Swearing Discussion

Does anybody have any idea why the use of obscene language has become so widespread today?
Is the use of such language really condemned in the Bible,as many say it is?
Is God going to punish mankind for its profanity?
More information is contained in the following articles:

I think profanity has always been widespread.

I value profanity because sometimes you have to underscore a statement with drama. cool

I'm trying to cut down, however. It is crass. mad

No, the Bible does not condemn profanity, at least not as we think of it. The Biblical edicts against cursing refer to taking the Lord's name in vain -phrases like Good God, Oh My God, Oh Lord, and others. All phrases thrown around pretty liberally be a lot of religious folk, including Ms. High n Mighty herself, Prince.

Words that we actually think of as swears -shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits (the classic 7!) -aren't, according to Biblical standards. In fact, it's linguistically and historically impossible that any genuine Bible has anything to say for good or bad about words like those because they all originate from Indo-European languages that didn't exist during the time the Bible is supposed to have been written.

At worst, those words are a bit rude and best not said in front of Grandma or your boss. But they're not swears.

I wish I could take credit for this example, but someone else said it first. Wish I could remember who.

only time swearing bothers me is when someone uses it as every other word.

it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

Of all the bad things I've done in life (and I've done plenty sad ), I am proud to say that I have never uttered a swear word -- even in the privacy of my home, slamming my finger in a drawer. mad I just never developed the habit; it feels crass.

I regret that comedians so often feel that they can't be funny without vulgar language. I LOVE stand-ups in general. But since hearing people curse and swear truly feel like someone slapping me mentally, I can't enjoy most of them.

I've never had trouble getting or making a point without the use of profanity. Of course, to each his own -- but IMO the use of profanity shows a lack of respect for oneself and others; it lowers you. The whole reason people DON'T swear around their grandmother or boss is because it's rude; why be rude to anyone? It's not cute. To be honest, once someone starts swearing, they're losing me as a listener or supporter. I think it's important to honor others as much as possible. Or at least not go so far as to disrespect them.

You are never incorrect for NOT swearing. shrug

Because it's tacky and people (rightly or wrongly) often expect more class from those in authority.

Also, resorting to profanity can often look like a certain lack of self-control which is also very unattractive in a person of authority. Or anyone, IMO . . . confused

I don't think a word that makes so many people giggle as tits does should really be considered a swear, and maybe these days it isn't. But I know back when Carlin did his infamous piece it sure as hell was. nod

I love tits. The real thang and the word.

BUT it could be reasonably argued IMO that a person is very, very incorrect for tuning out what someone else has to say based on their language.

It just seems like it's a part of the English language.

Although swear words are used for different reasons I guess smile
