rambling even more than usual. And she looked pissed.

There's something HUGE coming. Just look at her past, there's a ton of scandals and she survived them all. But this upcoming thing must be incredible.

But this is something different. NOBODY knew about this resignation. This looks like she was just planning to announce not running for a second term (because of what was coming), and instead someone forced her to quit.

Man, have you ever seen someone fail at politics so spectacularly? From nobody to national joke to "please go away" to spectacular quitter in what? Eleven months?

Betcha Sanford is pleased.

The way she was speed talking and practically gasping for air between sentences, yeah, I think she's done. Whatever the truth is that made her resign must be GOOD!!! I almost want to know what it is but not as much as I want to forget I ever heard of her! lol
