Swearing Discussion Does anybody have any idea why the use of obscene language has become so widespread today?

I think profanity has always been widespread.

No, the Bible does not condemn profanity, at least not as we think of it. The Biblical edicts against cursing refer to taking the Lord's name in vain -phrases like Good God, Oh My God, Oh Lord, and others. All phrases thrown around pretty liberally be a lot of religious folk, including Ms. High n Mighty herself, Prince.

I value profanity because sometimes you have to underscore a statement with drama. I'm trying to cut down, however. It is crass. I wish I could take credit for this example, but someone else said it first. Wish I could remember who. Picture a big tree. Now, picture a fucking huge tree. Which tree was bigger? We are stardust. We are golden.

Words that we actually think of as swears -shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits (the classic 7!) -aren't, according to Biblical standards. In fact, it's linguistically and historically impossible that any genuine Bible has anything to say for good or bad about words like those because they all originate from Indo-European languages that didn't exist during the time the Bible is supposed to have been written. At worst, those words are a bit rude and best not said in front of Grandma or your boss. But they're not swears. OMG

As George Carlin said, Fuck is a word, matters what the context is.

I love swearing but hate that I do it so much 2009: Mermaids and Dolphins...

only time swearing bothers me is when someone uses it as every other word. it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

I never understood why the media was so obsessed with Blago cussing? "...I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love...with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night I will steal away into your home...and punch you in the face!"

Because it's tacky and people (rightly or wrongly) often expect more class from those in authority.

Also, resorting to profanity can often look like a certain lack of self-control which is also very unattractive in a person of authority. Or anyone, IMO . . . [Edited 2/2/09 15:47pm] Well you certainly earned your GD angel wings now didn't you?! 2009: Mermaids and Dolphins...

mdiver said: meow85 said: All at once? I don't think a word that makes so many people giggle as tits does should really be considered a swear, and maybe these days it isn't. But I know back when Carlin did his infamous piece it sure as hell was. I love tits. The real thang and the word. [Edited 2/3/09 21:55pm] We are stardust. We are golden.

I regret that comedians so often feel that they can't be funny without vulgar language. I LOVE stand-ups in general. But since hearing people curse and swear truly feel like someone slapping me mentally, I can't enjoy most of them. I've never had trouble getting or making a point without the use of profanity. Of course, to each his own -- but IMO the use of profanity shows a lack of respect for oneself and others; it lowers you. The whole reason people DON'T swear around their grandmother or boss is because it's rude; why be rude to anyone? It's not cute. To be honest, once someone starts swearing, they're losing me as a listener or supporter. I think it's important to honor others as much as possible. Or at least not go so far as to disrespect them. You are never incorrect for NOT swearing. BUT it could be reasonably argued IMO that a person is very, very incorrect for tuning out what someone else has to say based on their language. It just seems like it's a part of the English language.

Although swear words are used for different reasons I guess Like with anything, context and intent make all the difference. We are stardust. We are golden.
