Republican Didn't Know 'Uppity' Has Racial Overtones

September 5, 2008
Link

Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland was unaware a word he used to describe Barack and Michelle Obama on Thursday carries racial overtones, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN.

Westmoreland, who represents Georgia's third district, described the Obamas as "uppity" when asked by reporters in Washington to compare Repubican vice presidential canidate Sarah Palin with the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate.

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said, according to the Capitol Hill Newspaper the Hill.

Westmoreland's spokesman, Brian Robinson, insisted the congressman did not know the word has been used with a racially derogatory intent against African-Americans.

"When describing the Obamas as part of an elite class, Congressman Westmoreland also used a synonym for elitist: uppity. He was using the dictionary definition of the word, which is having 'an inflated self-esteem' or 'snobbish.' He stands by that characterization and thinks it accurately describes the Democratic nominee. He was unaware that the word had racial overtones and he had absolutely no intention of using a word that can be considered offensive," Robinson said.

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for Obama's campaign, would not comment to CNN, but told The Hill, " “Sounds like Rep. Westmoreland should be careful throwing stones from his candidate’s eight glass houses."

Robinson said it is important to note the Obama campaign did not note the racial overtones of the word in its response.

"Congressman Westmoreland and Senator Obama may not agree on much, but at least they can agree that Congressman Westmoreland was not referring to race," Robinson said.

McCain can't tell you how many houses his wife owns and Cindy McCain wears a $300,000 outfit to his convention and they are the regular folk. Obama just paid off his student loans, grew up with a single mother and was on food stamps and he's the elitist? Just wow.....

They have also been referring to him as "man child". Take a wild guess what that stands for.

Since when is "uppity" a synonym for "elite"? What kind of lying BS is that?

And you gotta hand it to the Republicans for having the sheer audacity to have a multimillionaire candidate who can't even remember how many houses he has and still they call his opponent "elite."

Naw, I have to say I've NEVER heard it used in reference to a house negro. That's new to me. Now it's a stretch to think that this Rep was actually going THERE but usually when I hear that term it just means "stuck up Black person". Now had he gone THERE...then ok, we have something. But I don't see it here.

damn. It's downright depressing when you actually think of how they pitted one slave against another. What was the house slave supposed to do? They were probably selected to be in the house for a reason and then the slave master then talks about them to the field slaves like the house slave had any say in the matter. Just sickening that the term is still used.

Exactly. Let me see if I could break it down the best way I can.

That term is used by those of a jealous spirit to call educated and articulate Black people "Uppity"..the term has also been referenced to educated African-Americans as "acting white". For example, a black family living in an upscale neighborhood or an all-white neighborhood.

i.e., Have you ever seen those old movies that take place in the south, and let's say a black person from the North comes in and the racist whites refer to him/her as an "Uppity" Negro because he/she is educated and "speaks well" and lives at a comfortable economic level. Well that is just a small example of calling a Black person "Uppity." The definition could go farther.

Westmoreland appears to think that Michelle and Barack Obama should act more like the stereotypes he's used to watching on his local news stations.

It has been used by those within the Black community most definitely. Take for example, my brother is living in a neighborhood called Brandywine in Delaware. Within 7 to 8 miles there are only 10 black families. Some Blacks living within a lower-economic area may see him as an "Uppity Black Person", but my brother has worked hard all his life and deserve to lives where and how he chooses. He has a charismatic personality and has always been able to get along with everyone, not just his own kind, and is proud of who he is. But yes, it is a term that is used within the black communities all over. When I say "Black community" I don't mean a neighborhood, I mean "Black people" as a population and in general.

It is also used in other cultures as well. I know for a fact it has been used in the Hispanic community as well, just through conversations I've had and heard, so "Uppity" is not limited in it's use within my community as a whole. I hope I explained it clearly, as it is only my own personal definition of it from my own experience. It can basically mean, "thinking you're better than everyone else" or "snobbish," whether it's inside or outside of your circle

I am a bit surprised that you haven't heard it used. Take the "Rosewood"(Florida) and "Tulsa, Oklahoma" situation (Black Wall Street.) Actual events.

You had Blacks in the 1920s living economically well in both places, doing for themselves within their own communities. You had entrepreneurs/business owners, their own schools. They had their own wealth.....until the poor whites who lived across town. and did not have the wealth these Black people had, were jealous and furious that Black people, whose ancestors were slaves, were living better than them. How on earth can that happen?? Was what they thought.

These poor whites felt because these people were "Black" they did not deserve to live better than whites. That is because for years many poor whites have been brainwashed by their own that they were "better or superior" to non-whites. They saw Black people as inferior. So they ran the Black people out of both of these places, burnt down their property, stole their land/deeds. It's all in American History, and all this was less than 99 years ago. The poor whites did not like "Uppity Negroes" or Black people in general living better than them. That is basically where I think the term "uppity negro/blacks" originated and spilled into the black community and others, as far as I could tell. Then let's not forget that today we still have some black people with that "slave mentality" that think educated black people and Black people that live on high economic levels are "Uppity." I especially hear that term used from American born Black people from the (north/south) about Jamaicans or other people from the Caribbean, who come to the states and buy property/houses/businesses, etc. But sometimes the American blacks are correct, because some of their attitudes are a bit "uppity" unfortunately, once they come here and "make it"..so to speak. (Yes I know my family is Caribbean, but they are not like that)

Basically I think every racial group uses the term. But like I said, Westmoreland, in my opinion, used as though he thinks Michelle and Barack Obama do not have the right to live at the economic or educational level they are on. What?? A Black Man graduating from Harvard and his wife educated too?? Then a Black Man having the "audacity" (no pun intended) to run for the President of the United States??? Is he crazy??.....that's the level Westmoreland seems to be thinking on... lol
