Nine-year-old boy organises gay marriage rally

After overhearing that a same-sex couple in his neighbourhood couldn't get married, nine-year-old Ethan McNamee decided to organise a gay rights rally.

The third-grader, from Denver, got the idea after hearing anti-gay insults in the playground and learning that his friend's two mothers were not allowed to marry.

With a little help from his parents and teacher, Ethan and several friends worked to gain permits for the rally, find speakers and raise awareness of the event in the community.

On Saturday, more than 200 people turned up to show their support on the steps of Colorado’s state capitol.

Addressing the crowd, Ethan told supporters: "I believe I am doing the right thing. I hope this rally will make an impact and let our voices be heard."

Despite critics suggesting he was too young to have views on same-sex marriage, Ethan’s teacher at Montclair Elementary Kyle Kimmal told reporters he had been careful not to impose his own views on his class.

There's hope for the future, yet.

We are stardust. We are golden.

Feb. 12th -28th: Two weeks of corporate and nationalistic dick-stroking in the guise of a sporting event. I can not wait.

Have you honestly never heard of a child having opinions of their own before? Most kids aren't the idiots adults enjoy imagining them to be.

Yeah...from the sounds of it this kid came up with the rally on his own. Sure, he got help but this is not the same as some kid holding a sign their parents made for them and saying what what their parents told them to say. None of this would have happened if the kid did not want it to.

Possibly, but attitudes are changing slowly but surely. It's possible that there are other kids in his class who feel the same as him, so he'll have backup.

He is too young to have an opinion about same-sex marriage. And he wasn't careful enough not to impose his own views - he organized a rally on the steps of the state capitol.

At 9, kids have opinions about all sorts of political issues. And the location of the rally doesn't seem to be an imposition of opinion, so much as a pointer on where he'd best be heard. Anyway, who's to say that wasn't the kid's parents' idea?

I find it hard to believe this kid came up with this idea on his own, but if he did, more power to him. It's rare that you see kids standing up for what they believe.

A wild guess: kids' opinions on such issues are a direct product of adults' influence/brainwashing.
Just a guess...

In any case, the adults' little technical help here certainly worked wonders for catching the media/world's attention - coincidentally...

sorry, I was out living my life, away from the computer for a few days. You may want to try this yourself.

anyway, Flo6 summed up my opinion on this much better than I ever could. You feed a kid a bunch of whatever you want, and that's what you're going to get. Not ridiculous. And we're talking about a CHILD here. Children can also be brainwashed into organizing hitler youth rallies if that's what they're taught everyday. mad

Everyone -even adults, hell, ESPECIALLY adults -learn their opinions from ideas fed to them by those around them. That's how human beings learn, oddly enough.

Children are not the stupid little shits some adults seem to enjoy pretending they are. I've met more than a few kids in my day who has fully formed and intelligent opinions at 9 and even younger. I'm sorry to hear you have such a low opinion of young people. I hope you don't have any.

oh, shut the hell up. I do have young people. I hold their opinions in high regard, but am I about to let them organize a fucking rally about it? No, I'm going to tell them to go ride their bikes and enjoy the sunshine. Not follow some bullshit liberal agenda I've got set up for them.

In response to some of the comments: of course we, adults, are all influenced by what we consume [read, hear, learn, etc] and that accounts for much of the way our opinions are formed. We then form our own opinions based on this consumption. This would mean that by definition, the material we are dealing with is much more extensive than that of a child, for the simple reason of the age difference: we have been exposed to much more material than they have.

But what we consume is not the only thing adults form their opinions on. There is also personal direct real life experiences. In this case - marriage, couple relationships and gay/gender issues - it is safe to assume that a 9 year old has no personal direct experience of these things - and therefore, for this reason too, is less able to make an informed judgement than adults.

Just a few thoughts...
